‘I'm awkward… I don't fit the mould' – James Wade slams darts chiefs and says he's ‘crushed' by Premier League snub

Scottish Sun21-07-2025
JAMES WADE says he feels 'like a lemon' being left out of the Premier League, but will keep working hard to be part of it.
'The Machine' recently moved up three places in the Professional Darts Corporation's Order of Merit to No.5, meaning he is one spot away from being automatically included in next year's Premier League with the rest of the top four.

The 2009 Premier League winner hasn't competed in the tournament since the 2022 edition, which saw him finish third.
Fellow Englishman Stephen Bunting is currently fourth in the PDC rankings, and after a strong first round showing at the World Matchplay by beating Joe Cullen 10-3 while averaging 104.44, Wade's form suggests he could push to overtake him.
However, 'exhausted' Wade has joked the PDC would 'change the qualification gaps' to stop him playing in the Premier League.
He said: "I think I've paid enough dues, and I think I've done enough things, and I think I've given enough of my life to the PDC that I'd like to get those rewards.

"But I don't think that'd ever happen to me. I think if I was to get back into the top four things would change with the qualification gaps.
"I just think it would change. I'm not what they need and I'm not probably what they want, but I want to be there a hundred percent.'
After the top four automatically qualify, the rest of the players are selected by Sky Sports and the PDC and assessed on marketability and popularity.
And Wade puts him being left out for the last three years on him being 'awkward.'

Asked for his theory on his exclusion, he said: 'Because I'm awkward. I'm an awkward character. I probably don't say the right things at the right times.
"If I was great at saying the right things at the right time, I probably would've been in all the World Series the last 12 months. But I don't quite fit into that mould.

"There's other players that do manage to get those things and unfortunately, I don't. I'd love to travel the world. I've been doing it for 25 years.
"Do you not think I want to travel the world? Do you not think I want to represent the PDC? Do you not think I want my children and my wife to see me do great things?
'If anything, it crushes me. It crushes me. Why wouldn't it crush me? I'm perhaps not getting what I maybe could have got. So, it's exhausting not to be in that.
"But I'll keep trying as hard as I can. I want to be in it all. I want to be part of it all. Of course, I do because when you're not in it, you feel like a lemon.'
Wade next faces Wessel Nijman in round two in Blackpool.

Russell Martin quizzed on Kieran Dowell's Rangers future as boss opens up on decision to select him

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUSSELL MARTIN has revealed that he hopes Kieran Dowell will still be a Rangers player when the summer window closes. The Rangers boss gave an update on the midfielder's future after he picked him again to face Panathinaikos in Athens - after selecting him for the first leg at Ibrox too. He was expected to be one of the many to head for the exit door in Martin's new regime. It's been the opposite, though, and Martin hopes that he'll be able to rely on the Englishman throughout the coming campaign. However, he admits that the decision is down to the player himself and understands that "things can change very, very quickly in football". On his performance in Greece, Martin said: "He took the ball well for us, out of possession, he pressed like a beast, he's so reliable, at set pieces he did a big job for us tonight. "Defensively, he did a big, big job, and he's a really good footballer. "I think we've come in with a clean slate and I hope people are seeing what he brings right now. "It's not his most natural position for sure, but he's doing a brilliant job for us out there, and he's been great since we've come in. "As a person and a character and the way he trains, he's been fantastic, and we'll see what happens. "There are lots of players who maybe thought their future was going to be elsewhere, or maybe they thought it was going to be here, and things can change very, very quickly in football. "So whilst he's here we've been so happy with him, and I hope he's part of our squad, I really do, but obviously things can change in football quickly. "I hope Kieran's enjoying it, but you'd have to ask him. He's been really good for us." Dowell joined Rangers on a free transfer from Norwich City along with Todd Cantwell in 2023. The 27-year-old failed to impress in Scotland, though, and was shipped out on loan to Birmingham City last season. Arsenal discover deadline to trigger Eberechi Eze's transfer clause as three issues emerge

Arsenal are moving on to Eberechi Eze as their next top transfer target after landing Viktor Gyokeres, but the Gunners must move quick before the Crystal Palace star's release clause expires in the middle of next month Arsenal are facing obstacles in their bid to sign Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze after learning that his £68million release clause expires two weeks before the end of the transfer window. ‌ The Gunners have switched their primary focus to signing Eze after finally sealing a move for long-term target Viktor Gyokeres, but it won't be a simple transfer to complete. ‌ Eze is in high demand this summer after another superb campaign for the Eagles saw him lead the club to their first ever FA Cup triumph, starring in the 2-1 win over Manchester City at Wembley. ‌ Arsenal have been busy in this transfer as Mikel Arteta looks to finally break their cycle of agony in their bid for the Premier League title. Gyokeres is their sixth signing of the window, following the arrivals of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke - and Eze would add some added quality into their midfield. According to a report by BBC Sport, Arsenal have "genuine interest" in Eze but have not shown any indications that they plan on triggering his £68m release clause. ‌ The Gunners now have a number of issues to thrash through if they plan on getting the Eze deal. The first of those is that they'll have to race to secure his signature before the release clause expires in the middle of August. However, Arsenal value Eze lower than £68m and hope to strike a deal below the threshold - although they reportedly plan on selling one of their attackers before formalising a move for the England international. ‌ That would further delay a move for Eze, edging ever closer to the release clause's expiry date. Adding to the club's problems in such a deal is that Eze's favourite position is at No 10, where Arsenal are already well stocked with captain Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz. That means Eze could be forced to move out wide to the left, a role he can play adequately in, but he would certainly lose the freedom he currently enjoys at Selhurst Park. Arsenal are currently on a pre-season tour of Asia, where they are preparing to face north London rivals Tottenham in Hong Kong on Thursday.
