I can't wait to have a love affair with south films: Shefali Shah
I love what I do, and I want to keep working forever,' says
actress Shefali Shah
as she sits down to chat with us during her recent visit to Chennai. Excerpts from an interview:
'THERE ARE AMAZING DIRECTORS IN THE SOUTH; I'M DYING TO DO SOMETHING HERE'
Ask her why she hasn't acted in a South Indian film until now, and she replies, 'I was offered one or two roles, but they weren't great characters. They didn't have depth. I'm dying to do something in the South because there are such amazing directors here whom I respect tremendously. I can't wait to have a love affair with South films.'
Shefali has already made a list of South filmmakers she wants to work with, which she reads to us. 'Mani Ratnam sir, Rajamouli sir, Revathy, Pa Ranjith, Lokesh Kanagaraj, Karthik Subbaraj, Sudha Kongara, Rishab Shetty, and Anjali Menon,' she shares.
'THERE WAS A DIFFICULT PHASE WHEN THE WORK I WANTED WAS NOT COMING MY WAY'
Reflecting on her being typecast in mother roles at a young age, the actress shares, 'Honestly, I did those roles because I liked them. It was my choice. Unfortunately, you then get typecast, and there was a long, difficult phase when the kind of work I wanted to do was not coming my way. I realised that the work I want to do, like a character that makes me want to be on set, will rarely happen.'
'IN OTT, CHARACTERS DON'T FRIVOLOUSLY COME AND GO'
Shefali feels OTT has been a gamechanger for her. 'At one point, I thought I wouldn't get the work I wanted to do. But with OTT coming into play, everything changed. And I'm so glad it did; otherwise, there was no female lead beyond 25. A woman used to just be somebody's mother or aunt after a certain age. Unfortunately, such roles aren't well fleshed out in films even now. But in OTT, characters don't frivolously come and go. They make an impact even if they are there only for half an episode.'
'FILMS WILL NOT DIE IN INDIA; WATCHING MOVIES WITH FAMILY IS PART OF OUR CULTURE'
'Going to theatres and watching movies with family is a big part of India's culture. So, Bollywood can never die,' says Shefali. She stresses that films are ingrained in India's culture and says, 'Cricket will not die in our country just because we lost one World Cup. It's the same for films.' She also disagrees that the audience stopped going to the theatre due to the OTT boom. 'OTT might have played a small part, but that is not the only reason. The audience now has the option to watch amazing work from across the globe, so they are more selective. You can't dish out anything and give it to them; they aren't going to lap it up anymore,' she states.
'I WAS OVER THE MOON WHEN I GOT NOMINATED FOR AN EMMY; NOW I WANT TO WIN'
Shefali, who was nominated for Best Actress at the International Emmy Awards 2023 for
Delhi Crime
, says, 'Initially, I simply wanted to see my name on the nomination list and was over the moon when I got nominated. But when I didn't win, I was like, 'Now, I want to win.' So, fingers crossed, some day, I will end up winning an Emmy.'
'Priyanka, Alia and Ranveer are team players'
Shefali names her Dil Dhadakne Do co-stars, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh, and Darlings co-star Alia Bhatt as her favourite contemporary actors. 'Even though making a film is not an individual process, actors can be self-conceited. But all three of them are absolute team players,' she states.

Sydney Sweeney's limited-edition soap made with her actual bathwater goes live online, sells out instantly
Sydney Sweeney took the obsession of her fans to the next level when she launched a bar of soap made with her actual bathwater. Named Sydney's Bathwater Bliss , the product is a cheeky collaboration with men's grooming brand Dr. Squatch , and caused a stir online. Bars of soap made with the Hollywood heartthrob's actual bathwater went on sale Friday and immediately sold out, reports NBC NewYork. All 5,000 bars of 'Sydney's Bathwater Bliss' soap, priced at $8 each, sold out almost instantly after going live online. Made with pine bark extract, exfoliating sand, and a few drops of the water Sydney Sweeney bathed in, the product was released at 12 p.m. ET and marked as sold out within seconds. Fans flooded social media with reports of website crashes and checkout queues stretching up to 250 minutes. Others prospective buyers/bathers claimed the soap was never there to be had. "Nah, it was there," the Dr. Squatch account responded to one commenter. "People just bought it in .0001 seconds." Bars of the soap were listed for sale on eBay for over $200 shortly after the sale. At the NYC premiere of her forthcoming movie, 'Echo Valley,' the actress responded to a reporter who stated that her business endeavor encourages men to 'take showers.' She said, 'I mean, honestly though.' Live Events 'I think that it's more fun to see everybody else talk about it,' Sweeney added when asked what she thought about fan's mixed reactions to the stunt. She admitted that it was in fact her idea to use the left over suds from a previous campaign with Dr. Squatch and that she 'pitched' the idea of a bar of soap with a 'splash' of her bath water. The idea for the product emerged after Sydney Sweeney appeared in a 2024 Dr. Squatch body wash promotion, where she was seen soaking in a tub—a moment that captivated many of her fans. Now, the Emmy-nominated Euphoria star has teamed up once again with the men's personal care brand, this time to launch a new product she personally helped create. "Introducing Sydney's Bathwater Bliss! A very real, very limited-edition soap made with my actual bathwater.' The scent of the medium-grit soap -- in a nod to Sweeney's Pacific Northwest roots -- combines pine, Douglas fir and earthy moss. Sweeney in last week's press release said her new product is 'weird in the best way.' The 27-year-old was asked about it Wednesday at the New York premiere of her new movie "Echo Valley," telling E! News she pitched the idea. But she wouldn't say much else about the soap just days before it went on sale -- and then sold out. "I think that it's more fun to see everybody else talk about it," she said. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

David Beckham likely to receive knighthood soon. What will be his title?
Former England football star David Beckham is reportedly set to receive a knighthood in the upcoming King's Birthday Honours list, marking a major milestone for the global sports icon. The former England captain, who already holds an OBE awarded in 2003, will be named a knight in the official list expected next week, according to The Sun. David Beckham, who recently turned 50, has long been tipped for the honour over his football career and extensive charity work, particularly as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. Should the honour be confirmed, he would formally become 'Sir David', while his wife, fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, would assume the courtesy title of 'Lady Beckham.' His path to knighthood was reportedly delayed after HMRC flagged concerns over an alleged tax avoidance scheme, which halted a planned honour in 2014. Speculation around the accolade reignited after Beckham's 2013 retirement and reached new highs following the success of the Emmy-winning Beckham Netflix documentary. During a conversation at the Chelsea Flower Show last month, King Charles appeared to make a cryptic reference to the upcoming honour, asking Beckham if he had 'received his 50th birthday present,' to which the former footballer replied: 'It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind.' The Queen added, 'I'm glad you got the roses.' Beckham, who earned 115 caps and captained England 59 times, is the only Englishman to score in three separate World Cups. His club career highlights include Manchester United's legendary treble-winning season in 1999. After stints at Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and AC Milan, he co-founded US team Inter Miami, helping bring international football stars stateside.
