Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel appears to not want to talk about potential Ramsey trade

Miami Herald5 days ago

The Jalen Ramsey-Miami Dolphins debacle has almost reached its conclusion.
June 1 serves as Ramsey's proverbial freedom day as the Dolphins will finally be able to trade the All-Pro cornerback without taking a $8 million cap hit. A post-June 1 deal, however, would open up about $10 million in cap space.
And as the deadline approaches, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel appears less and less willing to talk about it.
'I'm interested in the players that I'm coaching on the field today,' McDaniel said Wednesday, adding that 'zero has changed since the last time I said anything about' him. 'It's irresponsible [not] to focus on the players working now and concern myself with that.'
This comes roughly 24 hours after Ramsey tweeted '5...,' seemingly calling attention to the number of days until he can be traded.
The Dolphins-Ramsey saga dates back to mid-April when news broke that both sides mutually agreed to trade the star cornerback. It's unclear what led to the decision, however, general manager Chris Grier made it known that Ramsey didn't ask for a trade or more money.
'It's never easy to replace a player like Jalen,' Grier said April 15. 'He was a good player for us. He's a good player, he'll probably be a Hall of Famer, but for the Miami Dolphins going forward, we feel like this is the best chance to help us win not only just this year, but in the future as well.'
When asked about their relationship following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, McDaniel somewhat avoided the question.
'I think speaking on the relationship with Jalen on this forum kind of undercuts what I think is important today which is we've added a class and are continuing to add new players to the 2025 Dolphins,' McDaniel said April 26. 'And I think beyond that, it wouldn't do justice to these draft picks and what we're trying to do today.'
Since then, the Dolphins and Ramsey have been at a stalemate of sorts. Sure, teams like the Los Angeles Rams, a team which the seven-time Pro Bowler helped lead to Super Bowl 56, have indicated interest but nothing has yet to materialize.
'I've had discussions with Miami,' Rams general manager Les Snead said April 22, later adding that 'there are a lot of nuances to that situation based on all the things that come with a trade, contracts and things like that. I'm not sure where they're at in the process.'
Rams coach Sean McVay appeared excited when Adam Schein of SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio asked about the possibility of a Ramsey reunion.
'He is a total stud, and you look at, obviously he has continued to play at a really high level,' McVay said, according to Rams Wire. The veteran coach added that the team will never 'shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail.'
With Ramsey likely soon out the door, the question then becomes who will be his replacement. The Dolphins previously let go veteran cornerback Kendall Fuller in January and signed Artie Burns, Kendall Sheffield Jr. and Ryan Cooper Jr. in addition to their selection of Jason Marshall Jr. in the 2025 NFL Draft. Outside of Kader Kohou, who primarily plays in the nickel, the cornerback room lacks recent full-time starter experience as players such as Cam Smith, Stom Duck, Ethan Bonner, Ethan Robinson and BJ Adams round it out.

With Dolphins tight end Smith's future in limbo, agent Drew Rosenhaus addresses the matter

Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith wants a new contract and has been the subject of trade talks with Pittsburgh. While agent Drew Rosenhaus did not specifically address those issues in his weekly TV segment late Sunday night, he made clear that Smith wants to remain a Dolphin. 'Here's what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami,' Rosenhaus said on WSVN-7. 'That's his first choice. This is where he lives in the off-season. He had a record-breaking season last year. 'It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphin tight end... He broke the team record for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns for a tight end and was the team's single Pro Bowl player. He's an incredibly valuable part of this team... He went to college at FIU. His dream team is the Dolphins. 'Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami.' The Dolphins spoke to the Steelers after Smith conveyed that he wants a new contract, replacing the one that's due to pay him $4.8 million this season in the final year of a two-year deal. Smith, 29, caught 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns last season, his first with the Dolphins. Miami has been seeking a trade partner instead of agreeing to Smith's request for a new contract, ESPN reported. If the Dolphins trade Smith and do not get a tight end in return, their tight end room would feature only journeyman Pharoah Brown, Julian Hill, Tanner Conner and undrafted rookie Jalin Conyers. Veteran free agent tight ends still available include, among others, Jordan Akins (40 catches for 390 yards for Cleveland last season) and Hayden Hurst (8 for 73 for the Chargers). Here's a list of the limited number of free agents left at the position. The Athletic reported that the Raiders are open to trading tight end Michael Mayer, whose playing time diminished last year after Las Vegas drafted Brock Bowers, who had the best season for a rookie tight end in NFL history. 'I think Mike's been fantastic since I've been here; we didn't make any decisions on anything until you see him here, and Mike's been fantastic since day one of the offseason program,' Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly said Thursday. If the Dolphins trade Smith for a future draft pick, his Dolphins 2025 cap hit would drop from $4.6 million to $550,000. While Smith ideally would like to remain in Miami, cornerback Jalen Ramsey wants out, with a trade expected in the coming weeks. If Ramsey traded for a future draft pick, his 2025 Dolphins cap hit would drop from $16.7 million to $6.7 million. A trade before June 2 would have resulted in a $25 million Dolphins cap hit for 2025. Miami would have $28 million in cap space if it trades both Ramsey and Smith for future draft picks.

The captain led the Knicks to the conference finals for the first time in 25 years, averaging 29.4 points and seven assists in the playoffs. Karl-Anthony Towns Stats: 24.4 PPG, 12.8 RPG, 3.1 APG Contract Status: 2025-26: $53.1M; 2026-27: $57M; 2027-28: Player option for $61M. Advertisement Skinny: Overall, his first season as a Knick was strong. Towns was an All-Star and an All-NBA third-team selection, adding a new offensive dimension to the team. The postseason showcased his defensive flaws, particularly against the ball-moving, up-tempo Pacers. 6 Karl-Anthony Towns dribbles during the Knicks' Game 6 loss to the Pacers on May 31. Charles Wenzelberg OG Anunoby Stats: 18.0 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 2.2 APG Advertisement Contract Status: 2025-26: $39.5M; 2026-27: $42.5M; 2027-28: $45.4M; 2028-29: Player option for $48.3M 6 OG Anunoby attempts a shot during the Knicks' Game 6 loss to the Pacers on May 31. Charles Wenzelberg Skinny: His defense on Pistons star Cade Cunningham was key in the first-round series victory, and he played a major role in ousting the defending champion Celtics in the second round. The two-way wing also notched a personal best in scoring during the regular season, although his shooting dipped in the playoffs. Mikal Bridges Stats: 17.6 PPG, 3.7 APG, 3.2 RPG Advertisement Contract status: 2025-26: $24.9M. 6 Mikal Bridges delivered with his defense during the Knicks' series against the Celtics. Charles Wenzelberg Skinny: His postseason was similar to his first regular season with the Knicks: Uneven. There were bright spots — like the two clutch stops in the first two games against the Celtics in the second round — but also too many instances when he didn't make enough of an impact. Josh Hart Stats: 13.6 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 5.9 APG Contract Status: 2025-26: $19.4M; 2026-27: $20.9M; 2027-28: Team option for $22.3M. Follow The Post's coverage of the Knicks in the 2025 NBA Playoffs Sports+ subscribers: Sign up for Inside the Knicks to get daily newsletter coverage and join Expert Take for insider texts about the series. Skinny: A shaky series against the Pacers shouldn't diminish his year. The gutty Hart set career highs in rebounds, assists, steals and minutes, and was instrumental in the series upset of the Celtics, averaging 14.5 rebounds, 8.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Miles McBride Stats: 9.5 PPG, 2.9 APG, 2.5 RPG Advertisement Contract status: 2025-26: $4.3M; 2026-27: $3.9M Skinny: He found his shot in the playoffs and led the Knicks in NET rating at plus-4.3. Owed just over $8M the next two years, McBride is a bargain. Mitchell Robinson Stats: 5.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.1 BPG Advertisement Contract status: 2025-26: $12.9M Skinny: A difference-maker in the playoffs after appearing in only 17 regular-season games following ankle surgery, Robinson was a key piece in the postseason. His 17.2 playoff offensive rebounding percentage was tops among players in the league who saw rotation minutes. Cam Payne Stats: 6.9 PPG, 2.8 APG, 1.4 RPG Contract status: Unrestricted free agent Advertisement 6 Cam Payne eventually lost his spot in the rotation during the Knicks' series against the Pacers. Charles Wenzelberg Skinny: The veteran guard was a playoff disappointment other than his impactful opener against the Pistons. He eventually lost his spot in the rotation to Delon Wright in the Pacers series, and was mostly underwhelming during the regular season. Landry Shamet Stats: 5.7 PPG, 1.2 RPG, 0.5 APG Contract status: Unrestricted free agent Advertisement Skinny: Benched for most of the postseason, Shamet made an impact when given a chance against the Pacers. Was a capable bench piece during the regular season. Delon Wright Stats: 4.3 PPG, 2.1 APG, 1.4 RPG Contract status: Unrestricted free agent 6 Delon Wright capitalized on his Knicks chance after earning a rotation spot late in the postseason. Charles Wenzelberg Skinny: Picked up in the Jericho Sims trade in February, Wright was a nonfactor until the Pacers series, when he was given a chance to contribute. He answered the call, giving the Knicks quality minutes behind Brunson. Precious Achiuwa Stats: 6.6 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.0 APG Contract status: Unrestricted free agent 6 Precious Achiuwa defends during Game 3 of the Knicks' series against the Celtics on May 10. Charles Wenzelberg Skinny: Well-liked and versatile reserve who had a role during large parts of the 51-win regular season, but fell out of the rotation in the playoffs. Could look elsewhere for a bigger opportunity. Tyler Kolek Stats: 2.0 PPG, 1.7 APG, 0.7 RPG Contract status: 2025-26: $2.1M; 2026-27: 2.2M; 2027-28: Team option for $2.4M Skinny: Second-round pick out of Marquette mostly watched and learned as a rookie. Uncertain if the Knicks believe he's ready to serve as Brunson's backup next season. Kevin McCullar Jr. Contract status: Restricted free agent. Skinny: Didn't make his G-League debut until Jan. 31 due to knee surgery, and the second-round pick appeared in just four games with the Knicks. Ariel Hukporti Stats: 1.9 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 0.6 BPG Contract status: 2025-26: Team option for $1.9M. Skinny: The athletic big man has shown glimpses of potential when given a chance. Pacome Dadiet Contract status: 2025-26: $2.8M; 2026-27: Team option for $2.9M; 2027-28: Team option for $5.3M. Skinny: First-round pick from France put up quality numbers in the G-League (14.9 points, 5.4 rebounds) during a rookie season that didn't include much action with the Knicks. P.J. Tucker Stats: 3.0 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 0.3 BPG Contract status: 2025-26: Team option for $3.4M. Skinny: Teammates credited the 40-year-old Tucker, signed in March, for his leadership and knowledge he shared during the playoff run to the conference finals.

UC Irvine showcases its power, eliminating Arizona State in NCAA baseball tournament

Under threat of elimination, UC Irvine's bats emerged once again. Bringing the power for a second straight game, the Anteaters connected for five home runs Sunday, eliminating Arizona State 11-6 in the Los Angeles Regional of the NCAA baseball tournament. Needing to win four straight games to advance to the super regionals after losing to Arizona State on Friday, UC Irvine is halfway to its goal. Alonso Reyes — who had just one home run in 2025 entering Sunday's game — ripped a two-run home run off of Sun Devils starter Derek Schaefer in the fourth inning. Later in the inning, after Arizona State coach Willie Bloomquist went with Lucas Kelly out of the bullpen, Chase Call cleared the batter's eye in dead center field for a two-run home run to give the Anteaters a 6-1 lead. UC Irvine took a 7-2 lead in the sixth when Call launched a changeup over the heart of the plate from Sun Devils closer Cole Carlon beyond the left-field wall and into the neighborhood behind Jackie Robinson Stadium. Call's two home runs weren't the only examples of the Anteaters' power at the plate. UC Irvine star center fielder Jacob McCombs connected for a no-doubt home run (423 feet, 106.5 mph) for the second straight day in the third inning, lifting the ball over The Jack and Rhodine Gifford Training Facility in right field. McCombs, an All-Big-West First Team honoree, leaned back in the batter's box after his home run, taking time to admire his go-ahead blast. Even when the Sun Devils threatened — scoring three in the sixth to make it a two-run game — James Castagnola replenished the lead with a two-run home run in the seventh. UC Irvine forced Carlon — who entered the game with a 2.73 earned-run average — from the game. He conceded a season-high five runs (four earned) across 1⅓ innings. Plenty is still up for grabs for the Anteaters, but it will now require more of the same offense — and taking down UCLA twice (once Sunday night and on Monday) to extend their season. Luckily for coach Ben Orloff, he preserved most of his pitching staff thanks to redshirt sophomore left-hander Ryder Brooks' start. The brother of former UCLA Friday night starting pitcher Jake Brooks made himself at home at Jackie Robinson Stadium, tossing 5⅓ innings of five-run ball, giving up six hits, walking four and striking out three with low-slot delivery. It was Brooks' longest start since a complete-game shutout of Hawaii on April 19. Orloff dipped into his bullpen for just two relief pitchers. Ricky Ojeda, the Big West Pitcher of the Year, tossed 1 ⅓ innings on 34 pitches. Over the last three days, Ojeda has thrown 74 pitches — and would be on just a few hours rest if he pitches Sunday night against UCLA. The Anteaters split their midweek season series against the Bruins earlier this year.
