News24 motoring podcast ‘Driving with J9' steers enthusiasts in the right direction
Hosted by News24's Motoring editor, Janine van der Post, the podcast sees a variety of motoring experts and enthusiasts exchange ideas and answers to the burning questions that float around the buyers' market.
Van der Post says the creation of this all-things-motor-focused podcast was rooted in a desire to create added value to News24's motoring community and readership, while attracting new audiences looking for the answers they tackle in each episode.
I also wanted to create authentic content by inviting guests one would usually think of to keep our readers informed and entertained,
Janine van der Post, News24 Motoring Editor
With more than two decades clocked in the motoring industry, Van der Post has witnessed the local landscape's evolution and appreciates how there's a chance to learn something new each day.
'That's the biggest driver here (on the podcast), and I want to share that experience with our readers,' she explains.
The podcast, which is an offshoot and revival of News24's 'Driving with J9' article series, covers a broad range of motoring topics. Some of the former episodes have already touched on electric cars in the age of load shedding, the culture of car tunes, as well as buyer secrets the car salesperson won't tell you.
'A recent episode was with a former car salesman, and we had a very candid chat about what potential customers need to know before walking into a dealership,' Van der Post shares.
The kind of information that might not necessarily be a secret, but it's most certainly not well-known. If car buyers can be more informed and empowered, they can make better decisions when making a serious investment,
Janine van der Post, News24 Motoring Editor
As for her favourite episodes, she enjoys it best when the guest brings a unique angle to the conversation around motoring and vehicles. While Van der Post admits she's biased and enjoys all the podcast episodes released so far, she does shout out some memorable and interesting moments behind the mic.
'I've always wanted to create a platform for South Africa's motorsport talents, and having our local MotoGP hero Brad Binder as our first guest to launch the Driving with J9 podcast was just so fulfilling,' she elaborates.
'I am also a massive fangirl and was almost a bit starstruck. But chatting to Brad and realising he's just a lekker South African bloke who is living his dream and is still so humble reminded me why he's such a great ambassador for our country.'
She also enjoyed the episode that featured DJ Ready D and DJ Eazy, a duo she has known for 20 years, as she learnt new information from her longtime friends during that recording session.
'I didn't know half of the things we spoke about in that episode – especially hearing how the iconic Brasse Vannie Kaap group was created by their famous car song,' she adds.

The Jeep Cherokee Is Back—And It's a Hybrid
The Jeep Cherokee took a brief hiatus in 2023 as the automaker prepared its successor. Now, after some much-needed time off, it's back. The all-new 2026 Cherokee is larger than the model it replaces, offering more standard technology and a hybrid powertrain. It arrives as a crucial addition to Jeep's lineup, aiming to make a strong impression in one of the industry's most competitive segments. Launching in the Cherokee is a new 350-volt hybrid powertrain from Stellantis, designed specifically for this crossover. It's also the only powertrain available at launch, but additional options are expected soon. It pairs a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a two-motor electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. It has no plug and a tiny, 1.08-kilowatt-hour battery fed by the engine and by regenerative braking. The system produces 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. Jeep claims the Cherokee will offer over 500 miles of range, can return 37 miles per gallon combined, and will run to 60 miles per hour in 8.3 seconds. The new Cherokee rides on Stellantis's STLA Large platform , measuring 188.1 inches long, 83.6 inches wide (with mirrors), and 67.6 inches tall. It has a 113.0-inch wheelbase, which is approximately six inches longer than the old one. All the changes result in 30 percent more cargo room, according to the automaker. Cherokee's Off-Road Capability 31 Source: Jeep The new Cherokee comes standard with Jeep's Active Drive I 4x4 system, which includes a rear-axle disconnect and four drive modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, and Mud/Sand. It also boasts best-in-class approach and departure angles—19.6 and 29.4 degrees, respectively—along with 8.0 inches of ground clearance and an 18.8-degree breakover angle. Jeep is currently developing a new Cherokee Trailhawk, though details remain under wraps. The previous model featured the Quadra-Drive II full-time 4×4 system, Quadra-Lift air suspension, underbody protection, and a suite of off-road upgrades. Retro-Infused Exterior & A Tech-Packed Cabin The Cherokee arrives wearing an all-new design, but Jeep took care to pay tribute to the original XJ. The crossover has simple styling with a blocky and boxy silhouette. The U-shaped daytime running lights, positioned around the LED headlights, harken back to the XJ's square units. At the rear, the new Cherokee has a sharp D-pillar break around the taillights, drawing styling inspiration from military jerry cans. Jeep keeps things simple on the inside, too. It has a familiar appearance if you've peered inside a Wagoneer S . The dashboard has the same general shape, with a steering squircle, similarly styled vents, and an otherwise luxury-oriented cabin experience. Photo by: Jeep Photo by: Jeep Photo by: Jeep A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment displays are standard in the SUV. It runs Uconnect 5 with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto . A new rotary gear selector frees up space in the center console, one of many areas where Jeep tried to maximize storage. Each new Cherokee has rain-sensing wipers, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear-park assist, and Active Driving Assist, a Level 2 assistance system. Some of the optional upgrades Jeep will offer, depending on the trim, include a 360-degree camera, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, front tire-to-curb view, a dual-pane sunroof, and a foot-activated power liftgate. Photo by: Jeep 2026 Jeep Cherokee Pricing and On-Sale Date The 2026 Jeep Cherokee goes on sale later this year, with the top two trims, Limited and Overland, arriving first. They cost $44,490 and $47,990, respectively (prices include the $1,995 destination charge). The entry-level Cherokee will start at $38,990, which is $200 cheaper than before, while Jeep prices the mid-grade Laredo at $41,990. They will begin arriving at dealers in early 2026. 2026 Jeep Cherokee Specs Comparison: Sizing Up This Plus-Size Compact Hybrid SUV
The old curvy Jeep Cherokee was an undisputed class leader off-road, but compromises required to enable some of that functionality left it feeling big outside and small inside. Happily, the drive to fix that aligned perfectly with the goals of squaring up the Cherokee to make it look more like its more recent brethren and keeping the brand's powertrain options open by moving it to the 'all-of-the-above' STLA Large platform (which supports combustion, hybrid, plug-in, and battery-electric propulsion). How does the new Cherokee stack up in-segment, then? The 2026 Cherokee Is the Longest, Not Quite Widest With its STLA Large platform leaving space for a big in-floor battery, the Cherokee's wheelbase grows by 6.5 inches (5.9 relative to the previous-generation Trailhawk), while the bodywork is lengthened by 6.1 inches and widened by 1.7 inches, but in the name of hybrid efficiency, height comes down 0.5 inch. In each of the following charts, darker blue hues indicate better/larger dimensions while darker red hues indicate smaller/worse, with white indicating mid-pack figures, which hopefully makes the charts easy to digest at a glance. Note that in each chart, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee occupies the first column, with the other compact hybrids listed in order of MotorTrend's Ultimate Car Ranking scores (provided on the first line). That's a lot of bloat for the compact class, and indeed the Cherokee now ranks as the segment's longest, besting the Mazda CX-50 by 2.0 inches. That big Mazda is wider than the new Cherokee by 0.9 inch. The 2026 Jeep Cherokee remains 4.8 inches shorter in length than the average of all the two-row midsize SUVs we rank, and there are way more hybrid competitors in the compact class than there are in midsize, so the rest of our comparisons will be against all-wheel drive compact hybrid SUVs. 2026 Jeep Cherokee: Passenger Space Note that this chart reflects base car dimensions, so fancier models with sunroofs may diminish headroom and passenger space from what you see here. For all the blue in the Jeep's exterior dimensions column, it's good to see a fair amount of blue in the interior column as well. (The Mazda CX-50 stands out as the most inefficiently packaged vehicle with a mostly blue exterior column and mostly red interior one.) Front legroom is a less critical number, because those seats adjust, meaning folks in front can generally make their legs comfortable. The real head scratcher is that pink rear legroom cell. That dimension actually decreased by 1.8 inch in the new Cherokee, from the not-exactly roomy last-gen version's figure. Cherokee is clearly the rear shoulder-room champ, so if you plan to ride long distances with three broad-shouldered teens in back, this 507-mile long-ranger might be a compelling choice (at least if mom and dad don't need their seats slid full rear). Hyundai's Tucson squeaks out a win on rear and overall space, thanks mostly to its big leg room. Squaring up the Jeep's rear styling and stretching the bodywork paid off in 13.6 cubic feet more cargo space with the seats folded (and the hybrid battery packages under the passenger-side rear floor, where it can't affect cargo space). With the rear seats up, there's 30 percent more room that in the last Cherokee, though the 33.6-cubic-foot only bests the Mazda CX-50 and Subaru Forester hybrids. That disappointingly registers in light pink in this class, falling 8.2 cubic feet short of the class leading Honda CR-V Hybrid and 1.5 cubes shy of our class leader, the RAV4 Hybrid. 2026 Jeep Cherokee: Off-Road Clearances As noted, the first Cherokees down the chute will be mainstreamer hybrids. Other powertrains are likely to follow, some with more aggressive all-wheel (or maybe even four-wheel) drive systems worthy of Jeep's vaunted Trail Rated fender badge. But even at this point, the Jeep's column is reassuringly blue for off-road dimensions, registering second best on approach angle (19.6 degrees behind the Kia Sportage's 19.9) and the best departure angle (29.4 degrees, comfortably ahead of the Sportage's 26.6). Note that for this chart, we chose the most off-road-oriented configuration for each vehicle, when one existed. The Cherokee's 8.0-inch ground clearance is pretty well centered between the carlike Ford Escape Hybrid's 6.9-inch and the Outback-aspiring Subaru Forester Hybrid's 8.7-inch clearances, and it likely has more than a little to do with achieving that 37-mpg combined fuel economy rating. 2026 Jeep Cherokee: Powertrain Performance and Efficiency Here we basically have three hybrid strategies at work: Subaru and Mazda have agreements to share Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive planetary combiner (where the engine, a motor-generator, and a traction motor are connected by a single planetary gearset). Ford licensed that same technology and Stellantis is using it now that Toyota has released the patents. It's interesting to note that Jeep is the only one to employ a turbocharged engine with the planetary setup (Toyota's turbo hybrids use conventional automatic transmissions). Also note that manufacturers seldom specify combined peak torque with this setup because it's nearly impossible to do so, so we've inserted estimates. The second is Honda's approach, in which one big traction motor drives the wheels, with the engine bolted to a generator. Then at certain speeds the engine/generator combo also connects directly to the wheels via a clutch and secondary direct-drive ratio. Finally there's the Hyundai/Kia approach (similar to Toyota's turbo and large-engine hybrids) that places a motor inside a six-speed automatic to assist the engine. This performance-oriented setup also uses a turbocharged engine. Just glancing at the colors we clearly see how Hyundai and Kia generally prioritize power and performance over economy. Ford's the exact opposite. Subaru strives for neither, and if its EPA estimates hold up, Jeep manages to grab both the best (tie) city and worst (by 1 mpg) highway ratings in the class. 2026 Jeep Cherokee: Price Comparison It appears that Jeep expects pent-up Cherokee demand will warrant premium pricing, and bear in mind that only the top two trim levels will be offered at launch later this year. That means at first, the least-expensive Cherokee will be the $42,495 Limited, with the $45,995 Overland being the only alternative. The two entry level ones follow in early 2026, with the cheapest, the base model, starting at $36,995, and the mid-level Laredo commanding $39,995. Needless to say, most other mainstream compact SUVs are available for less, including the hybrid versions. Given this segment's competitive landscape, we'd expect either incentives or decontenting to bring those prices down into better alignment with the established players, because Jeep certainly does not (at the moment) enjoy the residual value of Honda or Toyota, which can take a lot of the sting out of a high purchase price.
