PM Modi thanks Croatian PM Plenkovic for his gift of Sanskrit grammar book written in Latin

New Delhi, June 19 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked Croatian PM Andrej Plenkovic for his gift of a reprint of the first Sanskrit grammar book written in Latin in 1790 by a Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin, terming it a remarkable symbol of the enduring intellectual and cultural bonds between the two nations.
In a post on X, the PM said:
'Thank you, Prime Minister Plenković. This is indeed a remarkable symbol of the enduring intellectual and cultural bonds between India and Croatia! May these bonds get even stronger in the times to come.'
He was replying to a post by the Croatian PM Plenkovic, who wrote on X:
'I presented to the Indian Prime Minister @PMOIndia @narendramodi a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit Grammar - the first printed Sanskrit grammar, written in Latin in 1790 by Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin (1748–1806), based on the knowledge he gained while living in India from Kerala Brahmins and local manuscripts.
'With this pioneering work, Filip Vezdin became one of the first European scientists to seriously devote himself to Indian languages and culture. At the same time, this is also a symbol of the early cultural ties between Croatia and India.
'As part of the gift exchange, I also presented a book "Croatia & India, Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business" by Croatian diplomat Dr. Siniša Grgić - which provides a unique and comprehensive comparative overview of our two countries and explores all dimensions of bilateral relations.
'This book reflects our achievements, as well as the potential we can still realize, and we believe that it will inspire and encourage the strengthening of our future cooperation and contribute to the further deepening of the mutual friendship between Croatia and India.'
Notably, PM Modi, during his visit to Zagreb yesterday was greeted by the chanting of Sanskrit mantras by a group of Croatians, who were in Indian attire and with sandalwood tilak on their foreheads.
During PM Modi's visit to Croatia yesterday, the two leaders held talks and signed some agreements.

Exchanging high commissioners with India is a basic first step in restoring ties: Canadian PM Carney

Ottawa, June 19 (UNI) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that exchanging high commissioners with India is a 'basic first step' in restoring the diplomatic relationship with New Delhi. Answering a media query on why his government has chosen to reappoint a high commissioner to India following talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Alberta, PM Carney said: 'It's a foundational necessary first step for the relationship, which is to exchange high commissioners, and re-begin effectively diplomatic service, or consular service. 'We have very deep ongoing ties, people to people, not just of Indo-Canadians but of Canadians with India. We don't have a high commissioner in India right now, we are not serving Canadians in India right now, because of where we are. It's reciprocal for the Indian government. 'So having a basic level of engagement is in many respects a duty of the government. I'm glad we came to the agreement understanding. It is also based on several things, the law enforcement cooperation, understanding of issues of transnational repression, which we discussed not just at the G7 but also in the conversation that PM Modi and I had.' To a question on whether the two leaders discussed the issue of the killing of prominent Khalistani and Indo-Canadian Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023 in British Columbia, over which issue the relations between the two nations had soured, PM Carney brushed it off, with: 'Look, I never make it a policy to give a line by line transcript readout of what exactly was said in the meeting, and I'm not about to start now.' On June 6, the Canadian PM called up PM Modi to invite him for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. Later on June 7, explaining his stance, PM Carney had said that India being the fifth largest economy in the world, having the largest population, and being central to very vital supply global value chains, deserves to be at the G7 Summit table, and that he had spoken to PM Modi to invite him. 'India is the fifth largest economy in the world, effectively the most populous country in the world, central to a number of those supply chains, at the heart of those supply chains, and so that (invite) makes sense. 'And in addition, bilaterally, we have now agreed, importantly, to continue law enforcement dialogue, so there's some progress on that which recognises issues of accountability. I extended the invitation to PM Modi in that context and he has accepted.' During their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit earlier this week, the two leaders agreed to reinstate High Commissioners in their respective countries. The two leaders also underscored the importance of 'restarting senior ministerial as well as working-level engagements across various domains to rebuild trust and bring momentum to the relationship'. They also discussed the importance of restarting the stalled trade negotiations. Prime Minister Modi in a post on X, termed their meeting as an excellent one and added that the two prime ministers look forward to working closely to add momentum to the bilateral friendship. 'Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit. 'India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law. 'PM Carney and I look forward to working closely to add momentum to the India-Canada friendship. Areas like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, fertilisers and more offer immense potential in this regard.' UNI RN

NASA Suspends June 22 Launch Of Axiom-4 Space Mission Carrying India's Shubhanshu Shukla

Last Updated: The Axiom-4 mission carrying Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station has seen several delays. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has decided to stand down from the launch of the Axiom-4 space mission, scheduled on June 22 (Sunday), and will target a new launch date in the coming days. The mission was supposed to take four astronauts, including Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, to the International Space Station (ISS) on board SpaceX's Falcon-9 rocket. 'NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX continue reviewing launch opportunities for Axiom Mission 4 to the International Space Station. NASA has made the decision to stand down from a launch on Sunday, June 22, and will target a new launch date in the coming days," NASA said. The agency said it needed additional time to continue evaluating ISS operations after recent repair work in the aft (back) most segment of the orbital laboratory's Zvezda service module. NASA said it wanted to ensure that the station was ready for additional crew members and was reviewing data, in lieu of the space station's interconnected and interdependent systems. . @NASA, @Axiom_Space, and @SpaceX continue reviewing launch opportunities for Axiom Mission 4. The crew remains in quarantine in Florida, and the astronauts stand ready to launch when the station is ready to receive them," it said. The Axiom-4 mission to the ISS will be commanded by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, and Shubhanshu Shukla will serve as the pilot. European Space Agency's Slawosz Uznanski from Poland and Hungary's Tibor Kapu are the mission specialists. The crew will be taken to the space station via SpaceX's Falcon-9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft. Initially planned for May 29, the launch faced several delays due to a detected liquid oxygen leak in the Falcon 9 boosters and problems with the aging Russian module of the International Space Station. It was subsequently rescheduled to June 8, then June 10, then June 11 and ultimately to June 19. The space crew will carry out around 60 experiments during their 14-day stay in space, ranging from life science to technology demonstrations to diabetes research. There have been concerns over repeated delays in the mission, as the launch window is narrowing with every passing day. The ISS, which has been orbiting the Earth for almost 25 years, has a tightly-managed schedule coordinated by NASA. First Published: June 20, 2025, 06:57 IST

Shubhanshu Shuklas ISS Mission Delayed: NASA Awaits New Date

NASA has postponed the planned launch of Axiom Mission 4 to the International Space Station (ISS). The Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla-led mission was rescheduled for June 22 (Sunday). The ISS said on Friday morning that NASA is standing down from a launch on Sunday, and that it will target a new launch date in the coming days. "@NASA, @Axiom_Space, and @SpaceX continue reviewing launch opportunities for Axiom Mission 4. Due to the highly interconnected nature of the orbital laboratory's systems, NASA is reviewing relevant data to ensure readiness for the arrival of additional crew members. Highlighting the global significance of the mission, ISS noted that the agencies "appreciate the historic nature of this mission for the nations of India, Poland, and Hungary, as well as the world." The four-member crew remains in quarantine in Florida and is prepared to launch once the station is cleared to receive them. Axiom Mission 4 will be commanded by Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut and now Axiom Space's Director of Human Spaceflight. Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla from ISRO will serve as the mission's pilot. The mission specialists are ESA project astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft remain in good condition and are stationed at Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Earlier, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that the Axiom-4 space mission -- which includes Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla -- will not launch before June 22, as safety assessments are still underway before clearing the final launch timeline. "We have been told that it won't be before 22nd June. There is a safety angle also involved here," Singh said at a press conference. Following the rescheduling, Axiom Space had said in a statement earlier that NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX were targeting no earlier than Sunday, June 22, for the launch. The change allows NASA time to continue evaluating station operations after recent repairs in the Zvezda service module. In a post on X, Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed the updated launch timeline, writing: "Axiom Mission 04 to the International Space Station (ISS)... After assessing key parameters, including module fitness, crew health, and weather, @Axiom_Space has indicated that June 22, 2025, may be the next likely launch date of Axiom-04 Mission carrying, among others, the Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, to the ISS." He added that further updates would be shared accordingly. On the 11th anniversary of the Modi government, Singh also highlighted the socio-economic impact of administrative reforms over the past decade. "The administrative reforms that happened in the last 11 years were not limited to governance. They had extreme socio-economic ramifications," he said. He emphasized the push toward digital governance aimed at enhancing ease of living for common citizens, and noted that reforms created a more automated system that helped the government achieve key milestones. "During the 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, not only has governance improved but also had significant socio-economic consequences," Singh said. He added that schemes and reforms were aimed at ensuring justice for marginalised groups.
