No. 5 seed Michigan survives first-round scare from UC San Diego for 68-65 win in NCAA Tournament

Chicago Tribune21-03-2025
DENVER — No. 5 seed Michigan proved a bit too much for No. 12 UC San Diego on Thursday night, overcoming Tyler McGhie's 25 points to escape with a 68-65 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
McGhie's 3-point attempt at the buzzer with 7-footer Danny Wolf in his face hit the back iron, and the Wolverines and their fans finally exhaled.
Michigan advanced to face fourth-seeded Texas A&M in the South Region. The Aggies turned away Yale 80-71 at Ball Arena earlier in the evening.
McGhie's bucket with 2 minutes, 29 seconds left gave the 12th-seeded Tritons their only lead at 65-63. Tre Donaldson, who was on the Auburn team that was upset by Yale in last year's NCAA Tournament, responded with a 3-pointer to restore Michigan's lead.
Michigan center Vladislav Goldin, who picked up his fourth foul at the 8:25 mark, grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 19.3 seconds left. He sank both for the final margin and finished with 14 points.
The Tritons (30-5), who moved up from Division II in 2020, won the Big West regular-season and tournament titles and earned the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament bid in their first season of Division I eligibility.
The Tritons brought the nation's longest winning streak into March Madness, having won 15 straight since their last loss on Jan. 18.
But the Big Dance, the big stage, the bright lights — not to mention coach Dusty May's talented Wolverines (26-9), who made an unlikely run to the Big 10 Tournament title, looked like they would be too much for the Tritons.
UC San Diego settled in, however, after a slow start and put a scare into Michigan.
The Tritons didn't score for more than five minutes to start the game — they didn't even get a shot off for more than two minutes. Michigan reeled off the first 10 points before McGhie drove to the hoop and scored UC San Diego's first basket at the 14:55 mark.
Goldin's three-point play with 1.8 seconds left sent Michigan into halftime with a 41-27 lead, and he opened the second half with a free throw for a 15-point cushion.
He picked up his fourth foul at the 8:25 mark and wouldn't score again until the final seconds.
The NCAA required UC San Diego to wait five years to be eligible for March Madness following its move to Division I. Coach Eric Olen built the team with help from the transfer portal by bringing in three D-II stars — guards Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones, McGhie and Hayden Gray.
Tait-Jones averaged 19.5 points but was held to seven by Michigan.
Remember him?
Two years ago, Goldin was a key player on FAU's Final Four team. When Michigan fired coach Juwan Howard and hired May away from FAU a year ago, the new coach brought his old center with him to Ann Arbor.
Together, they orchestrated the Wolverines' turnaround from an 8-24 campaign in Howard's final season to finish second in the Big Ten before dispatching Purdue, Maryland and Wisconsin in the conference tournament.
Missed call
Will Tschetter's 3-pointer that made it 59-49 shouldn't have counted because he was out of bounds when he caught the pass. The officials missed it.

Lions injury updates: Terrion Arnold still battling hamstring, could return next week

Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold will not take part in joint practices against the Miami Dolphins this week as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, but the team is not yet worried about his availability for the season opener. Arnold has not practiced since he pulled a hamstring in the Lions' intrasquad scrimmage July 29. Lions coach Dan Campbell said before practice Wednesday he is "shooting for next week" in Arnold's return. Initially, the Lions hoped Arnold would return last week. The Lions open the regular season Sept. 7 against the Green Bay Packers. "He's getting better," Campbell said. "He's doing more every day, but I don't see him being able to go through these practices." Arnold started 15 games and had 10 pass deflections for the Lions last season and is expected to play a key role this fall in a secondary that already has suffered injury losses this summer. Vaki, Hassanein return Second-year cornerback Ennis Rakestraw will miss the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, backup Khalil Dorsey remains on the physically unable to perform list as he returns from a broken leg and safeties Dan Jackson is on injured reserve and out for the year. Campbell said rookie defensive end Ahmed Hassanein will take part in practice after leaving early Monday to be evaluated for a leg injury. "It was just a little bit of a scare," Campbell said. And running back Sione Vaki is expected back for position drills and some team drills after missing most of training camp with a hamstring injury. "When you can't practice it's always a setback, especially when he's only had very days to where he was in," Campbell said. "But it is what it is and that's behind you and you got to call this Day 1, what are you going to do about it? So it's just good to get him back on the grass." How many five-star recruits will LSU football sign in its 2026 class?

LSU football is aiming to sign the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in 2026. LSU already has two consensus five-star commits, but LSU will need a couple more to win the recruiting title. In 2025, LSU signed two recruits ranked as five-stars in the Rivals Industry Rankings. But LSU left talent on the table. Five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood and five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore were both LSU commits at one point before flipping to Michigan and Oregon, respectively. LSU is looking for a stronger finish to the recruiting cycle in 2026. So, just how many five-stars will LSU sign in 2026? Let's start with the two five-stars already committed. Wide receiver Tristen Keys and defensive tackle Lamar Brown currently headline the LSU class. Per the Rivals Industry Rankings, Keys is the No. 7-ranked player in the class and No. 1 at his position. Brown sits No. 2 overall in the Industry Rankings, but ESPN slots the Louisiana product as the No. 1 player in the country. For LSU to gain another five-star, the Tigers don't have to add a new commitment. There's a good chance that at least one of LSU's current commits gets a bump. Defenders Richard Anderson and Trenton Henderson are the obvious candidates. Henderson ranks No. 36 in the Rivals Industry Rankings and already has a fifth-star from 247Sports. With a big senior year, Henderson could enter the consensus five-star status. The same could be said for Anderson, who has flirted with five-star status throughout his recruitment. Expect at least one of those players to earn star No. 5 by signing day. Then we have the players LSU still wants to add. The top uncommitted recruit left on LSU's board is five-star offensive lineman Darius Gray. The Tigers have gone back and forth with South Carolina for Gray's services, but South Carolina is trending. LSU is right there, though. Gray is the No. 1-ranked interior offensive lineman in the Rivals Industry Rankings. At quarterback, LSU is still pushing for Texas commit Dia Bell. Bell is the No. 1-ranked QB in the country and would be a massive addition to LSU's class, but the Tigers' chances of a flip are slim. Still, don't count LSU out. Verdict: How many five-star recruits will LSU football sign in 2026? I think LSU holds on to Keys and Brown, and both players retain five-star status throughout the recruitment process. The most likely scenario is LSU finishing with three five-stars. Whether it's a commitment from Gray or Henderson getting a rankings bump.
