NFL announces new award that is primed for Christian Darrisaw to win
The NFL has done a tremendous job of marketing its players over the decades, on offense and defense alike. In unique cases, they have even been able to market some kickers and punters.
That being said, offensive linemen have seemingly always been forgotten. Much like defense in the NBA, they are one of the most integral parts of the game, but they are often overlooked. When people talk about Michael Jordan, they talk about the scoring titles and championships, not the nine times he was named to the first-team all-defensive NBA team.
When it comes to the offensive linemen in the NFL, the league is starting to fix that.
On Wednesday, the NFL announced a new award, the Protector of the Year Award, to be given each year at NFL Honors. The league has long wanted to recognize the men who keep their star quarterbacks upright and able to make plays.
As for who could be a favorite for that award, Vikings fans could hear their own Christian Darrisaw receive it come next February. While he is coming off a season-ending injury, he remains one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL, and the league may soon recognize that as well.

Stephen A. Smith Predicts Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo Will Join Same NBA Team

Stephen A. Smith Predicts Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo Will Join Same NBA Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Besides the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers, who are still focused on raising a championship banner, the rest of the league has its eyes set on improving its rosters next year. Some names that have been floated as potentially being on the move include Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant. Advertisement The Greek Freak just posted his third straight campaign averaging over 30 points, tagged along with 11.9 rebounds and a career high 6.5 assists per game. Despite everything he's given the organization, there is speculation that the two-time MVP wants out of Milwaukee due to the team's consistent lack of postseason success. The Bucks have failed to make it out of the first round in each of their last three playoff appearances. The Phoenix Suns' power forward is coming off season averages of 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game across 62 appearances. The Suns actively shopped Durant at this year's trade deadline and ultimately failed to reach a deal. They were then eliminated from playoff contention before the end of the regular season. Smith revealed his top five trade destinations for both Antetokounmpo and Durant. Advertisement He named the New York Knicks as the number one option for both forwards, suggesting the two could join forces at Madison Square Garden soon. "The New York Knicks. The market. The Mecca. Madison Square Garden. Center Stage," declared Smith, a vocal Knicks fan. "Jalen Brunson in the house. Keep Anunoby if you can. You can let Bridges go. Hell, if you had to lose Karl-Anthony Towns for him (Antetokounmpo). Yes. Yes." Then Smith went on to discuss Durant. "Now him, that might be because he's 30 going 36 years of age. You understand what I'm saying?" Smith added. "I don't know, but I'm very certain about that. Either way you slice it, KD, [expletive] it, your [expletive] should have been in New York to begin with! You should have never went to Brooklyn." The Knicks appear to be in clear "win-now" mode following the dismissal of five-year head coach Tom Thibodeau, despite the franchise reaching its first Conference Finals in 25 years. Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards' Possible Superteam Gets a Major Update

Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards' Possible Superteam Gets a Major Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Phoenix Suns power forward Kevin Durant is one of this off-season's hottest commodities among NBA teams looking to add that missing piece to their roster. Recent reports suggest the star's most likely destinations include the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat and Houston Rockets, according to Yahoo Sports. Advertisement On Saturday morning's episode of "The Kevin O'Connor Show," the host revealed details about the Phoenix's approach to Durant. "I've heard personally from sources that I've talked to that the Suns are being really, really, really aggressive trying to get this done," he reported. "They want to get it done sooner than later. It's my understanding the Suns want some clarity of what their draft night is going to look like." Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant brings the ball up as Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards defends him at Target Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images O'Connor later discussed the other side of the trade, disclosing Minnesota's true likelihood to land the superstar this offseason. "Minnesota before July 1 is a second apron team. So, they can't aggregate salaries until July 1. So, if you're talking Minnesota, it's incredibly difficult to put a [KD] deal together, which is why with Phoenix rushing things here, I don't think it's Minnesota,' O'Connor said. Advertisement Durant shows no signs of slowing down, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists this season in 62 games played. Despite his stat lines, the Suns missed the playoffs after being swept in the first round in 2024. As Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Thursday, "Which team believes they're a Kevin Durant away from winning a championship, that's what this could come down to." With recent speculation, a team may swing on a Durant deal in the coming weeks. Related: Stephen A. Houston Rockets Lock down Steven Adams

Houston Rockets Lock down Steven Adams originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Houston Rockets center Steven Adams has agreed to a three- year 39 million contract extension to stay with the franchise, sources tell ESPN. After playing a key rotation and leadership role in the Rockets' playoff run, the new deal keeps a top center out of free agency. Standing at 6 feet 11 inches and weighing over 250 pounds, the New Zealand-born center has built a reputation in the NBA not just for his physicality and toughness, but for his unselfish play, quiet leadership, and endearing personality. Advertisement Adams earned a reputation as one of the toughest and most reliable centers in the league. He was a perfect complement to stars like Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun often doing the dirty work that doesn't appear on the stat sheet. His screens were punishing, his rebounding was relentless, and his calm demeanor provided balance to a team full of energy and star power. Adams is one of the better rebounders in the NBA. He understands angles, uses his body to box out effectively, and has a natural feel for where the ball is going to land. He's not the kind of center who chases stats; he focuses on doing the little things right, which consistently puts him in the best spot to secure the rebound. The Rockets lock up the soon to be 32 year old center to form one of the top big man rotations in the NBA.
