US Fed to end oversight program for banks' crypto activities
The Federal Reserve Board said that it would end a 'novel activities supervision program' set up in 2023 to supervise certain activities related to crypto assets and distributed ledger technology. In a Friday notice, the Fed said it will sunset the program created in August 2023 and return to 'monitoring banks' novel activities through the normal supervisory process.' The 2023 program said it would be 'risk-focused' and include supervision of banks providing 'deposits, payments, and lending to crypto-asset-related entities and fintechs.' 'Since the Board started its program to supervise certain crypto and fintech activities in banks, the Board has strengthened its understanding of those activities, related risks, and bank risk management practices,' said the Fed. 'As a result, the Board is integrating that knowledge and the supervision of those activities back into the standard supervisory process and is rescinding its 2023 supervisory letter creating the program.' Though not necessarily suggesting a scaleback in oversight of banks dealing with crypto companies, US government agencies have taken a softer approach to regulating and handling digital assets under the Trump administration. Since January, the Securities and Exchange Commission has dropped several investigations and enforcement actions into crypto companies, and statements from leadership at the Treasury suggested the department would fall in line with the White House's policy setting up a national crypto reserve. Leadership at the Fed becoming a political issue US President Donald Trump has been publicly challenging the Fed's independence in determining federal interest rates, often personally criticizing Chair Jerome Powell, whom he nominated in 2017. Powell's term as chair is expected to end in May 2026, while his term as a Fed governor won't end until January 2028. Adriana Kugler, a member of the Fed's board of governors and the Federal Open Market Committee, resigned from her position on Aug. 8. Trump nominated Council of Economic Advisors Chair Stephen Miran to fill Kugler's role until January, when he is expected to pick a permanent replacement. Source:

Qatar: Fintech gains momentum with digital payments and blockchain at forefront
DOHA: Qatar's fintech landscape is surging forward with remarkable momentum, driven by bold government initiatives, modern regulatory frameworks, and a thriving ecosystem of startups and corporate champions, an expert remarked. With nearly 99 percent of Qatar's population using online and smartphone penetration nearly universal, digital transactions have become the norm. Contactless payments now account for 96 percent of in-store transactions, spanning platforms such as Karwa Taxis and PayPal-enabled services, according to the MENA Fintech Association. 'Qatar is no longer just following global fintech trends—it's becoming a regional leader,' Sarah McAllister, a global fintech analyst, told The Peninsula. 'The integration of digital payments, open banking frameworks, and blockchain infrastructure is not only modernising financial services but is positioning Qatar as an innovation hub in the Gulf.' Meanwhile, the Qatar Mobile Payment initiative, launched by the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) in April 2025, allows users to link multiple wallets to a single phone number, streamlining transactions further, and mobile money platforms such as Ooredoo Money are innovating to serve expatriate communities, which enables remittances and cross-border transfers, including to PayPal accounts. The QCB introduced its fintech strategy in 2023, which features open banking as a key pillar, with a formal regulatory framework expected by 2026. On the other hand, blockchain and digital assets are emerging as strategic frontiers. Tasmu Digital Valley projects that Qatar's blockchain market could skyrocket from $33m in 2022 to $253m by 2026. McAllister noted that these developments have attracted global attention. Doha hosted the MENA Fintech Summit this year, drawing policymakers, investors, and innovators from across the region. The event highlighted sessions like the insurtech, blockchain, embedded finance, and the role of fintech in sustainable development. 'What sets Qatar's strategy apart is its coherence: regulatory foresight via the QCB, ecosystem development through QFTH, and the digital infrastructure built by private and public players all align under Qatar 2030's vision,' the market expert noted. As Qatar continues to expand its fintech footprint, several key trends are emerging. With open APIs and digital partnerships, banks and non-bank players are increasingly embedding financial services into everyday platforms. On the other hand, with Islamic and sustainable fintech, tailored products that align with religious and ESG standards are gaining ground. Additionally, the QCB's phased licensing for digital banks, with initial capital requirements lays a strong foundation for innovation. Industry leaders stress that these efforts reflect Qatar's ambition to build a diversified and knowledge-based economy. © Dar Al Sharq Press, Printing and Distribution. All Rights Reserved. Grow London, London Stock Exchange and The Global City partner with London Fintech Summit
London FinTech Summit, part of Fintech Week London, has announced strategic partnerships with Grow London (London & Partners), the London Stock Exchange, and The Global City — three of the most influential institutions driving London's financial and business leadership. The partnerships position the newly launched Summit as a key moment for the UK's FinTech sector and a powerful platform for global engagement. Scheduled for 6–7 October 2025 and organised by Trescon, the Summit will bring together financial centres, regulators, investors, and innovators from around the world, building strategic corridors for growth and accelerating partnerships across borders, markets, and sectors. As FinTech continues to reshape the world's financial systems, the London FinTech Summit offers a new focal point for international cooperation. With UK FinTech investment hitting £6.8 billion in 2024 (Innovate Finance), up 25% year-on-year, and London ranked as Europe's top FinTech destination, the capital is uniquely placed to host this next-generation summit. London also continues to attract more FinTech investment than any other city in Europe and is home to over 3,000 FinTechs, making it a natural choice for a summit of this scale and ambition. The involvement of strategic partners adds institutional weight and international visibility to the event. Grow London will support international outreach, helping attract global investors, entrepreneurs, and growth-stage FinTechs to the Summit. The London Stock Exchange, a key driver of capital formation in the UK, will play a central role in connecting FinTech companies with the funding required to scale. The Global City, the City of London Corporation's international promotional campaign, will drive engagement with London's wider financial and professional services sector, encouraging cross-sector collaboration. Talking about the partnership, David Butcher, head of Fintech and Cyber, London & Partners said: "We're proud to support Fintech Week London and the London Fintech Summit as they bring global FinTech leaders to the heart of the capital." He continued, 'London remains a world-class hub for innovation, and events like these showcase the strength of our ecosystem to cities around the world." With a focus on cross-border collaboration, the London FinTech Summit goes beyond keynotes and exhibition stands. It will act as a launchpad for deals, partnerships, and policy ideas that extend well beyond the UK. Naveen Bharadwaj, CEO of Trescon, commented: "This is where financial capitals connect. We're building a platform that brings global leaders together, not just to talk, but to act. From capital to compliance, from start-ups to regulators, this Summit will drive international collaboration that moves the FinTech sector forward at scale." With influential partners, a world-class location, and a growing international coalition of attendees, London FinTech Summit is set to become a fixture of the global FinTech calendar – a place where cross-border ideas turn into market-shaping action.
