Diesel price up, petrol price down from midnight
From Wednesday, fuel prices will be adjusted as follows: Petrol 93 and 95: 28c/ l decrease;
decrease; Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 65c/ l increase;
increase; Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 63c/ l increase; and
increase; and Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): 32c/ l increase.
The main reasons for the fuel price adjustments are due to the average Brent Crude oil price decreasing slightly from $69.36 to $69.06 during the period under review. The main contributing factor to the lower crude oil price is the decision by Opec to increase production and the uncertainty caused by looming US trade tariffs, including secondary tariffs, which could affect global economic growth and demand for crude oil.
The average international petrol prices decreased in line with the decrease in crude oil prices. The prices of diesel and paraffin increased due to low stocks in the US, unplanned refinery shutdowns and closures of refineries in the EU, which have resulted in tight supply.
The rand appreciated against the US dollar from 17.84 to 17.76 compared to the previous period.

Brazil seeks WTO relief against Trump tariffs
BRASILIA - Brazil on Wednesday approached the World Trade Organization (WTO) for relief against a hefty trade tariff imposed by President Donald Trump on more than a third of US-bound exports from the Latin American powerhouse. The 50-percent tariff on several Brazilian goods went into force Wednesday over what Trump has termed a "witch hunt" against his far-right ally Jair Bolsonaro, the former president on trial for plotting a coup. Sources in the government of incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told AFP Brasilia had filed a request for consultations with the US mission to the WTO -- the first formal step in the trade body's dispute settlement process. Trump's latest tariff salvo raised duties on Brazil from 10 percent to 50 percent for key exports including coffee, beef and sugar. Exempt were nearly 700 other exports including civilian planes, orange juice and pulp, Brazil nuts, and some iron, steel and aluminum products. Brazil's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin previously told journalists the new tariff would apply to about 36 percent of the country's exports to the United States, equal to trade of about $14.5 billion last year. Trump's Brazil tariff is among the highest imposed on US trading partners and was framed in openly political terms, sweeping aside centuries-old trade ties and a surplus Brasilia put at $284 million last year. 'Judge and jury' In an executive order last week, the Trump administration lashed out at Brazilian officials for "unjustified criminal charges" against Bolsonaro, on trial for allegedly plotting to wrest back power after losing the 2022 presidential election to Lula. Trump's order also charged that the Lula government's recent policies and actions threatened the US economy, national security, and foreign policy. US tensions with Brazil are not likely to dissipate soon, with a Brazilian judge on Monday placing Bolsonaro under house arrest pending the outcome of his trial for contravening a social media ban. The judge, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, presides over Bolsonaro's trial and was himself hit with financial sanctions this week as Washington claimed he had "taken it upon himself to be judge and jury in an unlawful witch hunt." Moraes has clashed repeatedly with the far-right in Brazil, and with tech titan Elon Musk over the spread of online misinformation. Bolsonaro risks decades in prison if found guilty on the coup charges that had allegedly also included discussions to assassinate Lula and other senior officials. The tariff hike on Brazilian goods came a day before a separate wave of higher duties on dozens of economies ranging from the European Union to Taiwan. Analysts at Pantheon Macroeconomics estimate the pending increases would boost the average effective tariff rate for US imports to nearly 20 percent.

The Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, congratulated the students on being awarded scholarships sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). A total of 11 South African students received the Chinese government scholarship, while eight students were awarded the Academic Education Programmes scholarship. The students were admitted to top-tier Chinese universities, pursuing degree programmes in fields essential to South Africa's national development, such as cybersecurity, engineering management, biological sciences, and healthcare. Wu encouraged them to immerse themselves in China's rich culture, witness its breathtaking landscapes, and experience the country's modern civilisation, including high-speed rail, digital payments, smart cities, and cutting-edge technologies. "Your experience will prove that choosing to study in China is the right decision," he said. He expressed appreciation to China's partners, including the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Department of Basic Education. "Educational cooperation is an integral part of the China-South Africa All-round Strategic Cooperative Partnership in the New Era," Wu said. He said the Chinese government scholarship served as a vital source of momentum for people-to-people exchanges, supporting South African youth in broadening their horizons, enhancing their capacities, and realising their dreams. Thandazo Sithole, one of the scholarship recipients, expressed her excitement about starting her studies abroad. She said she had always dreamed of doing something special, particularly in innovation and technology, and saw this scholarship as an opportunity to pursue her aspirations. Sithole described the scholarship as more than just an academic opportunity, but a chance for access, representation, and rewriting the narrative for African youth. On behalf of her fellow recipients, she said: "We are not just going to China as students, we are going as ambassadors of our country. This is an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a new culture, learn cutting-edge skills, and gain new ideas that can help shape a better world." Sandisa Maqubela, deputy director at the Department of Higher Education and Training's National Skills Fund, said the partnership between the department and China began in 2012 with an agreement to send 10 students to China and Sweden. While she acknowledged the department's value for its strategic partnership with China, she also noted that the current intake of students for 2025 was relatively small. Image: Supplied Jubilee Metals Group's Roan copper concentrator in Zambia is fully operational following an upgrade, exceeding July's targeted production by reaching 384 tons of copper units. The mining group, which aims to become a significant copper explorer, miner, and producer of concentrates and refined cathodes in Zambia, stated in an update on Wednesday that Roan's production in August was already above the targeted production rate of 350 tons. The Roan project, first announced by Jubilee in 2021 and upgraded in phases, is the cornerstone of the company's copper production ambitions alongside the Sable refinery. Jubilee is currently disposing of its South Africa-based chrome and platinum operations, with agreements in final form, and a shareholders' meeting is being scheduled soon. Jubilee's share price sank 5.4% to 70 cents on the JSE on Wednesday afternoon. 'I am pleased to report significant progress across our Zambia portfolio, which has all the assets we need to maintain momentum on our copper expansion strategy,' said Jubilee's CEO Leon Coetzee in a statement. He said that they were building a robust copper production profile by dedicating processing capacity at Roan to a combination of third-party sourced mined material and process tailings, while advancing the Munkoyo and Project G mining operations to feed an expanded Sable refinery. The Munkoyo and Project G mines are being developed to be the anchor source of copper material for cathode production at Sable. Further large-scale exploration properties have been secured, Coetzee said. Munkoyo consists of a series of nine open-pits, and resource drilling is underway to establish the potential of combining these pits into one large open-pit operation. The Large Waste tailings dump is understood to contain over 240 million tons. A review of the total surface stock portfolio was done. A monetisation program is underway to sell the lowest-ranking non-core tailings assets, with about an $18 million deal value already transacted over the past six months. Munkoyo's open-pit operation's drilling program has started, with an initial eight holes completed in partnership with a mining and exploration company. Drilling results are being reviewed, and early indications suggest potential to combine pits 2 to 4 into a single large open pit to offer increased mining flexibility and throughput. Discussions are in progress with a partner to further expanded Munkoyo and develop Project G while undertaking an exploration program of the new exploration properties. Jubilee's copper production for the first half was impacted by power and infrastructure challenges, and Roan was placed under care and maintenance. Following a successful Roan restart, copper unit production reached 757 tons in the second half, with annual production reaching 2 211 tons versus the guidance for the 2026 financial year of 5 100 tons. Further capital-dependent projects either underway or targeted to start next year could potentially increase annual copper production by about 10,000 tons. Coetzee stated that the energy-related challenges faced earlier this year helped them emerge with a clearer, more focused strategy backed by secure power supply and higher-value material supply agreements. Sable is undergoing an expansion to offer an annual processing capacity of about 14 000 tons of copper units upon completion, which is anticipated in the first quarter of next year. Mining at Munkoyo was temporarily halted for July and August 2025 while the extended pit design was completed based on the drilling results, and ore delivery to Sable is set to recommence in September 2025. On the Large Waste project, Jubilee plans to roll out a series of 25,000 tons per month modular processing units on-site, based on the design at Roan. BUSINESS REPORT
