Espionage case: Hisar court extends Jyoti Malhotra's judicial custody
A local court on Monday extended the judicial custody of social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra and fixed her case's hearing on June 23.
The 33-year-old YouTuber appeared before the court of Hisar Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Sunil Kumar through video conferencing on Monday which extended her judicial custody by two weeks.
"The court has extended her judicial custody and fixed June 23 for the next hearing in this case," her lawyer Kumar Mukesh said.
Hisar Police arrested Malhotra on suspicion of espionage on May 16. She was subsequently remanded to five days of police custody by the court.
Following the completion of the remand, the court extended it by four more days on the police's plea for further questioning.
On May 26, the court remanded her to judicial custody for 14 days.
Malhotra, who hails from the city, ran a YouTube channel "Travel with JO".
She was arrested at the New Aggarsain Extension and booked under provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Hisar Police previously said no evidence had emerged to indicate Malhotra had access to any military- or defence-related information but claimed she was in contact with some people, aware that they were Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIO).
Police sources said she was in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023.
India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly indulging in espionage.
The police have claimed Pakistani intelligence operatives were developing Malhotra as an asset.
Punjab Police recently said Punjab-based YouTuber Jasbir Singh, who was arrested on espionage charges on June 4, was in close contact with Malhotra.
Singh, who was found to be associated with a PIO, was in touch with a Pakistan High Commission official who was recently expelled from New Delhi on charges of spying and had met Pakistan Army officials during one of his three visits to the neighbouring country, Punjab Police said previously.
After Malhotra's arrest, Singh attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection, Punjab Police added.

76,007 Billion Pakistani Rupees: Highest-Ever Debt Mountain Crushes Islamabad

Pakistan's debt is at its highest-ever level, Pakistan's Economic Survey released on Monday has revealed. This paints a worrisome situation of Pakistan's finances. The document carrying all details and figures in Pakistani rupees, reviewed by CNN-NEWS18 says that the total public debt of Pakistan (ending March 2025) has reached 76,007 Billion Pakistani Rupee (76 trillion), the highest-ever in the country's history. This means the debt is Rs 23.1 trillion in Indian rupees and 269.344 US dollars. This public debt of Pakistan has nearly doubled in last four years, as it stood at Rs 39,860 Billion in 2020-21. Ten years ago, Pakistan's Public debt stood at Rs 17,380 billion. So, the public debt has ballooned by nearly five times in Pakistan over a decade. The Rs 76,007 Billion figure includes Rs 51,518 billion of domestic debt and Rs 24,489 billion of external debt. The Economic Survey of Pakistan has said that 'excessive or poorly managed debt can pose serious vulnerabilities, such as rising interest burdens and can undermine long-term fiscal sustainability and economic security if left unaddressed." Pakistan has received a US $ 1.03 billion aid under the IMF's Extended Fund Facility. 'The growth in public debt during the first nine months of FY 25 was 6.7 per cent," the economic survey has said. Pakistan has been infamous for seeking bailouts from international organisations as well as 'friendly countries' with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif going to the extent of saying that 'today, when we go to any friendly country or make a phone call, they think that we have come to them to beg for money." Sharif had earlier also said even small economies have surpassed Pakistan, 'and we have been wandering for the past 75 years carrying a begging bowl". CNN-NEWS18 earlier reported today that while India has brought a record number of people out of poverty as per the World Bank but the latter's latest projection on Pakistan says nearly 45 per cent of its population lives in poverty, while 16.5 per cent lives in extreme poverty. This is after a World Bank revision of the threshold poverty line last week. In an assessment earlier this April, the World Bank had said 1.9 million additional people fell into poverty in 2024-25 in Pakistan. India has been making a case before the IMF and the World Bank that Pakistan has been misusing global aid for the purposes of terrorism against India. The World Bank data could be further used by India to raise strong doubts on how Pakistan has been using global aid from agencies like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the purported benefit of its common people. Policeman shot dead by TTP-affiliated terrorists in northwest Pakistan
A Pakistani policeman was shot dead by affiliates of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said on Monday. The TTP terrorists gunned down the policeman in the Lakki Marwat district of the province. As the militants tried to flee, local residents and police pursued them, killing one in an exchange of fire, police said. The TTP, also known as the Pakistan Taliban, was set up as an umbrella group of several militant outfits in 2007. Its main aim is to impose its strict brand of Islam across Pakistan. The group, believed to be close to al-Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban, has been blamed for several deadly attacks across Pakistan, including an attack on army headquarters in 2009, assaults on military bases, and the 2008 bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.

Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, who Pakistan contacted for ceasefire, appointed Deputy Chief of Army Staff
Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, who Pakistan contacted for a ceasefire during India's strikes on Pakistani airbases in Operation Sindoor, has been appointed as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy). Lt. Gen Ghai will continue to serve in his current role as Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), the Ministry of Defence announced on Monday, June 9. The DGMOs are senior officials of Indian Army, usually of the rank of Lieutenant General, responsible for overseeing all military operations in India and along its borders. Meanwhile, Lt. General Ghai's new role — Deputy Chief (Strategy) — is a relatively new but a critical position within the Indian Army, created to oversee key branches such as the Operations and Intelligence Directorates. It is regarded as one of the most significant appointments in the Army's strategic command structure, reported PTI. Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai took charge as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) on October 25 last year. A senior officer from the Kumaon Regiment, Lt. Gen Ghai has held several key operational commands throughout his career. Before his current role, Lt Gen Ghai served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Chinar Corps, where he led critical counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. His leadership in high-pressure environments has earned him wide recognition. On June 4, Lt Gen Ghai was also awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2025 (Phase-II), recognising his distinguished service. In a press briefing on May 12, a couple of days after the cessation of hostilities was announced with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, Lt Gen Ghai underlined the preparedness and coordinated response of the Indian armed forces. The operation involved precision strikes against terrorist targets without crossing the Line of Control or the International Boundary. Interestingly, the now Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) had used a cricket analogy, "Ashes to Ashes", to describe how India employed its multi-layered air defence systems to neutralise incoming aerial threats from Pakistan. Earlier this year, Lt Gen Ghai had also visited Manipur around February 25 to assess the security situation in the state, especially along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB). During his visit, he held meetings with key state officials, including the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the State Security Advisor, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police. The visit to the conflict-marred region aimed to review the operational preparedness of the Indian Army and assess the status of ongoing border infrastructure projects. Lt Gen Ghai had then, during his Manipur visit, stressed the importance of a "whole-of-government approach" to manage security challenges in the region. Discussions focused on normalising the prevailing situation, enhancing border management, and strengthening security infrastructure along the IMB, according to a prior statement from the Ministry of Defence.
