Andhra Pradesh HC grants bail to YSRCP leader Kakani in illegal mining case

New Indian Express12 hours ago
VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday granted bail to former minister and YSRCP leader Kakani Govardhan Reddy in an alleged illegal mining case filed by Podalakuru police in Nellore district.
The court directed Kakani to furnish two sureties of Rs 2 lakh each, surrender his passport, and cooperate with the investigation.
He must appear before the investigating officer every Sunday, avoid Nellore district until the chargesheet is filed, and attend all hearings without seeking adjournments. The court prohibited Govardhan Reddy from influencing witnesses or discussing the case in the media.
Rejecting the State government's objection, the court said there was no evidence of witness intimidation by Govardhan Reddy, noting that 36 statements had already been recorded.
It was observed that multiple pending cases cannot be treated as criminal history and cited political rivalry in the Sarvepalli constituency as the backdrop to the case.
Any breach of conditions would result in bail cancellation.

Govt nod to 93 additional LCA Mk 1 jets for IAF

THE CABINET Committee on Security Tuesday cleared the procurement of 97 LCA Mk 1 A light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force, sources confirmed to The Indian Express. When inducted, the additional indigenous jets will be a boost to the dwindling fighter squadrons of the IAF. The order was already in the pipeline. Their procurement was cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in 2023. Earlier, the IAF had placed an order for 83 LCA Mk 1 A jets in February 2021. Subsequently, in August 2021, the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited placed an order worth Rs 5,375 crore for 99 F404 engines with GE Aerospace to power the indigenously made Tejas Mk-1A. The first of these jet engines was delivered to HAL after a delay of nearly a year and a half, in April this year. The second engine was delivered last month. The engine deliveries were delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain issues. Twelve Light Combat Aircraft Tejas will be ready to be rolled out by December this year, of which six aircraft have already been lined up, government officials had said. The timely induction of the indigenous fighter jets, including Tejas Mk 1A, is crucial to holding the IAF's dwindling squadron strength. The IAF has phased out most of its MiG-21 squadrons, and early next decade, it is likely to begin phasing out other ageing fighter squadrons. According to officials, HAL plans to produce 16 fighter jets next year provided the engine deliveries from the US are on schedule. The original plans were to produce 16 aircraft every year and complete deliveries of all jets by 2030.

Jabalpur bank robbery: J'khand gang with 15kg gold still untraceable

Jabalpur: The remand of four arrested accused in the sensational Khitola bank robbery case ends on Wednesday, even as police teams hunt for five members of a Jharkhand gang that fled with nearly 15 kg of gold from the bank locker. Six dedicated police teams have been dispatched, including units camping in Jharkhand, to track down the absconding robbers. Raids are being carried out at their suspected hideouts, officials said. The robbery took place on the morning of Aug 11, when three helmet-wearing youths stormed into the Khitola branch of ESAF Small Finance Bank around 8.50 am. Brandishing pistols, they forced the staff to hand over nearly 15 kg of gold ornaments and Rs 5 lakh in cash. Two accomplices waited outside with motorcycles, and the gang escaped within 20 minutes. At the time, only four employees were present in the bank. CCTV footage later revealed that the gang avoided the highway and fled via Majholi road. Police investigations have revealed that the plan was hatched inside Raigarh jail in Chhattisgarh, where Raees Singh Lodhi of Patan, arrested earlier in a narcotics case, came into contact with members of the Jharkhand gang. The heist was masterminded there, sources said. Raees, after getting bail, provided crucial logistical support. He roped in local youths, including Sonu Verman, who arranged a rented house for the gang in Indrana and helped them with reconnaissance of the bank and escape routes. Another accomplice, Hemraj, financed a new motorcycle in his name that was used in the crime. After the robbery, the five Jharkhand gang members regrouped at their Indrana hideout before Raees and Hemraj escorted them safely to Damoh. There, another associate, Vikas Chakravarty, arranged meals for the robbers at a roadside eatery and later booked train tickets on the Kolkata Express to help them escape to Jharkhand. Police have so far arrested three local youths and one from Damoh, but the main gang members remain at large. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
