‘Fantastic' teenager found dead in lake near Birmingham as school and football club lead tributes
Daniel Drewitt went missing after going into water at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, just after 6pm on Thursday.
Rescuers searched for the 16-year-old, but his body was discovered later into the evening.
Staff at Colmers School and Sixth Form College in Rednal paid tribute to the boy, describing him as a 'confident, full of life, a talented sportsman, and so deeply loved by staff and fellow pupils alike'.
A former player at Northfield Town FC, the football club also released a statement following Daniel's death. 'Daniel was a fantastic young man who always wore a smile on his face whether on or off the pitch and was loved by so many,' the club said.
West Midlands Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.
'We are supporting Daniel's family at this tragic time. Our thoughts are with them, and we ask that they are given privacy,' a force spokesperson added.
Staff at the boy's school said they were deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of the Year 11 student.
'His warm presence and positive spirit will be sorely missed,' staff said.
They added: "We know how deeply this loss will be felt by many, and we are committed to ensuring no member of our school community feels alone in their grief.
"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Daniel's family. We ask urgent respect for their privacy at this profoundly difficult time."
Staff at the school said they were doing all they could to support the school community during a difficult time.
A spokesperson for the school said: 'Our pastoral team, school counsellors, and senior staff are working together to provide dedicated spaces and support for both students and staff.
'This includes opportunities for quiet reflection, one-to-one conversations, and access to emotional and wellbeing support throughout the days and weeks ahead.'

Funeral director appears in court charged over human remains found at premises
A funeral director has appeared in court to face 65 charges spanning more than 10 years after a major investigation into human remains found at his premises. Robert Bush, 47, appeared at Hull Crown Court on Wednesday to face 30 counts of preventing a lawful burial plus a range of other charges relating to bodies found at one of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors' sites in Hull. Bush stood in the glass fronted dock and spoke only to confirm his name and personal details. No pleas were entered. The bearded defendant, formerly of Kirk Ella, East Yorkshire, but now of Otley, West Yorkshire, wore a grey three-piece suit with a white shirt and a patterned tie for the 15-minute hearing, and was flanked in the dock by one security officer. He was bailed to appear for a plea hearing on October 15. Humberside Police launched a probe into the funeral home after a report of 'concern for care of the deceased' in March last year. A month after the investigation started the force said it had received more than 2,000 calls on a dedicated phone line from families concerned about their loved ones' ashes. Bush was charged in April, after what officers said was a 'complex, protracted and highly sensitive 10-month investigation' into the firm's three sites in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Staffordshire officer jailed for inappropriate relationships
A former police officer has been jailed for 18 months after admitting improper use of police powers after he engaged in inappropriate relationships with people he met through his Mills, formerly of Staffordshire Police, pleaded guilty to two counts of corrupt or improper exercise of police powers and privileges at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in 22-year-old, of Bude, Cornwall, struck up a personal and sexual relationship with a vulnerable woman, a force spokesperson also developed a relationship with a witness he had dealt with in the course of his duties, they added. Mills, who was based in the south of the county, was arrested and suspended in January 2023 following an investigation by Staffordshire Police's professional standards department. He later resigned, the force confirmed. "Mills' behaviour represents a serious breach of trust and police values," said Acting Deputy Chief Constable Caroline Marsh."His admission of guilt reflects the strength of the evidence gathered during the investigation."Marsh said extensive training had been delivered to all officers on the importance of maintaining professional boundaries and recognising improper relationships."Officers and staff are actively encouraged to report any concerns to our professional standards department," she said."Mechanisms are also in place to allow anonymous reporting, ensuring that individuals feel safe and supported in coming forward."
