Half of New Zealanders overwhelmed by notification overload

Research commissioned by 2degrees has found that half of New Zealanders feel overwhelmed by the number of notifications they receive on their digital devices.
The findings reveal that social media, emails, and app alerts have become a major source of disruption for many people across the country, impacting everything from productivity to wellbeing.
Amongst Generation Z—the first generation to grow up entirely online—38% regularly report feeling overwhelmed, panicked, or anxious due to the frequency of notifications. Common Sense Media research from the United States indicated that teenagers receive an average of 237 notifications per day, highlighting the scale of the issue.
Kathryn Berkett, neuroscience and digital wellbeing expert, explained the scientific mechanisms at work. "Notifications trigger dopamine, making them addictive. We think we're good at multitasking, but in reality, we're task-switching, which drains our energy and reduces focus. It also disrupts our real-world interactions - our attention is physically pulled away the moment we hear or see a ping," says Berkett.
Berkett outlined several impacts of excessive notifications, stating that they distract people, make it harder to focus and efficiently complete tasks, affect relationships by pulling attention away from real-life interactions, disrupt sleep, and impact long-term wellbeing. She noted extended exposure to notifications can even "physically alter brain development - cells that fire together, wire together."
2degrees has introduced an initiative called NO-tifications as part of its Fairer Phones Project, aiming to encourage better digital habits and to prompt New Zealanders to regain control over their devices.
Mark Callander, Chief Executive of 2degrees, commented, "Phones are powerful tools for connection, but when notifications dictate our attention, we're not using them on our terms. We're calling on Kiwis to take control of their notifications before notifications take control of them."
The 2degrees-commissioned survey detailed how different age groups are affected. Within Generation Z, 46% described receiving far too many or too many notifications, 38% said they regularly feel overwhelmed, panicked or anxious by the volume received, and 40% reported difficulty concentrating due to their frequency, leading to constant phone checking. The most commonly cited sources of notifications were social media (65%) and email (60%).
Across all respondents aged 16 and above, 50% stated they receive too many notifications, 37% said they feel overwhelmed, panicked, or anxious, and 30% said they struggle to concentrate because of the number they receive.
Sean Lyons, Chief Online Safety Officer at Netsafe, lent his support to the initiative. "At Netsafe, we're seeing growing concern about how constant connectivity and screen time affect young people's focus and their overall wellbeing. 2degrees' Fairer Phones Project initiative taps into an important conversation - how we can all be more intentional in our digital lives. Encouraging people to pause and reflect on their phone habits is a valuable step toward building healthier, more balanced relationships with technology."
2degrees has recommended several practical steps for those seeking to reduce notification overload: be selective when granting apps permission to send notifications, regularly review and mute unnecessary alerts, and designate specific times to check notifications rather than responding to them throughout the day.

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is proud to support Auckland woman, Catherine Cooke, as she presents her petition to MP Hon. Mark Mitchell, urging the Government to fund the cancer drug Keytruda for early stage triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Catherine is presenting the petition at Breast Cancer Foundation NZ office in Parnell on 27 June at 2pm. The level of support for this petition is significant and shows New Zealanders are fed up with falling behind the rest of the world in terms of access to life-saving treatment. Catherine was diagnosed with early TNBC, an aggressive form of breast cancer in November last year after her yearly mammogram. She was told Keytruda with chemotherapy would give her the best chance of survival – but the drug would only be funded if her cancer was advanced. Instead, Catherine has had to put most of her work on hold and sell her family home to fund the treatment - which is costing around $85,000. Around 350 women are diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer every year, which is approximately 10% of all breast cancer diagnoses. It is also more common in younger women with nearly 15% of diagnoses in women under the age of 45 being triple negative. For one in three women with early triple negative breast cancer, it will return and become incurable within five years. It is the deadliest form of breast cancer and is harder to treat. Unlike most other breast cancers, triple negative breast cancer doesn't respond to hormone-blocking treatments and targeted drugs. Keytruda is an immunotherapy drug, and it is the only targeted treatment that works to fight triple negative breast cancer and is given to patients alongside chemotherapy. It's fully funded in 40 other countries including Australia, Canada and Britain. New international research was published last year and showed that Keytruda can stop women dying from triple negative breast cancer because it's highly effective at preventing cancer coming back. Patients with early triple negative breast cancer receiving Keytruda in a clinical trial were 34% less likely to die and 32% less likely to have their cancer spread beyond the breast. It is widely accepted by the medical community internationally as the best drug to treat early triple negative breast cancer and New Zealanders deserve access to this treatment. Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Chief Executive, Ah-Leen Rayner said 'women like Catherine are having to go through drastic lengths to be able to pay for Keytruda. It's atrocious that New Zealanders are selling their homes, asking for help from their parents or complete strangers to find hundreds of thousands of dollars, or potentially simply going without treatment that could save their lives. 'We are so grateful to Catherine for working tirelessly for better drug access for New Zealanders in the future, but she shouldn't have to. We're urging the government to ensure Pharmac has the budget it needs to fund these essential medicines that are standard of care around the world.'

Minister of Health A total of 180 overseas-trained doctors have expressed interest in a new Government-funded training programme aimed at boosting New Zealand's primary care workforce, Health Minister Simeon Brown says. 'New Zealand needs more doctors – particularly in primary and rural healthcare care settings – and this Government is taking action to make that happen,' Mr Brown says. 'That's why we've launched a new two-year training programme to support up to 100 additional overseas-trained doctors across the country.' Announced in March, the programme supports qualified international doctors to become registered in New Zealand, with a particular focus on those wanting to enter general practice roles – creating a clear pathway for doctors already in the country and ready to contribute to our health system. 'It makes no sense that overseas-trained doctors already living here, ready and willing to work in primary care, are held back simply due to a lack of supported clinical training opportunities. We are changing that.' Applications for the programme closed on 31 May, with 184 expressions of interest received – well exceeding the number of places available. The first group of 10 overseas-trained doctors will begin in Waikato this July, with Health New Zealand currently working to match the remaining placement locations with district and primary care providers. 'This strong response shows the scale of untapped potential in New Zealand. These doctors are eager to work where they are most needed – and this Government is opening the door for them to do so. 'I've also requested advice from Health New Zealand on how to provide clear, structured pathways for doctors who have passed the NZREX to begin practising under limited scopes while they wait for a placement in general practice training. 'This is part of our broader plan to strengthen primary and rural healthcare and ensure New Zealanders get timely access to the care they need, no matter where they live,' Mr Brown says. Open banking in New Zealand advances with NZD $13.77m spent

Payments NZ has released a report outlining six years of progress in open banking, highlighting industry delivery, collaboration and partnerships across New Zealand's open data ecosystem. The report, titled "Shaping Open Banking Together", reviews efforts and outcomes achieved by the sector since the establishment of the API Centre in 2019. Key metrics include the release of 25 open banking API standards, adoption by four major banks covering over 80% of customer accounts, and the engagement of more than 1,100 users in an API sandbox environment resulting in the development of 235 unique applications and over 13.7 million test calls. API standards and usage Since its inception, the API Centre has delivered six versions of API standards, with widespread implementation in the banking sector. Major financial institutions now support key open banking standards, facilitating secure and seamless access to banking services for a large proportion of New Zealanders. The API sandbox, supported by Glueware, has played a significant role in fostering innovation, with hundreds of community contributors involved in shaping the ecosystem. Community engagement has increased markedly, from just five contributors in 2019 to over 500 in the current year, and more than 11,000 working group hours have been logged by participants. Inclusive governance model The API Centre has adopted a governance model developed through industry collaboration. Over a dozen versions of the API Centre Terms and Conditions have been refined in consultation with banks, fintech firms, regulators and other stakeholders. This approach is described as being based on trust, inclusion and co-design. Collaboration has also extended to work with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) on the Consumer Data Right (CPD) framework. Looking to the future, Payments NZ states that this inclusive and partnership-driven approach will continue as the industry transitions towards a regulated open banking environment. "We've built a world-class foundation for open banking in New Zealand – not through mandate, but through collective mahi. This report is a chance to pause, reflect, and acknowledge what we've achieved together," says Phil Cass, Manager of Payments NZ's API Centre. Financial investment and efficiency Payments NZ highlights that the open banking ecosystem has been established at a considerably lower cost compared with international efforts. The total investment over six years amounts to NZD $13.77 million, which represents approximately 5% of Australia's expenditure and 4% of that in the UK for similar sector initiatives. Phil Cass stated, "We now have upgraded, future-ready API standards being implemented by the major banks, new products hitting the market, and a strong platform for innovation. It's been a true partnership approach, and the outcomes speak for themselves." Cass noted that New Zealand's approach has allowed for progress without the need for regulatory compulsion, saying, "Our approach in Aotearoa is unique – open banking here has been shaped by cooperation, not compliance." He continued, "We've seen the cost of regulation in the UK and Australia, and in Aotearoa we have delivered a fully functioning ecosystem at a fraction of the cost." "We're carrying forward the same spirit of industry-led partnership and progress as we transition to a regulated environment for open banking." Data sovereignty and future focus The recent release also marked the launch of Ngā Tohu Ārahi, the new Data Handling Guidelines created in partnership with Nicholson Consulting. These guidelines are grounded in the principles of Māori Data Sovereignty and have implications for the design and management of data systems in the banking sector. Cass explained, "These guidelines are about more than compliance – they reflect our collective responsibility to design data systems with integrity and care." Preparations are underway for the formal designation of banks under New Zealand's CPD Act, expected in December 2025. Payments NZ believes the foundations laid through the API Centre will continue to support secure, innovative and inclusive banking solutions. "This is just the beginning," says Cass. "The next chapter of open banking will be even more impactful – and we're ready."
