Former India captain MS Dhoni celebrated his 44th birthday on Monday (July 7) in his hometown of Ranchi, marking the occasion with close friends and familiar faces. A video of the cake-cutting ceremony quickly went viral on social media, with fans delighting in the sight of the legendary cricketer donning a sleeveless T-shirt and smiling as he shared slices of cake with friends.advertisementA video from the evening - showing Dhoni in a sleeveless T-shirt, smiling as he cut the cake and offered pieces to his companions - quickly lit up social media. For fans across the country, it was a glimpse into a private, heartfelt moment with a man who's rarely one for public spectacle. But true to Dhoni's larger-than-life aura, the birthday celebrations had already started elsewhere. In Vijayawada, fans paid tribute to their icon with a towering cutout - a now-familiar tradition in the South. Huge crowds gathered, waving Chennai Super Kings flags and holding posters, one of which showed Dhoni in a traditional South Indian outfit. It was a reminder of the deep bond he shares with the region, forged through years of loyalty and leadership in yellow since the IPL began in 2008.No big cameras, no perfect angles just a simple raw moment in the gym, when you see that low quality gym video, you know the emotions are real.No PR team, no HD cameras, no staged moment Just Mahi, in his vest and lowers, quietly cutting his cake with his people around. Now 44, Dhoni may have stepped away from international cricket in 2020, but his presence still looms large over the sport. His most recent outing came in the IPL 2025 season for CSK. While Chennai didn't have their best campaign, Dhoni's quiet resolve and enduring leadership remained a rallying point for the team - and a source of hope for millions of fans.Naturally, questions swirl about whether he'll return next year. Speaking after the season, Dhoni said he would give himself "five to six months" to decide - a typically measured response from a man who has always played the game on his own terms. His legacy, though, needs no deliberation. In a career spanning 538 international matches, Dhoni scored 17,266 runs and recorded 829 dismissals - numbers that speak volumes, yet still fall short of capturing his full impact. In ODIs, he scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57, including 10 centuries and 73 fifties. That iconic unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka is still etched in every cricket fan's memory. Even more impressively, he achieved the milestone of 10,000 runs while largely batting in the lower middle order - a role he made his own with unmatched composure.advertisementNo Indian captain has lifted more ICC trophies than Dhoni - the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. In Tests, he led India in 60 matches, winning 27, and played 90 games overall, scoring nearly 5,000 runs, including a majestic 224.He's also the only Indian captain to have whitewashed Australia in a Border-Gavaskar Trophy series - not once, but twice.Yet for all his stats and accolades, it is Dhoni's calm under pressure, humility in victory, and dignity in retirement that make him truly special. On his 44th birthday, fans across the country - from stadiums to social feeds - came together not just to wish him, but to celebrate a cricketer who gave them moments they'll never forget.- EndsMust Watch

MS Dhoni turns 44: Quiet celebration in Ranchi vs loud cheers in Vijayawada by fans

On July 7, MS Dhoni turned 44 with low-key celebrations that emphasized his preference for privacy and family over fanfare. In Ranchi, Jharkhand, he celebrated the day at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) premises—his professional 'home'—while fans in Vijayawada staged a massive tribute. These dual celebrations were a clear indicator of the cricketer's two anchors: the ground where he began and the region that embraced him as Chennai Super Kings captain. Ranchi residence: JSCA grounds celebration Back at the JSCA complex in Ranchi, where Dhoni sharpened his skills as a young cricketer, he gathered with a handful of staff, including president Ajay Nath Shahdeo. Wearing a sleeveless black T-shirt, the former India captain cut a simple cake in the JSCA office, saying, 'Thank you, guys.' The two-time World Cup-winning captain looked relaxed as he handed out slices of cake and shared smiles with old acquaintances. The viral video captured Dhoni's understated approach: no luxury, just the team behind him on his way to captaining India to three ICC titles. Vijayawada fan tribute While Ranchi saw a quiet celebration, fans in Vijayawada lit up the streets. Per reports from Times Now and India Today, crowds gathered a day early on July 6, waving posters of Dhoni. The fans also erected two towering cutouts of the Chennai Super Kings captain, one of which portrayed him in traditional South Indian attire and sunglasses. Even after stepping away from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni's influence remains immense. His presence in the IPL 2025 season, despite not leading CSK from the outset, continues to rally fans—especially after he reassumed captaincy mid-season due to an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Captain Cool's legacy beyond numbers Across formats, Dhoni's record is staggering. He scored 17,266 international runs and effected 829 dismissals over 538 matches. His 10,773 ODI runs came at an average of 50.57, a feat made more impressive by his usual middle-order position. In Tests, he played 90 matches and scored nearly 5,000 runs. As captain, he led India in 332 matches across formats, winning 178. But beyond statistics, it's his unflinching, calm, and measured words that continue to define him, even having trademarked the nickname 'Captain Cool.'

Gill's masterclass in Edgbaston breaks flurry of records, leapfrogs Sachin and Kohli

New Delhi: Shubman Gill's batting masterclass in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy made the India skipper break a flurry of records, overtaking the greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. India beat England by 336 runs to get their first-ever Test match win at Edgbaston, a venue where they had not won a Test before. This win in Birmingham was also India's biggest away Test win in terms of runs and also Gill's maiden as a Test captain. He was super with a bat, hitting 269 and 161 for a total record of 430 runs, the second most runs in a single Test, just 26 behind Graham Gooch (456), which he, coincidentally, hit against India in 1990. His 269 in the first innings at Edgbaston was the highest individual Test score for an Indian batter in England. He also achieved the feat of the highest score by an India captain in Tests, surpassing Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019. He also became the second batter to make two 150-plus scores in a Test, after Allan Border, who scored 150* and 153 against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980. Gill's 269 is also the highest by an Indian batter in Tests outside Asia, leapfrogging Tendulkar's 241 not out at the SCG in 2004 - which was the previous highest. This was also just the second Test double century by an India skipper away from home, with Kohli having achieved the feat against the West Indies in 2016. In the process, he also broke Tendulkar's 21-year-old record of having the highest score by an Indian batter in overseas (barring other Asian countries) conditions. Gill has been in phenomenal form in the first two matches of the series. He has accumulated 585 runs at an average of 146.25 in just four innings so far and is the leading run-getter in the series. With 585 runs, he recorded the highest tally in the first two Tests as captain, bettering Kohli, who scored 449 runs. Moreover, it is the second-highest aggregate in the first two matches of a series, behind Graeme Smith's 621 in England in 2003. He also achieved the feat of scoring the most runs in a captaincy debut series. He is the first Indian and only the fifth batter to be part of four century stands in a Test. The others are: Hanif Mohammad (vs West Indies in 1958), Graham Gooch (vs India in 1990), Mark Taylor (vs Pakistan in 1998) and Joe Root (vs Pakistan in 2016). Gill stitched a 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket and then made a 144-run partnership with Washington Sundar in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test. The Indian captain was also involved in two three-figure stands with Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja in the second innings. Gill is also the second Indian with hundreds in both innings of a Test in England, after Rishabh Pant, who achieved the feat in the series opener at Headingley. The 25-year-old became the third Indian captain with hundreds in both innings of a Test after Gavaskar and Kohli. Gavaskar scored 107 and 182 not out against West Indies at Eden Gardens in 1978 and Kohli scored 115 and 141 against Australia in Adelaide in 2014.
