Former Monsignor Pace star Shemar Stewart selected 17th by the Bengals in NFL Draft

Miami Herald25-04-2025

For close to a decade, Shemar Stewart has been pegged as one of the next great talents to come out of South Florida. On Thursday in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the defensive end got his validation.
Stewart, who was a five-star prospect coming out of Monsignor Pace in Miami Gardens three years ago, is headed to the Cincinnati Bengals as the No. 17 overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. He's the first player picked from the Miami metropolitan area in the 2025 Draft and the second former Spartan drafted in as many years, following James Williams, who was a seventh-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft last year.
Although he never recorded more than 1 1/2 sacks in any of his three seasons with the Texas A&M Aggies, Stewart constantly flashed enough of the talent that made him the No. 9 overall prospect in the Class of 2022, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The 6-foot-5, 267-pound edge rusher was a third-team All-Southeastern Conference selection last season and led Texas A&M with 39 pressures, despite finishing with only 1 1/2 sacks. Stewart, 21, also set career bests as a junior with 31 tackles, 5 1/2 tackles for loss and his first forced fumble, as well as two passes defended.
As a senior at Monsignor Pace, Stewart was a first-team all-Miami-Dade selection with 85 tackles, 40 tackles for loss and 15 sacks. He was also the No. 1 player in 247's initial rankings for the 2022 recruiting class, racking up offers as early as 2019, before he even started his sophomore year of high school.
This is the third straight year with a lineman from the Miami metro area picked in the first round of the Draft, following Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas alumnus Dallas Turner in the first round of the 2024 Draft and Miami Northwestern alumnus Calijah Kancey in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Stewart's path particularly mirrors Turner's, as both were five-star prospects who went to SEC programs and then became one of the first defenders taken in their respective Draft.

4 takeaways from the Steelers signing of Aaron Rodgers

After a long wait, the Pittsburgh Steelers finally have their quarterback. According to multiple reports, Aaron Rodgers is headed to Pittsburgh and will sign his contract in time to get started with the team at their mandatory minicamp next week. This has been a long time coming even if we all assumed this was how it would go. Here are our big takeaways from the pending signing. Aaron Rodgers will be welcomed with open arms I know there has been some grumbling and some players have made off-hand comments here and there about Rodgers dragging this out. But make no mistake, Rodgers will be welcomed by every player on the roster when he shows up because they know the NFL is a business and they know Rodgers can play. The NFL was banking Rodgers signing with the Steelers All you have to do is look at the Steelers schedule and you know there was nothing random about how things played out. Pittsburgh is running a crazy gauntlet of games aimed at either former Steelers quarterbacks playing the Steelers or Rodgers against his old teams, and that isn't an accident. Rodgers signing won't change a thing about the 2026 NFL draft I know there will be plenty of fans who don't like this addition because they think this addition will make the Steelers just good enough to end up with a lower draft pick and not be abel to secure a top quarterback in the 2026 NFL draft. This won't be an issue. If the Steelers are set on a particular quarterback next year, they have the draft capital to move up and get them and Rodgers will be gone. Rodgers makes the team better If you ask most fans, they were not looking forward to watching Mason Rudolph start 17 games this season because the team isn't good with Rudolph at quarterback. Rodgers might not make the Steelers a Super Bowl contender or even that much better in terms of overall record. But it will be more watchable, competitive football. Contract details for new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers

On Saturday new Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers showed up at the team facilities, passed his physical and signed his one-year contract. According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, the one-year deal for Rodgers is $10 million guaranteed with a $13.65 million base and performance incentives that could run the value up to $19.5 million. Rodgers and the Steelers had been courting all offseason long but it's always felt like a foregone conclusion that eventually the two sides will come together. This contract is a bargain for the Steelers and despite his age, the addition of Rodgers is an upgrade over Mason Rudolph. In an offseason where teams are giving out massive contracts to quarterbacks, Pittsburgh has a chance to win without breaking the bank for 2025. Rodgers got to the Steelers just in time to go through mandatory minicamp with his new team. Rodgers could have signed with the Steelers at any point in the offseason but waited to be sure to miss any voluntary workouts. Steelers announce jersey number for QB Aaron Rodgers

From the moment the Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers, there was mystery surrounding what jersey number Rodgers would wear with the Steelers. Rodgers wore No. 12 when he was with the Green Bay Packers but switched to No. 8 with the New York Jets. Now with the Steelers, Rodgers will continue to wear No. 8. There was some concern that Rodgers might insist on wearing No. 12, which would have opened up a whole can of worms. No Steeler has worn No. 12 since Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw retired in 1983. Pittsburgh has never officially retired the number but this is fairly common for the team to not retire a jersey but still never allow it to be worn. Advertisement Wearing No. 8 means punter Corliss Waitman will switch to No. 3. We hope Rodgers cuts Waitman a nice check for the jersey. Rodgers joins Steelers legends Tommy Maddox and Kenny Pickett as the other two quarterbacks to wear the number.
