The OECD slashed its annual global growth forecast on Tuesday, warning that US President Donald Trump 's tariffs blitz will stifle the world economy - hitting the United States especially hard. After 3.3 percent growth last year, the world economy is now expected to expand by a "modest" 2.9 percent in 2025 and 2026, the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. In its previous report in March, the OECD had forecast growth of 3.1 percent for 2025 and 3.0 percent for 2026.Since then, Trump has launched a wave of tariffs that has rattled financial markets."The global outlook is becoming increasingly challenging," said the OECD, an economic policy group of 38 mostly wealthy countries. It said "substantial increases" in trade barriers, tighter financial conditions, weaker business and consumer confidence, and heightened policy uncertainty will all have "marked adverse effects on growth" if they persist. The OECD holds a ministerial meeting in Paris on Tuesday and Wednesday, with US and EU trade negotiators expected to hold talks on the sidelines of the gathering after Trump threatened to hit the European Union with 50-percent tariffs. The Group of Seven advanced economies is also holding a meeting focused on trade."For everyone, including the United States, the best option is that countries sit down and get an agreement," OECD chief economist Alvaro Pereira said in an interview with AFP."Avoiding further trade fragmentation is absolutely key in the next few months and years," Pereira said.Trump imposed in April a baseline tariff of 10 percent on imports from around the world. He unveiled higher tariffs on dozens of countries but has paused them until July to allow time for negotiations. The US president has also imposed 25 percent tariffs on cars and now plans to raise those on steel and aluminium to 50 percent on Wednesday. In the OECD report, Pereira warned that "weakened economic prospects will be felt around the world, with almost no exception".He added that "lower growth and less trade will hit incomes and slow job growth".The outlook is particularly gloomy for the United States. The US economy is now expected to grow by just 1.6 percent this year, down from 2.2 percent in the previous outlook, and slow further to 1.5 percent in 2026, the OECD said."This reflects the substantial increase in the effective tariff rate on imports and retaliation from some trading partners," the OECD said. The effective tariff rate on US merchandise imports has gone from two percent in 2024 to 15.4 percent, the highest since 1938, the OECD said. The OECD also blamed "high economic policy uncertainty, a significant slowdown in net immigration, and a sizeable reduction in the federal workforce".While annual inflation is expected to "moderate" among the Group of 20 economies to 3.6 percent in 2025 and 3.2 percent in 2026, the United States is "an important exception".US inflation is expected to accelerate to just under four percent by the end of the year, two-times higher than the Federal Reserve's target for consumer price increases. The OECD slightly reduced its growth forecast for China -- which was hit with triple-digit tariffs that have been temporarily lowered -- from 4.8 to 4.7 percent this year.Another country with a sizeable downgrade is Japan: the OECD cut the country's growth forecast from 1.1 percent to 0.7 percent. The outlook for the eurozone economy, however, remains intact with one percent growth."There is the risk that protectionism and trade policy uncertainty will increase even further and that additional trade barriers might be introduced," Pereira wrote."According to our simulations, additional tariffs would further reduce global growth prospects and fuel inflation, dampening global growth even more," he said.

US Court Stays Deportation Of Family Of Colorado Attack Suspect

A US judge on Wednesday ordered a temporary stay on any efforts to deport the family of a man suspected of carrying out a Molotov cocktail attack on Jewish protesters at the weekend. The move is the latest in a growing list of confrontations between President Donald Trump's administration and the independent court system. The wife and five children of Mohamed Sabry Soliman were detained by immigration officials as law enforcement probed the fiery assault on a peaceful march in Boulder, Colorado on Sunday. Twelve people were hurt when an assailant lobbed homemade incendiary devices and shouted "Free Palestine," calling those present "killers." Soliman -- who authorities said had entered the United States on a tourist visa and had subsequently applied for asylum -- was arrested at the scene. Trump's administration was quick to pledge to deport his family, who are reportedly from Egypt. On Tuesday the White House appeared to taunt the suspect's family, writing on social media: "Six One-Way Tickets for Mohamed's Wife and Five Kids." "Final Boarding Call Coming Soon." That came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday pledged to rid the US of "terrorists" who were in the United States temporarily on visas. Judge Gordon Gallagher on Wednesday granted a temporary restraining order against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons and the local ICE chief. "Defendants SHALL NOT REMOVE Hayem El Gamal and her five children from the District of Colorado or the United States unless or until this court or the Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit vacates this order," the edict says. The legal ruling is the latest in a long line of stays and restraining orders the courts have issued in response to increasingly aggressive moves by the administration to remove non-citizens, including to foreign prisons. The Trump administration systematically accuses judges who oppose his immigration decisions of usurping his presidential national security powers. Soliman is due to appear in court in Colorado on Thursday. He is expected to formally face federal hate crime charges, as well as state charges of attempted murder.

Trump Orders Probe Into 'Conspiracy' To Hide Biden's 'Mental State'

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday ordered an investigation into what Republicans claim was a "conspiracy" to cover up Joe Biden's declining cognitive health during his time in the White House. The move is the latest in a long-running campaign by Trump to discredit his predecessor, which has been joined by Republican Party politicians and their cheerleaders in the conservative media. But it also comes as a growing chorus of Democrats begin to acknowledge the former president appeared to have been slipping in recent years. Those concerns were thrown into stark relief by a disastrous debate performance against Trump during last year's presidential campaign, in which the then-81-year-old stumbled over his words and repeatedly lost his train of thought. "In recent months, it has become increasingly apparent that former President Biden's aides abused the power of Presidential signatures through the use of an autopen to conceal Biden's cognitive decline," a presidential memorandum issued Wednesday reads. "This conspiracy marks one of the most dangerous and concerning scandals in American history. "The American public was purposefully shielded from discovering who wielded the executive power, all while Biden's signature was deployed across thousands of documents to effect radical policy shifts." Republicans have long claimed that Biden was suffering from intellectual decline even as the White House pressed ahead with major legislation and presidential decrees. They cite his infrequent public appearances, as well as his apparent unwillingness to sit for interviews as evidence of what they say was a man incapable of doing the demanding job of Commander-in-Chief of the United States. They insist that those around him covered up his physical and cognitive decline, taking decisions on his behalf and using a device that could reproduce his signature to allow them to continue to run the country in his name. "The Counsel to the President, in consultation with the Attorney General and the head of any other relevant executive department or agency... shall investigate... whether certain individuals conspired to deceive the public about Biden's mental state and unconstitutionally exercise the authorities and responsibilities of the President," the document says. The probe will also look at "the circumstances surrounding Biden's supposed execution of numerous executive actions during his final years in office (including) the policy documents for which the autopen was used (and) who directed that the President's signature be affixed." Biden's calamitous debate performance ultimately sank his bid for reelection, with key Democratic Party figures soon calling for him to drop out of the race. But it was only several weeks later, after unsuccessful attempts to quieten his critics, that he withdrew, anointing his vice-president Kamala Harris, who eventually lost to Trump.
