Egypt, India discuss expanding industrial, investment partnerships

Mohamed El-Shimy, Minister of Public Enterprises Sector, held a meeting with Suresh Reddy, India's ambassador to Egypt, to enhance bilateral cooperation in economic and industrial fields and explore partnership opportunities with companies affiliated with the ministry.
At the outset, El-Shimy praised the long-standing and historic ties between Egypt and India, expressing hope to elevate these relations to broader horizons of cooperation. He also highlighted the range of incentives and facilitations that Egypt offers to foreign investors, inviting Indian businessmen and investors to visit the ministry's factories and companies to see their capabilities and investment prospects up close—particularly in sectors identified as priorities for joint collaboration.
The meeting discussed potential cooperation in several strategic sectors, including pharmaceuticals—especially active pharmaceutical ingredients and treatments for chronic and complex diseases—as well as textiles, ready-made garments, fertilisers, chemical industries, aluminium, vehicles, and mining. It also touched on the hospitality sector, where partnerships already exist with some Indian companies.
El-Shimy and Ambassador Reddy reviewed the portfolio of companies affiliated with the ministry, detailing their areas of operation and the investment opportunities they present. This portfolio offers a solid foundation for potential industrial and commercial partnerships.
For his part, Reddy affirmed the depth and strength of Egypt–India relations, describing them as 'historical and rooted in mutual respect and cooperation' across many domains. He expressed his country's interest in further strengthening ties with Egypt, particularly in economic and industrial sectors, noting Egypt's strategic geographic location, modern infrastructure, and significant investment potential.
The meeting comes within the framework of the Public Enterprises Sector Ministry's broader strategy to expand international cooperation and global partnerships. This approach aims to enhance the performance of the ministry's affiliated companies, attract foreign direct investment, and increase the added value of Egyptian industries—supporting Egypt's path toward sustainable economic development.

Egypt car market reverses course as prices plunge, supply rebounds: Experts - Markets & Companies

After years of soaring prices, shortages, and market distortions, Egypt's automotive sector is witnessing a dramatic shift, with car prices falling across key segments. The notorious 'overprice' premiums have nearly vanished, and industry players are betting big on local manufacturing. Experts say the trend is not a passing phase but the start of a structural realignment that could reshape the market through 2026. For Egyptian consumers long burdened by inflated vehicle prices and limited options, the tide appears to be turning. According to leading industry figures, car prices in Egypt have dropped significantly since early 2025, with expectations of continued declines driven by currency stabilization, increased imports, stronger domestic production, and strategic policy interventions. 'Between 15 to 18 brands have lowered their prices, some by as much as 20 percent. This includes major players like Citroën, which slashed prices by over 10 percent, and SsangYong, which cut prices by nearly 23 percent,' Osama Abu El-Magd, head of the Egyptian Automotive Dealers Association, told Ahram Online. This downward trajectory coincides with a surge in investment from automotive companies. Five major manufacturers have announced plans to invest more than $600 million over the next year, aiming to triple domestic production capacity from 95,000 to around 260,000 vehicles annually. These expansions are expected to reduce reliance on imports and increase market competitiveness. Currency stability rebuilds confidence The easing of foreign currency restrictions and the stabilization of the Egyptian pound were pivotal in restoring market dynamics. 'The resumption of letters of credit and access to hard currency enabled importers to restock adequately,' said Amr Soliman, a member of the Automotive Committee at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. 'That was the turning point. We've since seen five new models launched, and with Nasr Automotive's plant coming online soon, supply is poised to grow further,' he added. Weakened demand drives price cuts While supply factors have played a significant role, a drop in consumer demand due to inflationary pressure also helped push prices downward. 'In the second quarter of 2025, demand softened considerably. This forced distributors to offer more competitive pricing to clear inventory, especially as new brands entered the market, intensifying competition,' Soliman said. Meanwhile, the normalization of maritime logistics through the Red Sea and falling shipping costs have eased price pressures. Previously, high transport costs were a major driver of car price inflation. Now, supply chains have recovered significantly, contributing to cost reductions. Additionally, domestic production has become a game-changer. Five new vehicle assembly plants were launched in the past seven months, according to Abu El-Magd, particularly impacting vehicles priced under EGP 1.5 million. 'This created a new layer of price competition, leading to price drops of up to 20 percent on some models. We're also seeing a significant increase in the availability of affordable vehicles, which has reshaped market expectations,' he explained. However, higher-end segments, those priced above EGP 1.5 million, remain less affected due to limited competition. The slump in new car prices has had a stark effect on used vehicles, which have seen a value decline of over 20 percent. 'When a brand-new 2025 model sells for EGP 720,000, and a 2016 used model is EGP 700,000, the choice is obvious. This dynamic has weakened demand for used cars considerably,' Abu El-Magd told Ahram Online. Government strategy: From burden to export At the heart of the transformation is Egypt's national strategy to localize the auto industry. Backed by direct presidential support, the plan aims to reduce the sector's drag on the trade balance and instead turn it into a net exporter of vehicles and components. The strategy includes production incentives starting from 10,000 vehicles annually, direct subsidies of up to EGP 50,000 per car, depending on price tier, support for feeder industries, and regulatory reforms to remove investment barriers. Still, structural hurdles persist, including customs duties on essential components, multi-stage value-added tax (VAT) collection, which burdens liquidity, and development fees of up to 8.5 percent on vehicles over 2,000cc. 'To make local manufacturing truly competitive, these burdens must be eased. Tying incentives to export performance would also raise the global profile of Egyptian-made vehicles,' Soliman stated. Outlook: Sustained price decline through 2026 Both Soliman and Abu El-Magd agree that current trends are not short-lived. With 10 new factories expected to be operational by the end of the year and local production capacity expanding, car prices are expected to continue their decline into 2026. 'We are entering a new era in Egypt's automotive market, defined by local manufacturing and fair competition. This is good news not only for consumers but for the broader economy,' said Abu El-Magd. 'Exchange rate stability, increased supply, stronger competition, and state support have eliminated overpricing and driven down costs. The key to sustaining this progress lies in deepening local industry incentives and removing remaining barriers to expansion,' Soliman concluded. US to Host Sudan Quartet Meeting Wednesday to Push for Political Settlement

Washington will host a high-level meeting of the Sudan Quartet on Wednesday, as international efforts intensify to end the protracted war that has devastated Sudan since 2023. The meeting will bring together the foreign ministers of the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—four key countries engaged in mediating a peaceful resolution to the conflict. According to diplomatic sources who spoke to local media outlets, the meeting aims to forge a common vision for ending the war, securing a comprehensive ceasefire, and laying the groundwork for a credible political process involving all Sudanese stakeholders. The talks will also focus on ending foreign interference and mitigating the wider regional fallout of the ongoing crisis. The same sources firmly denied recent speculation about the potential expansion of the Quartet to include other countries such as Qatar or the United Kingdom. They stressed that any changes to the group's composition would require prior agreement among current members and emphasized that the Quartet's priority remains focused, effective engagement among the four core states most directly involved in the Sudan file. A joint communiqué is expected after the meeting, outlining the Quartet's unified stance on key issues: achieving a lasting cessation of hostilities, initiating an inclusive political dialogue, halting external involvement in Sudanese affairs, facilitating humanitarian access, and affirming support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and institutional integrity. The conflict, which broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led to mass displacement, the collapse of public services, and widespread food insecurity. With both sides locked in a military stalemate and the humanitarian situation deteriorating, international pressure is mounting for a negotiated solution. The upcoming Quartet meeting follows renewed diplomatic outreach by Egypt, a key regional actor. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty recently visited Chad's capital, N'Djamena, where he held talks with Chadian Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah. The two discussed the repercussions of the Sudanese conflict on regional stability and underscored the urgency of reaching a peaceful settlement. Following the talks, the Chadian foreign ministry issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to supporting any initiative that helps restore peace in Sudan. Chad has been directly impacted by the conflict, particularly in its eastern regions bordering Darfur, where tens of thousands of refugees have fled across the border. The Washington meeting comes at a pivotal moment. With no clear military breakthrough in sight and growing fatigue among regional stakeholders, observers hope that the Quartet's engagement will mark a turning point and help pave the way for a broader peace process.

Egypt, Italy discuss securing ceasefire in Gaza, Libya - Foreign Affairs

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty discussed key regional developments in a phone call on Sunday with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, focusing on reaching a ceasefire in Libya and the Gaza Strip, as well as concerns related to the Horn of Africa and Egypt's water security. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers asserted the need for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya as a critical step toward restoring stability. They also stressed the importance of dismantling militias and the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya, describing this as the only viable path to ensuring long-term peace and preventing irregular migration across the Mediterranean. Additionally, FM Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's intensive diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid to starving Palestinians to alleviate their suffering amid Israel's ongoing genocidal war. For his part, the Italian foreign minister praised Egypt's relentless efforts to halt the war and ensure the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza's starving population. Tajani also expressed Italy's full support for the planned International Conference on the Early Recovery and Reconstruction of Gaza, which Egypt will host once a ceasefire is secured, confirming his country's participation in the conference. Both ministers also agreed to maintain close coordination to intensify international pressure for reaching a ceasefire and unfettered humanitarian aid access to Gaza. Furthermore, both sides exchanged views on the escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa. FM Abdelatty also highlighted Egypt's concerns regarding the Nile River and water security, reiterating Cairo's position on the need for adherence to international law governing shared water resources. He stressed the importance of cooperation based on consensus and mutual benefit to safeguard the interests of all Nile Basin countries. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's rejection of unilateral actions that violate international law in the Eastern Nile Basin. He asserted that Cairo will take all the necessary measures, in line with international legal frameworks, to protect its vital water interests. Both ministers also underscored the importance of continued coordination between Egypt and Italy, particularly given the strong ties between the two countries' leaderships.
