Oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd will invest ₹75,000 crore in North Eastern states in setting up 350 biogas plants, expanding its telecom services, retail footprint, and clean energy projects, chairman Mukesh Ambani said on Friday. Speaking at the Rising NorthEast Investors Summit here, Reliance Industries Ltd chairman and managing director said his group will invest in factories for high-quality FMCG products in the region and setting up a 150-bed cancer hospital in Manipur "Reliance has invested around ₹30,000 crore in the region in the past 40 years. In the next five years, we will more than double our investments, with our target at ₹75,000 crore," he said.This will create over 2.5 million direct and indirect employment opportunities as the conglomerate aspires to touch the lives of most of the 45 million population in the North-East.Ambani said he is making six commitments to the Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.The group's telecom unit Jio has already covered 90 per cent of the population with over 5 million 5G subscribers. "We will double this number this year," he said. "Jio's priority will be to bring the revolutionary power of Artificial Intelligence to all schools, hospitals, enterprises and homes."When talent meets technology and competence meets connectivity, our North-East will surge ahead, he said.Ambani said Reliance Retail will vastly increase its procurement of staples, fruits, and vegetables to boost the income of farmers."We will also invest in factories for high-quality FMCG products in the region and promote the region's fabulous artisan economy," he said.In clean energy, Reliance will look to "greatly" enhance generation of solar power in the region, he said without giving details.In line with the vision of converting waste to wealth, Reliance will convert the region's vast 'wasteland into wealth-land', by setting up 350 integrated compressed biogas plants which will turn organic waste into gas which could be used as CNG for transportation as well as fuel in industries and cooking in kitchens, he said.Ambani said Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the group, will bring the best of cancer care to the North-East."To begin with, we have established a 150-bed comprehensive cancer hospital in Manipur. We are collaborating with Mizoram University on the care of breast cancer using genomic data. In Guwahati, we have built an Advanced Molecular Diagnostics and Research Lab. It will be among the largest Genome Sequencing Capacities in India," he said. "We will help transform the North-East into a healthcare hub and a research powerhouse".Stating that the North-East is a treasure-house of world-class talent in multiple sports, he said Reliance Foundation will work with all eight states to set up Olympic Training Centres, which will prepare our youth to be tomorrow's medal-winners in Olympics."For Reliance, it is a matter of privilege to fulfil the dreams of a region that has the fastest rate of economic growth with the youngest population in India," he said.To Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, "You have achieved something unbelievable and unimaginable. Trump signs order to boost drone security ahead of World Cup, Olympics
Officials say the aim of the orders is to boost US manufacturing and innovation while reducing dependence on foreign rivals like China, which leads the global commercial drone market Bloomberg By Allyson Versprille and Hadriana Lowenkron President Donald Trump signed executive orders Friday to bolster US drone capabilities, including strengthening counter-drone tools ahead of major sporting events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics that will be hosted in the country. 'Taking action on airspace security has never been timelier,' Michael Kratsios, the director of White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters Friday, citing the upcoming events that are expected to draw millions of fans to the US. 'The administration is cracking down on unlawful drone use, ordering a federal task force to ensure US control over American skies and prioritizing the detection and identification of drones in real time.' The intention of the three orders, according to officials, is to boost US manufacturing and innovation while decreasing reliance on foreign adversaries, such as China, which dominates the commercial drone market. One executive order to improve counter-drone capabilities establishes the task force, which would review and propose solutions to threats, according to a White House fact sheet. The order also calls for the creation of a national training center to prepare authorities for the World Cup and Olympics and instructs the Federal Aviation Administration to expedite a rule for restricting drone flights near certain facilities, including critical infrastructure, oil refineries, chemical plants and amusement parks. The proposed regulation is already being reviewed by the White House's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. 'Drones are a disruptive technology,' said Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to the president. 'They have an amazing potential for both good and ill.' A second executive order is intended to promote the US market for new technologies, including drones and air taxis. It directs the FAA to speed up another rule under White House review that would allow companies to fly drones beyond a remote pilot's direct line of sight without having to obtain individual waivers and exemptions. Companies, such as those using drones to deliver packages, have said the rules will make it easier for them to scale up their businesses and expand to more locations. The order also directs federal agencies to give priority to US-manufactured drones, according to a fact sheet. Senior White House officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity before the orders were signed Friday, said the directive was meant to reduce reliance on technology from other countries. While it doesn't ban any specific companies, such as China's Da Jiang Innovations — the world leader in commercial drone sales — it does direct the Commerce Department to begin investigations and regulatory reviews to safeguard the US drone supply chain. That could result in a company being placed on a list that would bar new drones from being able to access US networks, one of the officials said. The National Defense Authorization Act enacted at the end of 2024 mandated reviews of both DJI and Autel Robotics, another Chinese firm, to determine if they pose a national security risk. The Trump administration has expanded restrictions on the transfer of advanced technology to China, including artificial intelligence and jet engine parts — moves that are a key point in trade discussions between the world's two largest economies. According to the Atlantic Council, China controls 90% of the commercial drone market in the US and 80% globally. American companies have struggled to compete, which the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International has said is partly because Beijing subsidizes its domestic companies, allowing them to offer products at prices significantly lower than US counterparts. The third executive order is meant to promote supersonic technology in the US, in part by repealing regulations officials cast as impeding development. That includes directing the FAA to repeal a ban on supersonic flights over land, according to a White House fact sheet. Michael Robbins, the chief executive officer of AUVSI, hailed the orders, saying they 'showcase that drones are critical to American economic strength, national security, and global leadership.'

He reminisced about his first lecture at UDCT by Professor Sharma, which greatly inspired him. He highlighted how Professor Sharma quietly influenced India's economic reforms by convincing policymakers that the key to India's growth was freeing the industry from the license-permit-raj. This would enable Indian companies to scale up, reduce import dependence, and compete globally. 'Like my father, Dhirubhai Ambani, he had a burning desire to transform Indian industry from scarcity to global leadership,' said Ambani. He added, 'These two visionary leaders believed that science and technology, combined with private entrepreneurship, would lead to prosperity.' Acknowledging Professor Sharma's contributions to the rise of the Indian chemical industry, Ambani referred to him as 'a Rashtra Guru – a Guru of Bharat'. While discussing 'Guru Dakshina', Ambani announced the unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to ICT, following Professor Sharma's guidance. 'When he tells us something, we just listen. We don't think. He told me, 'Mukesh, you have to do something big for ICT,' and I am very pleased to announce this grant for Professor Sharma,' said the Reliance chairman.
