Revolut has joined the European Payments Initiative to bring its Wero Wallet to millions of new customers this summer.

Launched late last year to harness the potential of account-to-account (A2A) payments to help European banks take on the might of Visa and Mastercard, Wero has already enrolled 40 million users across the first wave of markets it has entered.
It enables A2A transfers using Sepa Instant Credit Transfer protocols so users can send money within 10 seconds via phone numbers, email addresses, or QR codes.
Revolut's customers, initially in France, Belgium, and Germany, will have access to Wero's core features directly within their Revolut app. This includes instant, free-of-charge P2P money transfers between Wero users.
Looking ahead, Revolut will integrate additional use cases as they come onstream. This includes e-commerce payments in the second half of 2025, followed by in-store payments, subscription management, and loyalty services from 2026 onward..
"Facilitating seamless access to free and instant payments is no longer a nice to have, it's a must," says David Tirado, VP of global business at Revolut. "By enabling Wero within the Revolut app, alongside our other local peer-to-peer payment partners, we're empowering our customers to make instant and secure payments seamlessly within European borders, in the most suitable way for them."

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke to step down, plans new startup

Aug 11 (Reuters) - GitHub Chief Executive Thomas Dohmke said on Monday he will leave the Microsoft-owned (MSFT.O), opens new tab code-hosting platform to launch a new startup, capping a tenure that included a major push into artificial intelligence through the company's Copilot products. Dohmke, who moved to the U.S. from Germany more than a decade ago after selling his startup to Microsoft, said his "startup roots" prompted the decision. "I've decided to leave GitHub to become a founder again," he said in a blog post, but did not provide details about the new venture. Before becoming CEO, Dohmke helped lead mobile developer tools at Microsoft and worked on GitHub's acquisition alongside former CEO Nat Friedman. Microsoft acquired GitHub in a $7.5 billion all-stock deal in 2018. More than 150 million developers use GitHub's tools to build, maintain and collaborate on software projects, according to the company's website. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Dohmke's successor. His transition period concludes at the end of the year. Dohmke said that under his leadership, GitHub expanded globally, earned U.S. FedRAMP certification for federal use and doubled AI projects on the platform. Axios, which first reported the news, said Microsoft developer division head Julia Liuson will oversee GitHub's revenue, engineering and support. GitHub's chief product officer, Mario Rodriguez, will report to head of product for Microsoft's AI platform Asha Sharma, according to the report.

Truth Social host Rumble weighs near $1.2 billion deal for Northern Data

Aug 11 (Reuters) - Video platform Rumble (RUM.O), opens new tab, which hosts U.S. President Donald Trump's Truth Social, is weighing boosting its global AI cloud capabilities by acquiring Germany's Northern Data ( opens new tab, the companies said. Rumble said it was considering making an offer for the company which would give it control of Northern Data's cloud business, Taiga, and its large-scale data center arm, Ardent, with plans to integrate both into its own operations. The Taiga cloud unit holds a significant inventory of Nvidia graphics processing unit (GPU) chips, including around 20,480 H100s and over 2,000 H200s, Rumble said. "Following consummation of the potential transaction, Tether would become an important customer of Rumble, with a multi-year commitment to purchase GPUs," Rumble said. Under a potential exchange offer, Tether is expected to be Rumble's largest single holder of its class A common stock and the majority of voting rights would continue to lie with Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski, Rumble said. Tether currently owns 48% of Rumble, according to LSEG data. It invested $775 million in the video platform in December last year. Tether holds 54% of Northern Data, according to Rumble. Rumble is considering offering 2.319 shares for each Northern Data share, both companies said. The proposed offer values Northern Data at about $18.3 per share, based on Reuters calculations, and represents a discount of about 32% to the German company's last closing price in Frankfurt. Reuters calculated the potential total deal value at approximately $1.17 billion. A deal on the current terms would result in Northern Data shareholders owning about 33.3% of Rumble's shares. The offer launch would be subject to due diligence, among other things. Northern Data said on Monday that its board was evaluating Rumble's potential offer and is open for further discussions. Tether has expressed support for the transaction, according to the statements. However, the companies said there was no certainty that the discussions would ultimately result in a formal offer for the German group. Tether had no immediate comment. Rumble went public in December 2021 via a SPAC deal. Earlier that year it said its investors included tech billionaire Peter Thiel and Narya, an investment firm co-founded by JD Vance, now U.S. vice president. The proposed deal would also involve Northern Data selling its crypto mining business, Peak Mining, and using the proceeds to repay part of an existing loan from Tether to Northern Data, Rumble said. Tether loaned, opens new tab Northern Data 575 million euros almost two years ago to expand its own business. Tether is the world's largest stablecoin company. Based in El Salvador, it says it has issued more than $160 billion of its dollar-pegged cryptocurrency.

Mercedes CEO Says We Need A Reality Check Over Combustion Bans

The Mazda CX-5 has always been the crossover for people who actually like driving. Does the 2025 model still live up to this expectation? Mercedes Is Concerned About Combustion Restrictions Mercedes, like most other automakers, had once committed to going all-electric by the end of this decade, but weak demand for EVs has forced the company to rethink those targets. Now, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said that even Europe's planned 2035 combustion ban is too ambitious, reports Reuters. 'We need a reality check. Otherwise, we are heading at full speed against a wall,' the CEO told German newspaper Handelsblatt, adding that Europe's car market could 'collapse' if the ban is approved after its review later this year. 2025 Audi S3 vs Mercedes-AMG CLA 35: the executive decision Watch More Käallenius Wants A Different Approach Source: Mercedes This comes after Mercedes-AMG revealed plans to develop a new V8 engine that has no defined 'natural end date,' citing customer demand for more combustion-powered products. Regular, non-AMG Mercedes products will also have a gas option for a long time to come. 'Of course, we have to decarbonize, but it has to be done in a technology-neutral way,' Källenius said. 'We must not lose sight of our economy.' This mirrors earlier comments made by the CEO, after he said in June that he believes 'the most rational approach in the current situation is for an established manufacturer to do both [EV and gas] and not neglect one technology.' Porsche has also walked back plans for going all-electric, thanks to weak demand, and like Mercedes, it sees a varied product offering as key to sustained sales. Essentially, Mercedes and other automakers in Europe are happy to continue developing EVs for those who want them, but they believe that while a ban on combustion cars would lead to a sharp rise in sales just before gas cars are outlawed, disaster would soon follow as consumers look to other brands. View post: Mercedes-Benz Confirms EV Pricing Cut Ahead News Mercedes-Benz Confirms EV Pricing Cut Ahead Price drops of up to $15,000 indicate the EQ line might have a pricing problem. Steven Paul Lots To Come From Mercedes Earlier this month, Källenius revealed that Mercedes-Benz intends to launch an onslaught of 18 new vehicles by 2027, with half of them being all-electric and the other half featuring combustion engines of various descriptions. The CEO says this will be 'probably the most intense amount of launches in a three-year period in the history of [Mercedes].' These vehicles will be ready to live until 2035, but it's clear that the company wants to sell them long after that. With the Trump administration reversing the vast majority of CAFE standards fines and nixing tailpipe emissions rules, Mercedes now hopes that a similarly tolerant view of gas power will take hold in Europe, and given the influx of remarkably good yet well priced EVs from China on the Old Continent, it's quite possible that local lawmakers will change their tune on the combustion ban to sustain the European auto industry.
