S'wak govt committed to rural growth, says Uggah
KUCHING: The increase in rural development allocation for this year's Sarawak budget is a reflection of the state government's unwavering resolve to narrow the rural-urban gap and ensure equitable growth.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said RM6.8bil had been allocated under the Sarawak 2025 Budget for rural development, which rose from RM5.695bil in 2024, indicating Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's clear commitment to uplift the well-being of the rural communities.
In his message for the Gawai Dayak festival, which begins today, Uggah said the rural development focus has seen major bridge projects being implemented as growth catalysts.
'Five (bridges) have already been completed, including the Batang Saribas 1 Bridge in Pusa, Betong and others such as the iconic Bintulu Jepak, Muara Lassa, Marudi and Batang Rajang bridges.
'Six more, including the nation's longest river bridge – Batang Lupar 1 – are expected to be completed by year-end,' said Uggah, who is also the State Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Bernama reported.
He said that Gawai Dayak should be accepted as a festival to bridge inter-racial relationships in Sarawak, which has been a pertinent essence for the state to continue progressing.
'Just as bridges connect our cities and villages, this Gawai season should also serve as a 'bridge' to strengthen the bond of friendship, unity and harmony among us all. Let us celebrate our diversity under the spirit of 'Segulai Sejalai' or Together in Unity,' he added.

Two months after the incident on April 1, some victims are now in a tight spot as they are required to return the aid. Mohamad Nasir Ab Hamid, 69, a resident of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru said his family is currently staying in a small house near their original home with rental support for three months while waiting for their house to be repaired. "My house was deemed a total loss, with an estimated repair cost of RM150,000, but to this day, the appointed contractor has yet to begin work,' he told Bernama on Monday (June 2). Mohamad Nasir said he understands that it will take time, as many other homes were also destroyed in the incident. "When the contractor starts the repairs, I want to see how they will go about it. We've yet to be informed how the process will be carried out,' he said. Mohamad Nasir said the temporary vehicle he received after the incident was returned last month when the loan period ended. "We're not looking for luxury - just a car that can serve our everyday needs,' said the father of nine. His wife, Aliyah Ismail, 55, said she was grateful for the assistance received but hoped that cash compensation would also be provided to help victims, especially those left homeless. Previously a catering business operator, she now sells traditional cakes and snacks, earning between RM20 and RM30 a day, in addition to financial support from her children. Aliyah said so far, her family has only been informed of assistance for home repairs. "As of now, we haven't heard anything about compensation - only about home repairs. Compensation should be given. We have no money, no income. Rental is expensive. "Goods are expensive too, and to restart my catering business, I need to buy a lot of supplies and equipment because everything was destroyed in the fire,' she said. The gas pipeline inferno on April 1 saw flames reaching over 30m high, with temperatures soaring to 1,000 degrees Celsius. It took nearly eight hours to fully extinguish the blaze. Eighty-one homes were completely destroyed with structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, another 81 were partially damaged, 57 were affected by heat but not burned, while 218 homes remained unscathed. — Bernama

Cuepacs supports royal decree for civil servants to remain professional, apolitical
KUALA LUMPUR: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public Service (Cuepacs) expressed supports for His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's decree emphasising that civil servants must be free from the influence of political parties. Its president, Datuk Dr Adnan Mat, said His Majesty's decree emphasised the importance of civil servants upholding the principle of loyalty to the King and Country by performing their duties honestly with truthworthiness. "Cuepacs fully supports the decree of His Majesty who reminded civil servants that they must remain professional and not get involved in political struggles that could undermine service to the people. "Cuepacs believes that civil servants are capable of fulfilling their responsibilities without being influenced by the current political turmoil," he said. Therefore, Adnan urged all civil servants to continue providing quality and effective services to the people and nation, considering they are the backbone of the government's administration and need to act professionally. "Civil servants are reminded to remain free from any political ideology in their efforts to maintain the overall well-being of the country under the patronage of the royal institution. They need to be wise in facing challenges and to ensure that services to the people are not affected, even with changes in the government," he told Bernama on Monday (June 2). His Majesty, in his Royal Address at the Investiture Ceremony for 2025 in conjunction with the King's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara on Monday, also emphasised that civil servants should always prioritise the interests of the nation and people. "Government officials must ensure that every decision made follows the established rules and regulations, not the whims of politicians," His Majesty decreed. Meanwhile, civil servants contacted by Bernama also supported the decree of His Majesty and believed it was very accurate and deserved serious attention. Amira Abdul Halim, 36, an officer at the Home Ministry, said that civil servants should not be influenced by any particular political agenda, as in a mature, democratic country, civil servants are the backbone of an efficient, fair, and transparent national administration. "Maintaining integrity and professionalism in the public service to ensure that the policies implemented are based on the needs of the people and interests of the nation, rather than being influenced by certain political agendas," she said. According to Amira, civil servants must always adhere firmly to work ethics and the value of integrity, with decisions made according to regulations and not political directives, in the interest of good governance to preserve the dignity of the civil service. She said that the principles of the 12 Pillars serve as an ethical guide for civil servants, emphasising 12 core values including valuing time, diligence, enjoyment in work, integrity, responsibility, prudent wisdom, and talent enhancement that must be adhered to. Sultan Ibrahim said that although the government has outlined the conditions for consideration, he will still re-evaluate each proposed candidate. 'In my view, only individuals who have served and rendered service to the government for a long time, or who have brought glory to the country, should be accepted. Indeed, not many pass the conditions every year. Although there are parties who lobby, I will not entertain them. 'The titles of Datuk and Tan Sri are not for sale. If you have a lot of money, do charity, help the poor and needy,' said His Majesty.
