Belarus opposition leader released early after five years
Sergei Tikhanovsky was detained in May 2020 after announcing a plan to run against the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko in the election that year. For five years, largely spent in exile, Tikhanovskaya became the face of the country's opposition while her husband sat in prison.
On Saturday he was released unexpectedly and husband and wife were reunited.
Tikhanovskaya shared a video on social media of her hugging her husband joyfully as onlookers clapped. She described it as a victory for Belarusian political prisoners and urged the international community to maintain pressure on Lukashenko's government to release more than 1,100 remaining political detainees.

Putin discusses Trump summit with Belarus and Kazakhstan
MOSCOW, Aug 17 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin spoke to the leaders of Belarus and Kazakhstan on Sunday to update them on the summit with U.S. President Donald Trump which the Kremlin has cast as a potentially significant stepping stone towards peace in Ukraine. After his meeting with Trump in Alaska, the first U.S.-Russian summit in more than four years, Putin updated his top officials in the Kremlin on Saturday. Putin told Russia's top officials that the visit was timely and "very useful", adding that he and Trump had spoken about a possible end to the Ukraine war "on a fair basis", noting the need to deal with the "root causes" of the crisis. "We have not had direct negotiations of this kind at this level for a long time. I repeat once again: there was an opportunity to calmly and in detail once again set out our position," Putin told Russian officials. "We, of course, respect the position of the American administration, which sees the need for a speedy end to military action. Well, we would also like this and would like to move on to resolving all issues by peaceful means." The press service of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Putin had discussed the talks in Alaska. "Putin informed his Belarusian counterpart in detail about the results of the last Russia-US summit," the Lukashenko's press service said. Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's press service said that Russia-U.S. talks "contributed to a better understanding of the American side of the Russian position on Ukraine."

Russia says it prevented Ukrainian drone attack on Smolensk nuclear power plant
MOSCOW, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said that it had prevented a Ukrainian drone attack on the Smolensk nuclear power plant in western Russia on Sunday. The Soviet-era Smolensk nuclear power station, about 330 km (200 miles) southwest of Moscow near the border with Belarus, has three RBMK reactors - the same basic design as the reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. The FSB, the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said that Russian radio-electronic warfare systems intercepted a Ukrainian drone over the territory of the Smolensk nuclear power station. "Electronic warfare forces intercepted an aircraft-type UAV - a Ukrainian-made 'Spis' attack UAV - over the territory of the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant," the FSB said in a statement. "The Ukrainian armed forces continue provocations in the form of an attempted attack by unmanned aerial vehicles on Russian nuclear energy facilities." The Smolensk nuclear power station said it was operating as normal. There was no reported damage to any of the reactors or key operating infrastructure. Russian state news agency RIA Novosti published pictures which showed what it said were parts of the drone. Russia's defence ministry said the Ukrainian drone had been heading towards the Smolensk nuclear power station, Interfax reported. Reuters was unable to immediately verify battlefield reports from either side. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine on the Russian reports.
