US State Department approves $4.7bn surface-to-air missile package to Egypt

Al Jazeera25-07-2025
The US State Department has approved the potential sale of a surface-to-air missile package worth $4.67bn to the government of Egypt, the Pentagon has announced.
In a statement on Thursday, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said it had agreed to a 'possible Foreign Military Sale' of a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) package, including four AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar systems, hundreds of missiles, and dozens of guidance units.
NASAMS is a US- and Norwegian-developed air defence system designed to engage hostile aircraft, aerial drones, and cruise missiles.
US government employees and contractors will also provide engineering, technical and logistics support services to the Egyptian military as part of the potential deal.
'This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major non-NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,' the Defense Security Cooperation Agency statement said, referring to Egypt.
The prime contractor will be a US multinational aerospace and defence conglomerate, RTX Corporation, located in the state of Massachusetts.
The defence agency said that it had already 'delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale'.
If approved, about 26 US government employees and 34 contractors will travel to Egypt for an 'extended period' in order to provide training and technical and logistics support.
Cairo, a longstanding US ally in the Middle East, has received generous defence funding from Washington since it signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979.
But there have been indications of warming ties between Egypt and China in recent years, including the countries' first-ever joint military drills, hosted in April and May this year.
Called the 'Eagles of Civilization 2025', the countries' air forces conducted two weeks of training, which the Egyptian military described as part of 'broader efforts to deepen defence ties with China and strengthen joint military capabilities'.

Cathay Pacific unveils deal to buy 14 Boeing jets

Agencies Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific said Wednesday it would place an US$8.1-billion order for 14 Boeing jets, its first with the US aircraft maker for more than a decade. In a filing to the city's stock exchange, the airline said it would 'purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft' and had 'secured the right to acquire up to seven additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft'. Cathay already has a fleet of more than 230 mostly passenger aircraft. The new order expects the aircraft to be delivered by 2034, according to a separate filing. Cathay was one of the first buyers to commit to Boeing's 777X program when it unveiled the purchase of 21 aircraft in said in a statement the new deal brought the order book of 777-9 aircraft—'the world's largest twin-engine airplane'—to 35. The jets, designed to reduce fuel use and emissions, would meet Cathay's growing global travel demand, Boeing added. Hong Kong's aviation sector was hit hard by COVID-era policies, which imposed strict rules on travelers that kept it internationally isolated before they were lifted in late 2022. In 2024 Cathay's attributable profit rose slightly to US$1.27 billion and it announced earlier this year that its flights were finally back to pre-pandemic levels. On Wednesday, the firm reported its attributable profit rose slightly to HK$3.65 billion in the first six months of 2025, benefiting from a pick-up in travel demand in Asia. Total revenue in that period increased 9.5 percent to US$6.92 billion. The company also declared an interim dividend of HK$20 cents per share. Chairman Patrick Healy heralded a 'solid financial performance' in the filing. 'Our first-half result was driven by higher passenger volumes albeit with lower yields, a consistent cargo performance, and lower fuel price compared with the same period in 2024,' Healy said. The company's passenger airlines, including Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express, have launched or announced 19 new destinations so far in 2025, with 'more to come', he said, adding that they now fly to more than 100 passenger destinations.

US sanctions Mexican cartel figures, including popular rapper El Makabelico

The US Department of the Treasury has announced sanctions on assets of four individuals that it linked to Mexico-based Cartel del Noreste, including the popular hip-hop artist El Makabelico. The sanctions target three 'high-ranking members' of Cartel del Noreste (Northeast Cartel), which splintered off from Los Zetas, as well as an alleged 'prominent associate' of the group, Ricardo Hernandez, a 34-year-old musician known as El Makabelico who has millions of followers on social media. The Treasury said El Makabelico's concerts and events are used to launder money on behalf of the organisation, 'with 50 percent of his royalties from streaming platforms going directly to the group.' The Treasury identified the three other individuals as Abdon Rodriguez, Antonio Romero, and Francisco Esqueda. Washington said the sanctioned individuals have played a critical role in the cartel's activities, including drug trafficking, extortion, and money laundering. The Treasury said it had previously sanctioned two 'high-ranking members' of the cartel in May. The cartel was among those that President Donald Trump's administration in February designated as 'global terrorist organisations'. 'The Treasury Department will continue to be relentless in its effort to put America First by targeting terrorist drug cartels. These cartels poison Americans with fentanyl and conduct human smuggling operations along our southwest border,' said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a statement by the Treasury Department. 'Treasury, in close coordination with our law enforcement partners, is committed to a full-frontal assault on the cartels, targeting the leadership and revenue streams that enable their horrific crimes.' The Cartel del Noreste is considered one of Mexico's most violent drug trafficking organisations and wields significant influence along the US-Mexico border, particularly in Laredo, Texas, the Treasury said. DEL Records, which Hernandez lists as his label on social media, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
