
UK scientists find genes linked with chronic fatigue syndrome

chronic fatigue syndrome
that should help dispel the notion that the debilitating condition is psychological or driven by laziness.
Their study found eight areas of genetic code that are different in people with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) than in healthy volunteers.
The finding provides "the first robust evidence that genes contribute to a person's chance of developing the disease," the researchers said in a statement.
The key features of the condition include worsening of fatigue, pain and brain fog after even minor physical or mental activity.
Very little has been known about the causes of ME/CFS, and there is no diagnostic test or cure. The condition is believed to affect around 67 million people worldwide, the researchers said.
The DecodeME study analyzed DNA samples from 15,579 people who reported having chronic fatigue on a questionnaire and 259,909 people without it, all of European descent.
Gene variants that were more common in people reporting ME/CFS were linked to the immune and nervous systems, according to a report of the study that has not yet been peer-reviewed.
At least two of the gene regions relate to how the body responds to infection, which aligns with reports that the symptoms often start after an infectious illness, the researchers said.
Another gene region has previously been identified in people with chronic pain, another common symptom of the condition.
The findings "align with decades of patients reporting on their experiences," researcher Andy Devereux-Cooke said in a statement, adding that they "should prove game changing in the ME/CFS research field."
"These results will not mean that a test or cure will be developed straight away, but they will lead to a greater understanding," he said.
Scientists who were not involved in the study said using volunteers who self-reported chronic fatigue syndrome rather than restricting participation to those with a diagnosis from a medical professional somewhat weakened its conclusions. They called for larger studies to replicate the results.
Substantial work will be necessary "to translate these findings into new treatments," said Dr. Jackie Cliff, who studies infection and immunity in ME/CFS at Brunel University of London. "This will take considerable investment in academia and by industry."

Donor milk support goes up at Rajaji hospital
Madurai: The breast milk bank at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) has been a lifeline for newborns in the hospital for nearly a decade now. This year, till July, 2,529 mothers have donated breast milk to the bank, helping 2,334 babies. This is a considerable rise from last year when a total of 3,821 mothers donated. The department of neonatology, which deals with care for newborns, particularly premature infants, in GRH is the largest in the state. Head of the department, Dr J Ashok Raja, said 15 to 20% of the newborns have a condition called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). "During the first week of life, the baby starts vomiting, and it is harmful to the body," he said. "Breast milk is the best preventive measure for NEC." He added that there are biological components in breast milk that have growth factors for the newborn that formula milk can't match. Babies born in less than 32 weeks or weighing less than 1.5kg are the most important candidates for receiving breast milk. Doctors emphasise six months of exclusive breastfeeding for the newborn. Breast milk donation starts with a screening of the mother for active diseases like HIV or transmissible infections. This is followed by counselling and collection of consent. The milk collected is sent to storage, and from there to pasteurisation and to the microbiological lab. After ensuring the milk is fit, it is distributed to newborns in need. Donor milk is especially given to premature newborns within the hospital for whom breast milk is crucial. Some mothers who are unable to breastfeed their child or those who have nipple soreness also use stored milk for their child. Most mothers who come to donate breast milk are doing so out of gratitude, says Ashok. "They may have a premature firstborn, after which they return to donate breast milk," he said. Other factors that influence mothers to donate are education and awareness, he said. AI Is Helping Historians With Their Latin
People across the Roman empire wrote poetry, kept business accounts and described their conquests and ambitions in inscriptions on pots, plaques and walls. The surviving text gives historians a rare glimpse of life in those times—but most of the objects are broken or worn. 'It's like trying to solve a gigantic jigsaw puzzle, only there is tens of thousands more pieces to that puzzle, and about 90% of them are missing,' said Thea Sommerschield, a historian at the University of Nottingham. Now, artificial intelligence is filling in the blanks. An AI tool designed by Sommerschield and other European scientists can predict the missing text of partially degraded Latin inscriptions made hundreds of years ago and help historians estimate their date and place of origin. The tool, called Aeneas, was trained against a database of more than 176,000 known Latin inscriptions created over 1,500 years in an area stretching from modern-day Portugal to Afghanistan, said Yannis Assael, a staff research scientist at Google DeepMind who was part of the project team. People used the Latin language differently depending on where and when they lived. This adds to the challenge of pinpointing the meaning and provenance of found inscriptions, but it also presents clues that historians can use. The Temple of Rome and Augustus in Ankara, Turkey, where the text of the Res Gestae Divi Augusti is inscribed. Aeneas compares a given sequence of letters against those in its database, bringing up those that are most similar, essentially automating at a massive scale what historians would do manually to analyze a newly found artifact. Nearly two dozen historians who tested the tool found it helpful 90% of the time, the team that developed it reported in the journal Nature in July. Because Aeneas works best where there are many known inscriptions from a given place and time, it may be of less help if something truly unique turned up, said Anne Rogerson, a Latin scholar at the University of Sydney who wasn't involved with the work. 'But most inscriptions are quite formulaic, so this isn't going to be an issue a lot of the time,' she said. Among the tests, the team deployed the tool on the text of a famous Roman inscription on the walls of a temple in modern-day Ankara, Turkey. Called the Res Gestae Divi Augusti, it describes the reign of the Roman emperor Augustus. In its analysis Aeneas offered two likely time spans for when the inscription was made, mirroring an existing debate among historians who are split over whether the text was created during Augustus's lifetime, or after his death.
