Dozens injured in UK after driver runs through crowd celebrating Liverpool win
David Kitchen of the North West Ambulance Service said at a press conference that 27 individuals in total were taken to the hospital for their injuries, including two with serious injuries, while 20 others were treated at the scene for minor injuries and didn't require hospitalization.
Police said a 53-year-old white British man has been arrested following the incident, but they asked the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident as extensive investigations are underway to learn more.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Simms of the Merseyside Police said they received reports just after 6 p.m. local time as the parade celebrating the victory was ending that a car collided with multiple pedestrians in the city center. She said specialist officers have been made available for the injured and their families.
Kitchen said four of the injured are children.
Simms said authorities believe the 53-year-old man to be the driver of the vehicle and this to be an isolated incident. She said they're not searching for anyone else in connection with it, and it's not currently being treated as an act of terrorism.
'My thoughts are with all those injured in tonight's horrific incident, their families and friends, and all those affected by the terrible tragedy that has taken place today,' Simms said. 'I want to thank all the emergency services, partner agencies and members of the public who came to the assistance of the injured following this evening's shocking events.'
Liverpool City Council member Liam Robinson said officials are working closely with the police in the investigation and reiterated calls on people not to speculate about the motives behind the incident and allow the police to conduct their inquiry.
'Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times,' Robinson said. 'I've no doubt that will again be the case over the coming days and weeks.'
The BBC reported that eyewitnesses said the car hit a group of people before speeding up and then stopping. A BBC reporter said a group of men were running after the car trying to bang on the side of it.
Another witness told the outlet the driver was beeping as he went through the crowd.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the scene 'appalling' in a post on X and said his thoughts are with all who were injured or affected.
'I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident,' he said. 'I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.'

A knifeman threatened to stab a parent outside a primary school as children were being picked up. Cardell Hamman, 20, approached the dad as he collected his child outside the north Manchester school in January. Without warning, Hamman brandished a knife and shouted: "You want to f*** with my sister?" He then moved towards the man, swinging the knife at his body. As the defendant entered the school playground he appeared to secret the knife about his body. "He left as the victim neared the door to the building. As he left the defendant shouted, 'You want to f*** with my sister. Watch, I'm gonna stab you up'." Others also heard Hamman shout words to the effect of 'you're a dead man'. The victim recognised Hamman, but 'as far he was aware there was no ill feelings between them', Ms Gaskell added. In a statement the victim said: ''This incident has shocked me and makes me worried and concerned for my family's safety. So many thoughts are going through my head about what might happen in the future or what could have happened. 'I want to be strong for my family, and my opinion is that I don't want to show my emotions to them or anyone else because as a father I have to be strong for them and show them that their dad isn't scared of anything. 'As time goes by I might begin to feel differently but for now my thoughts rest with what could have happened if I hadn't managed to get away and what if something else like this happens in the future.' He added: 'I have no idea why Cardell would target me, as far as I'm concerned, until today I had no problem with him.' Hamman was arrested after CCTV footage led police to his home in Droylsden. He told officers he had taken an overdose the day before and was taken to hospital. He was examined and released as being fit to be interviewed. Hamman denied the offences. He accepted he knew the victim as the man's child knew his sister, but said there were 'no ill feelings' between them. He later pleaded guilty to attempted wounding with intent; and possession of a bladed article. It is only his good fortune, and obviously that of the victim, that there was no injury.' Mr Rishton said the defendant, who had previous convictions for carrying a knife, had since become a father which had provided him with a 'new perspective'. Jailing him for three-and-a-half years, Judge Alan Conrad KC said: 'Your victim had done nothing to deserve this. I accept you had a very difficult start in life. You are a young man who tends to go out with a knife and finds it difficult to control yourself.' Hamman, of Moss bank Avenue, was banned from contacting the victim, under the terms of a restraining order, indefinitely.

Pervert downloaded hours of vile footage of young children being sexually abused
A man who more than 4,000 images of baby and toddler sexual abuse on his mobile phone has been jailed. Ryan Lee Rowland Smith's vile and disturbing collection included 13.5 hours of video time, eight hours of which were category A, the worst grade of footage. Specialist police officers branded the harrowing footage as some of the most disturbing they had ever been forced to witness. The 23-year-old, of Sorrel Close, Stockton, was convicted of nine offences, including three counts of distributing indecent images of children, three counts of making indecent images of children, possessing a paedophile manual and possessing extreme pornography - including bestiality, possessing prohibited images of a child. He was sentenced to four years in prison plus four years on extended licence when he appeared at Teesside Crown Court. 'When our team arrested Smith in October 2024 it was 6.30am and he had already been on his device accessing vile content. Since then, officers from the team have gone above and beyond to gather evidence against Smith. "At times it was extremely difficult for the team, as they had to view everything which Smith accessed; the tenacity and expertise of the team as a whole secured the convictions against Smith. 'Smith has shown no shame or remorse for the crimes he has committed, even answering 'no comment' when interviewed, for this, he deserves to spend a long time behind bars where he cannot cause further harm.' Pub owner denies breaching enforcement notice in dispute over green tiles
A pub owner has denied breaching an enforcement notice after historic green tiles were ripped off a pub. Charlie Southall, owner of the Montreal Arms in Albion Hill, Brighton, was ordered to repair or replace the tiles which were taken off by workers in March 2022. Brighton and Hove City Council issued an enforcement notice following the incident, requiring the tiles to be replaced by July 2024. Southall first appeared in court over the saga last month. Today, August 18, he has pleaded not guilty to being in breach of an enforcement notice issued by the council. Southall also requested that the case be transferred to crown court due to "complex legal and factual issues". Southall stated that the dispute rather involved the "reinstatement of the tiles". The magistrates ruled that the case would be sent to crown court. Southall is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on September 15.
