Dozens injured after car strikes crowd during Liverpool FC celebration

A man has been detained after a vehicle struck dozens of people on Water Street celebrating Liverpool FC's Premier League title on Monday, authorities said. Merseyside Police's Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said in a press conference on Monday night a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested in relation with the incident, which is "not being treated as terrorism". At least 27 people were taken to the hospital, David Kitchen of the North West Ambulance Service explained, after stating that everyone was "horrified and saddened" by the incident. Another 20 people were treated on site for light injuries, with an unknown of others reporting to the city's hospitals, he added. Four children were among the injured. Four people — three adults and a child — had to be rescued from under the vehicle, according to Chief Fire Officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Nick Searle. The authorities again asked people not to speculate further on the circumstances and refrain from sharing the footage of the incident on social media. Earlier on Monday, emergency services had put up tents and a nearby restaurant was used as an emergency medical centre, domestic media reported. In a post on social media platform X, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected." Starmer also thanked the emergency services for their "swift and ongoing response." UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the scenes from Liverpool were "truly shocking and horrendous". "Thinking of all those affected at this very difficult time. The police are investigating and I'm being kept updated on developments," she added. Liverpool FC, England's most successful football club, held an open-top bus parade through the city to celebrate its 20th Premier League triumph, with hundreds of thousands of fans lining the streets of the 10-mile route to see the team. The club did not get a bus parade after winning the title in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to Monday, Liverpool FC's last public celebration of a top-flight victory was in 1990, in pre-Premier League times. 'We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening," the club said in a statement on Monday evening. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident." 'We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident," Liverpool FC concluded. Everton FC, the other English top-tier team from the city, offered their condolences, saying, "Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this serious incident in our city."

Suspect in Liverpool car ramming held on suspicion of attempted murder

A man held for driving into Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their club's Premier League win on Monday is being held on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving after taking drugs, police in the northwest England city said Tuesday. Eleven people remained hospitalized in stable condition a day after more than 50 were injured in the incident. Police said very quickly after the incident on Liverpool's crowed Water Street that they had arrested a White 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area. He had been driving the minivan that followed an ambulance through a lifted downtown road-block and then plowed into the crowd, Merseyside police said. The police said the man was able to follow the ambulance through the roadblock as it raced to respond to a report of someone having a suspected heart attack. They said there had been no intelligence to warn of the incident, and that it was not being treated as suspected terrorism. The police stressed that the investigation remained ongoing, and they asked the public to not share distressing images online or spread misinformation. The suspect has not been identified by the police. He remained in custody on Tuesday, pending any formal charges being filed. Police were called to the scene in central Liverpool, more than 200 miles northwest of London, at about 1 p.m. ET (6 p.m. local time) on Monday following reports of a car colliding with "a number of pedestrians," the Merseyside Police initially said on social media. David Kitchen of the North West Ambulance Service said Monday that 27 patients were taken to the hospital in total, including four children. Three of the victims were treated for serious injuries, Kitchen said. First responders rescued three adults and a child who were found trapped under a vehicle, according to Merseyside Fire Chief Nick Searle. Tens of thousands of fans had gathered for the Monday afternoon parade, lining the streets to watch Liverpool's players display the Premier League trophy as they were driven slowly past on an open-top bus, The Associated Press reported. Liverpool's last league title came in 2020, but pandemic restrictions prevented a celebration at the time. Dozens injured in UK after driver runs through crowd celebrating Liverpool win

Dozens of people were injured after a car drove through a crowd in England celebrating the Liverpool Football Club's Premier League title. David Kitchen of the North West Ambulance Service said at a press conference that 27 individuals in total were taken to the hospital for their injuries, including two with serious injuries, while 20 others were treated at the scene for minor injuries and didn't require hospitalization. Police said a 53-year-old white British man has been arrested following the incident, but they asked the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident as extensive investigations are underway to learn more. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Simms of the Merseyside Police said they received reports just after 6 p.m. local time as the parade celebrating the victory was ending that a car collided with multiple pedestrians in the city center. She said specialist officers have been made available for the injured and their families. Kitchen said four of the injured are children. Simms said authorities believe the 53-year-old man to be the driver of the vehicle and this to be an isolated incident. She said they're not searching for anyone else in connection with it, and it's not currently being treated as an act of terrorism. 'My thoughts are with all those injured in tonight's horrific incident, their families and friends, and all those affected by the terrible tragedy that has taken place today,' Simms said. 'I want to thank all the emergency services, partner agencies and members of the public who came to the assistance of the injured following this evening's shocking events.' Liverpool City Council member Liam Robinson said officials are working closely with the police in the investigation and reiterated calls on people not to speculate about the motives behind the incident and allow the police to conduct their inquiry. 'Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times,' Robinson said. 'I've no doubt that will again be the case over the coming days and weeks.' The BBC reported that eyewitnesses said the car hit a group of people before speeding up and then stopping. A BBC reporter said a group of men were running after the car trying to bang on the side of it. Another witness told the outlet the driver was beeping as he went through the crowd. United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the scene 'appalling' in a post on X and said his thoughts are with all who were injured or affected. 'I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident,' he said. 'I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Joyous Liverpool FC Victory Parade Ends With Tragedy After 27 Injured In Vehicular Incident

It was meant to be a joyous day in Liverpool. Hundreds of thousans of Liverpool FC faithful from near and far crammed in along the 10 mile parade route to cheer on the Premier League champions a day after officially being handed the trophy. While the club won their first Premier League title, and 19th top flight title, back in 2020, fans were not able to celebrate properly due to COVID 19 restrictions. A year later the club did get their big parade after winning the Champions League, but it was still something special to have the supporters back to celebrate the club's top flight title in their first season under Arne Slot. The party along the parade route went on for hours as supporters braved the soggy weather, lining up as early as 6am to get a choice spot. The celebration quickly turned to a tragedy as a vehicle sped into a crowd of pedestrians on Water Street shortly after the team bus went past. First responders were on site quickly, and an unidentified 53 year old British white male was arrested. Emergency services cordoned off Water Street to and air ambulances were called in as the roads were still clogged with people. A joint press conference was held with leaders of the different emergency service branches and local authorities. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Simms of the Merseyside Police, David Kitchen of the North West Ambulance Service, and Chief Fire Offices Nick Searle addressed the press. Jenny Simms said that they believe the man arrested was the driver of the car, and that this was an isolated incident. No additional detail was provided about the individual or motive. David Kitchen stated that 27 people were taken to hospital for their injuries, including four children. Two of those transported to the hospital are listed in serious condition. Many others were treated on site for minor injuries, and several other people have gone to the hospital themselves to be treated. Nick Sear added that fire crews were able to quickly free four people who were trapped under the car. While very much a tragedy, the fact that there were no fatalities is an absolute blessing. Due to the close proximity of emergency services on hand for the parade, those injured were able to be seen to quickly. Our hearts go out to all affected by this incident.
