CPI(M) stages protest demanding closure of Ariyamangalam dump yard in Tiruchi

The Hindu11-07-2025
Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a road blockade protest at the Ariyamangalam dump yard in Tiruchi on Friday, demanding its closure. The garbage dump was an environmental hazard, they contended.
'For the past 30 years, a large quantum of waste collected daily from all 65 wards of the Tiruchi City Corporation have been dumped across 47.7 acres in Ariyamangalam. Over time, this led to several lakh tonnes of garbage piling up into mounds of nearly 40 feet high. Residents of surrounding areas have long raised concerns over groundwater contamination, toxic air, odour, and the spread of vector-borne diseases. Frequent fire outbreaks at the site have caused severe breathing issues, forcing some residents to vacate their homes.' said R. Raja, CPI(M) district committee member.
'In response to public outcry, the previous AIADMK government launched a ₹49.98-crore bio mining project. The DMK government later allocated an additional ₹23 crore in 2021, bringing the total to ₹73 crore. Officials claimed that around 50% of the waste has been cleared. However, the process has been stalled over the past year, leaving a big heap of garbage,' added Mr.Raja.
The protesters urged the government to investigate the delay .
The protest was led by CPI(M)'s Ariyamangalam, Ukkadai, and Kattur-Palakkarai area committees. District secretary Govi Vetri Selvan led the protesters into the dump yard with some briefly surrounding an earth mover operating there raising slogans against the Corporation. The protesters left the site at the intervention of the police.

Express View: Dishom Guru Shibu Soren

On a winter day in 1957, a 15-year-old boy in Gola block in undivided Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand was waiting for his father, who never returned. School teacher Sobaran Manjhi was killed by moneylenders, and young Shivcharan's life changed forever. The teenager pledged to end the exploitation by moneylenders and to fight for his people, the Adivasis. In the coming decades, the young man who came to be known as Shibu Soren and later affectionately called Guruji became the fulcrum of Adivasi politics. Shibu Soren, 81, who died on Monday, leaves behind a legacy of inspiring political vision and indefatigable grit mixed with some persistent controversies. After his father's death, Soren led a band of youth in Santhal Pargana and initiated a movement called Dhan Kati. The group encouraged Adivasis to harvest crops from lands that were illegally grabbed by moneylenders when they failed to pay off the debt. Soon, this movement became an organised struggle for the recognition of Adivasi rights over jal, jungle, zameen. In 1972, Soren, along with A K Roy, a Marxist leader, and Binod Bihari Mahato, founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and revived the movement for statehood. To bring the industrial workers, sadans, the non-tribal natives of Jharkhand, and Adivasis together was not an easy task. Soren realised that the dream of a separate Jharkhand would not be fulfilled without the participation of non-tribal communities. He sought to change the definition of Diku — for him, the term no longer only meant 'outsiders', but referred to those who exploited Jharkhand's resources. His dream of a separate state materialised only in 2000. Political instability, allegations of corruption and violence didn't let any of the CMs complete their tenure in the new state until 2014, when the BJP made Raghubar Das the first non-Adivasi chief minister. Soren's own political life was also shadowed by controversies. In 2004, within two months of becoming Union minister of coal and mines, he had to resign due to an arrest warrant for his alleged role in the Chirudih massacre of 1975, in which 10 people were killed. In 2008, a fast-track court acquitted him, citing lack of evidence. He faced allegations of taking bribes to save the minority government of P V Narasimha Rao in 1993. The SC in 1998 ruled that legislators enjoy impunity from criminal prosecution in bribery cases related to their votes and speeches in Parliament — the judgment was overruled in 2024. However, controversies could not take away from Soren's achievements. After Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren was the leader who successfully reimagined Adivasi politics beyond the limits of identity, sub-nationalism and language.

BJP raises spectre of ‘political Islam' infiltrating Church in Kerala

The BJP has raised the spectre of 'political Islam' infiltrating the Church in Kerala. The party's State vice-president Shone George told a news conference on Monday (August 4, 2025) that radical Islamists, beholden to the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Jamaat-e-Islami, had infiltrated Church protests in sizeable numbers, including those led by bishops, across the State. He noted the presence of Islamist elements in demonstrations led by Church leaders and the laity in several locations, including Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Mananthavady, Angamaly and Ernakulam. 'I talked to the senior-most prelate in Kerala on Monday. He seemed not to be concerned about the presence of radical Islamists among the demonstrators,' he added. Asked to adduce evidence to back his charges, Mr. George asked mediapersons to contact the State police intelligence or mine their sources in the localities. Mr. George alleged that the SDPI's gambit was to use the arrest of the nuns as a foil for alienating Christians from the BJP. The SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami's tactics had the tacit backing of the Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. He accused the ruling front and the Opposition of seeking to frustrate the efforts of the BJP governments at the Centre and Chhattisgarh to secure an early release for the nuns. 'Both the Congress and the CPI(M) wanted the nuns to remain in jail to ensure that the emotive issue festers and retards the BJP's bourgeoning acceptance among Christians in Kerala,' he added. Mr. George said the Vatican Council in 1964 had ruled against forced conversion. 'In contrast, if Tipu Sultan's expeditionary forays had not halted at Kodungalloor 200 years ago, Kerala's social matrix would have been different,' he added. Mr. George attacked the Congress and CPI(M) for seeking the support of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) respectively during the recent byelection in the Nilambur Assembly constituency. He said the BJP was with 'patriotic Muslims,' who, he stated, were in the majority. BJP leader S. Suresh, who is also a State vice-president, said the party would not allow political adversaries to single out State president Rajiv Chandrasekhar for criticism.
