
DGT and Shell India jointly launch Green Skills-focused EV training program to empower youth
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): The Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), in collaboration with Shell India, launched a Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV) training program aimed at equipping students and faculty with future-ready capabilities in green energy and e-mobility.
This initiative will be implemented by Edunet Foundation, training partner of Shell, across select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka on 12th June 2025, according to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
Under the DGT-Shell India collaboration, green skill training will be delivered through a structured multi-tier model across select NSTIs and ITIs. In the first phase, the program includes a 240-hour advanced EV Technician course at 4 NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs equipped with Shell-supported labs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module at additional ITIs without physical labs.
The curriculum, jointly developed by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols. The initiative also includes Training of Trainers (ToT) for over 250 instructors, certification co-branded by Shell and DGT, and structured placement support to enhance industry readiness.
A key highlight of the initiative is the establishment of specialised EV skill labs within select ITIs and NSTIs. These labs are designed to offer hands-on training and expert-led sessions aligned with industry standards. Beyond lab-based learning, the program also provides placement support and co-branded certifications to successful participants, enhancing their employability in the green energy and EV sectors.
The Government of India has been actively advancing Green Energy and Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption in line with its net-zero ambitions. Flagship initiatives like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme have played a pivotal role in accelerating EV uptake, enhancing infrastructure, and offering targeted incentives.
Complementing these national efforts, states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have introduced their own EV policies to fast-track the transition to electric mobility, foster local ecosystems, and generate green jobs. These developments underscore the growing demand for a skilled workforce in the green energy and EV sectors.
As the apex national body for vocational training, DGT will play a crucial role in this initiative by mobilizing students and trainers and supporting the institutional ecosystem to ensure alignment with national education and skill development standards.
Speaking on the importance of this initiative, Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE and Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary said, 'Our collaboration with Shell India reflects the government's deeper commitment to aligning skilling with sustainability. India may ease EV localisation norms amid China's rare earth export curbs
India is considering a relaxation of its stringent 50per cent localisation requirement for electric vehicle (EV) makers and suppliers in light of China's recent curbs on rare earth exports, according to people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. While the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has not yet submitted a formal request to lower the threshold, industry representatives have raised the issue during consultations with the government, the sources said, requesting anonymity due to the private nature of the discussions. China, the dominant global supplier of rare earth minerals, imposed restrictions in April on the export of these critical materials, which are used in the production of permanent magnets essential for EV traction motors. The move has disrupted supply chains and posed a challenge to India's localisation goals under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Indian auto industry's urge In response, the government has advised automakers to temporarily import fully-built traction motors or their sub-assemblies to circumvent supply bottlenecks, sources added. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has not yet commented publicly on the issue. Suppliers and manufacturers are reportedly scrambling to secure alternative sources and are working on expensive workarounds to continue production. However, a prolonged disruption in the availability of rare earth materials could severely impact the ability of automakers to meet the localisation mandates tied to the PLI scheme, which offers financial incentives to promote domestic manufacturing. The PLI program is part of a broader government effort to reduce reliance on imports across key sectors, including electronics, textiles, semiconductors, and EVs. Despite the push for self-reliance, China's control over the rare earth supply chain leaves Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with limited options. According to the people familiar with the matter, some automakers are already exploring the possibility of importing fully assembled motors or critical sub-assemblies directly from China to ensure production continuity. India's potential move to soften localisation norms could provide short-term relief to EV manufacturers, though it also underscores the country's dependency on critical materials from China and the urgent need to develop resilient, localised supply chains.

Peerless forays into real estate with green building project
Kolkata: Peerless General Finance and Investment Co Ltd (PGFI) has finally ventured into the real estate segment through a green building in New Town Action Area I. The construction of the mixed-use realty project, Trayam, which will include residential and commercial projects, started this March and is likely to be ready by 2029, said Jayanta Roy, MD of the business conglomerate. At the presser, Roy said they were planning to start work on another real estate project in the city this year. The group had announced at its AGM last year its plans to enter the real estate segment. "Our RERA registration was completed last month and 60% of bookings are in process. The total project cost is Rs 500 crore and a portion of the funding may be through a bank loan. This project is IGBC gold pre-certified as it will have EV charging bays, a compactor, water harvesting and solar panels," Roy said. Coming up on 2.6 acres of land, the project will have two residential towers, which will include a total of 71 luxury units. "The commercial side of the project will include a mall and office spaces. We will lease out the commercial spaces," he said. Supriyo Sinha, executive director, business transformation and corporate strategy of the group, said the project had been master-planned by Singapore-based architects. "We have conducted extensive buyer research to understand the aspirations of homebuyers in Kolkata, and our maiden venture aims at bringing residence, retail and office under the same realty roof," Sinha said.
