Scarborough pub issues statement 8 days after mass shooting
Just over a week after three masked men walked into a Scarborough, Ont., pub and opened fire on the crowd inside, the establishment has issued a statement saying the business is co-operating with the police investigation and its "thoughts are with everyone affected."
On March 7, Piper Arms Pub, located near Scarborough Town Centre, was celebrating its opening night when three masked men walked and opened fire indiscriminately. No one was killed, but 12 people were injured. The suspects fled and remain outstanding.
On Saturday, the pub issued a statement to its Instagram account.
"We are heartbroken over what happened at our Scarborough Town Centre location on what was supposed to be a special opening night for our team and the community," the statement reads. "This kind of violence has no place in our community."
Toronto police are investigating the incident. In an email Saturday, a police spokesperson said there is still no update on the suspects or a possible motive.

Local councillor Michael Thompson said earlier this week that he'd heard from constituents that the shooting was related to a tow truck industry turf war. Police and CBC Toronto have not confirmed any connection, and the pub's statement makes no mention of a motive.

A Windsor jury found Nathaniel Veltman guilty in November 2023 of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Three months later, then Superior Court Justice Renee Pomerance ruled his actions amounted to a textbook case of terrorism as defined under Canadian law. He was sentenced on Jan. 24, 2024. Friday's news of the appeal comes on the fourth anniversary (new window) of the killing of Yumnah Afzaal, 15, her parents — Madiha Salman, 44, an engineer, and Salman Afzaal, 46, a physiotherapist — and family matriarch Talat Afzaal, 74, a teacher and artist. The youngest family member, a boy, survived. Veltman drove his pickup truck into the family as they were taking an evening stroll on June 6, 2021. Appeal sought on 3 grounds I appreciate that the community was horrified by this offence and the remaining members of the family were devastated by this offence. I respect that, and I feel very badly for both the family and for the community, Veltman's appeal lawyer, Stephen Whitzman, told CBC News. Mr. Veltman, of course, has a right to exercise his full legal rights, including his right to an appeal, and it's my job as his lawyer to assist him in doing that, and I hope that everyone will understand that those two things can both exist together. The appeal is being sought on three grounds, based on court records obtained by CBC News: The judge erred in admitting the ideological evidence, including Veltman's white supremacist manifesto, titled "A White Awakening," which set out his political and racist views; The judge erred in admitting Veltman's statements to a police officer which were obtained via a "Charter breach," meaning he was not properly warned of his rights; The judge erred in refusing the defence application for a mistrial because of what Veltman's lawyer at the time called "inflammatory language" during the Crown's closing statement, including references to the crime scene and the grievous injuries suffered by the victims. Veltman's trial lasted 12 weeks. The jury heard evidence he was motivated by right-wing extremist and Islamophobic views, and he described himself as a white nationalist. It did not name the individuals, but said it also issued 50 warning notices and seven cease-and-desist letters for promoters operating without authorization. 'Our message to finfluencers is loud and clear. They must act responsibly and only promote financial products where they are authorized to do so or face the consequences,' said Steve Smart, joint executive director of enforcement and market oversight at the FCA. Nine regulators from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Italy, United Arab Emirates and the UK were involved in the crackdown, according to the statement. The FCA has been scrutinizing the surge of interest in finance content on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok in recent years. Last summer, it brought charges against several reality TV stars and influencers for promoting foreign exchange trading. They have pleaded not guilty and a trial is scheduled for 2027. Those requests can take Meta Platforms Inc. as long as six weeks to action, Lucy Castledine, director of consumer investments at the regulator, told the Treasury select committee in April. Meg Hillier, chair of the committee, wrote to the US technology giant on June 2 asking for clarification on the delays, according to a separate statement from the TSC on Friday. 'There was an isolated incident in late 2024 which resulted in a delay in actioning a small number of reports from the FCA,' Meta said in a statement in response to the Treasury. Authorities investigating a new social media post by a New Orleans jail escapee on the run
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Authorities announced Thursday they are investigating another social media post, the second in a week, showing a man who identifies himself as Antoine Massey, a fugitive still on the lam after escaping more than two weeks ago from a New Orleans jail. The latest Instagram post, which appears to have been published Wednesday, shows a man standing in front of a blue car who says he is '#AntoineMassey' and has the same distinctive facial tattoos.
