Wrexham man's Land's End to John O'Groats charity trek

Leader Live01-05-2025
Stuart Jones will be travelling on a small 125cc motorbike, towing a trailer from Land's End in Cornwall to John O'Groats in Caithness, Scotland.
Due to the specially adapted trailer, the 70-year-old will be unable to use motorways, so is having to take a much less direct route.
He hopes the 1,200-mile ride, in aid on Nightingale House Hospice and Blood Bikes Wales (who he has previously ridden for), will take between a week and 10 days.

Stuart aims for cover 150-200 miles a day, and en route he will sleep under a tarp sheet attached to the side of the bike, with a Welsh flag.
He said: "It's all a big zigzaggy, and have no real set time, so will just have to see how it goes.
"The plan was originally for me to do it both ways, starting from Wrexham but members of the family weren't too keen.

"But now two of the lads from Blood Bikes are taking me in a van to Land's End, and picking me up from John O'Groats.
"It's a long way for them to come and they're very good offering to help."
Not one for taking it easy, he added: "I'm fairly fit for my age but you've just got to keep going while you can."
Stuart, who has already secured sponsorship ahead of the trek, will also be collection donations during his travels, with 100% going to the two causes.

Setting off for his solo ride on May 8, he hopes to be completed by his birthday on May 24.
Lifelong friend Mark Richards added: "Stuart has a heart bigger than anyone I've ever met."
Before his journey, Stuart and his bike set up at The Turf to collect donations, ahead of what would be Wrexham AFC's big league promotion match.
Hopefully the good luck will continue, and he will be in for some decent weather on the way.

Scared team-mate found Lions star sat on toilet thinking he was going to die

Scared team-mate found Lions star sat on toilet thinking he was going to die 'I can tell this story, because spoiler alert, he's not dead,' explained Ugo Monye. Andy Powell had a little too much caffeine. (Image: (Photo by)) Former England international Ugo Monye has revealed Andy Powell once "thought he was going to die" after a night out on a British and Irish Lions tour. The former Harlequins flyer told the tale on talkSPORT, with hosts Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein cracking up. ‌ Powell and Monye were teammates on the 2009 Lions tour to South Africa, where the touring side lost 2-1 to the Springboks. Despite going 2-0 down, Sir Ian McGeechan's side were victorious in the third and final match, winning 28-9. Two tries from Shane Williams and one from Monye himself helped seal the win. ‌ A plethora of Welsh players were on that tour, much different to the 2025 edition, which featured only two Welshmen in the initial squad. ‌ Speaking to talkSPORT, Monye revealed that ex-Cardiff star Powell got himself into a right pickle during their celebrations. "I shared a room with a guy called Andy Powell," began Monye, before telling the tale of Powell's golf buggy trip down the M4 to the hosts. "Were you nervous about going to sleep?," asked Goldstein. "100%," replied Monye. Article continues below "I remember on the night of the third Test, we'd just won and it was a brilliant night. "He was just as committed on the pitch as he was to the social side. Everyone knows that Super Sunday is better than Super Saturday. "Generally, before a game you would have a caffeine tablet to get yourself revved up and motivated. He took four of these after the game because he wanted to go through the night. ‌ "So, he had had four caffeine tablets, a bucket load of Red Bulls, and then we got into bed at around three or four. "0.3 seconds later he sat bolt upright, because shock horror, he is having heart palpitations. "I can tell this story, because spoiler alert, he's not dead. ‌ "So, he woke up, having heart palpitations, I'm not in a fit state to manage him and I'm also not a doctor. So I've left the room to try and find our team doctor who was, funnily enough, asleep. There was no one around. I was frightened. "I go back into the room to not even consider what state he might be in. He's sat on the toilet with his phone in his hand, and his screensaver of his dog. And I was like: 'What are you doing?' "He was saying goodbye to his dog because he thought he was going to die." Article continues below "I just wonder what the stories you can't tell are," joked Goldstein, before all three cracked up. In the game itself, it was Monye who crossed for a try, with Wales legend Shane Williams grabbing a brace. Other Welsh internationals in the squad that day were Stephen Jones, Mike Phillips, Matthew Rees, Martyn Williams, Alun Wyn Jones and James Hook, although the latter did not come off the bench.

Leanne and Dan, who run the YouTube channel The Buddymoon, have been discovering the picturesque locations of Wales in their van, covering everything from the Brecon Beacons all the way up to the Llangollen Canal. ‌ In the most recent instalment of their Welsh journey, entitled 'I Think We Have Found The Best Part of Wales', the pair hit the road to explore what the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd has to offer. ‌ During their trip, the couple appeared to relish the sights, stopping at local gems including Porthmadog, Criccieth, and the whistling sands of Traeth Porthor. ‌ But when they reached a well-known village, the couple faced a particular challenge. This could have been because their vehicle was too "big" as upon arrival, they discovered they couldn't "even stop". She revealed that as a youngster, her father would take them to the harbour during seaside trips, where they would similarly observe the boats coming and going. Leanne said it was "such a fun time" to sit and watch this happen, adding that it was a "nostalgic moment" that she was feeling in Abersoch. Dan subsequently remarked that Abersoch appeared "very nice" from their aerial drone, describing the view as "absolutely incredible."

Tourists find 'absolutely beautiful' North Wales village but immediately notice problem

A couple encountered an unforeseen problem when they visited an "absolutely beautiful" village in North Wales. Leanne and Dan, the faces behind the YouTube channel The Buddymoon, have been exploring the idyllic sights of Wales in their van, spanning everywhere from the Brecon Beacons right up to the Llangollen Canal. In the latest video instalment of their Welsh adventure, titled 'I Think We Have Found The Best Part of Wales', the couple takes to the road to investigate the sights on offer on the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd. On their travels, the couple seemed to enjoy the sights, visiting local favourites such as Porthmadog, Criccieth, and the whistling sands of Traeth Porthor. However, when they arrived at a popular village, they experienced a specific problem, possibly due to their transport being too "big". As they entered, they learned that they couldn't "even stop". Dan said: "So we just come to a town called Abersoch - Abersoch? Probably saying it wrong, but we can't find any parking, so I don't think it's going to be a town that we can actually stop in, but it looks absolutely beautiful. "Like, over here, you can see the beach and the mountains and the greenery, but we can't find any parking; we're too big. Guess we're not going to be able to explore this town because we can't park the van." Abersoch is a small seaside village that offers visitors access to picturesque beaches and watersports, including wakeboarding, paddleboarding, waterskiing, sailing and windsurfing. Known as the "Welsh Riviera" and "Cheshire-by-the-sea", the village was even named one of the most desirable locations in the UK in 2023 by Leanne noted that Abersoch was "definitely a lot busier" than the last place they visited, but dubbed it "really cute" and pointed out the charming local shops and cafes. She also spotted tractors launching boats on the beach, so, undeterred by the parking situation, Leanne left Dan and the van at the top of a path so she could take a look. In a nostalgic recollection, Leanne highlighted how the tractors brought the boats in and out of the water, prompting her to recall a similar scene from her childhood. She explained that when she was little, her father used to take them to the harbour when they visited the seaside, where they would also watch the boats go in and out. Leanne said it was "such a fun time" to sit and watch this happen, adding that it was a "nostalgic moment" that she was feeling in Abersoch. The couple's praise of the village didn't end there, however. Dan later noted that Abersoch was also "very nice" from above with their drone, saying it looked "absolutely incredible."
