Nelly says he married Ashanti to avoid labeling her a baby mama
Rapper Nelly has revealed that he and R&B star Ashanti decided to marry shortly after learning they were expecting a child — a move he says was motivated by love, respect, and their renewed connection. Speaking on The Bootleg Kev Podcast, Nelly, 50, said that while marriage wasn't initially on the table, he felt it was the right thing to do.
'Let's just knock this out — everything was moving so fast,' Nelly recalled. 'We already knew where we were in life. If we're back like this, this must be what it's supposed to be. I didn't want her to be a baby mama, you know what I mean?'
The couple rekindled their relationship in September 2023 and quietly wed three months later on December 27, as confirmed by court records obtained by People. Their marriage was kept under wraps until June 2024. Ashanti publicly revealed her pregnancy in April 2024 during an interview with Essence, and the couple welcomed their son, Kareem Kenkaide Hayes — known as KK — in July.
During the 2024 Baby2Baby Gala, Ashanti called motherhood 'amazing,' adding, 'He's a blessing. He's an angel. I'm insanely in love with him.'
Balancing motherhood with her career, Ashanti admitted she'll need 'extra hands' while touring with KK, but said she's embracing this new chapter with gratitude and joy.
At the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, Ashanti surprised Nelly by presenting him with the Landmark Award. Reflecting on the moment, Nelly said, 'That's my baby, man. She did her thing.'
Their rekindled romance — once the subject of speculation — has since blossomed into a family story grounded in love, mutual respect, and shared history.

The R&B star performed a smooth medley of her early 2000s hits 'Happy' and 'Foolish,' drawing cheers from the crowd. Jim Jones followed with a high-energy rendition of his anthem 'Ballin',' setting the tone for Amerie's lively recreation of her '1 Thing' dance routine. Elizabeth Weber reemerges after decades for Billy Joel's HBO documentary
Elizabeth Weber, Billy Joel's first wife and longtime former manager, made headlines this week by publicly speaking for the first time in 43 years. The 82-year-old appeared at the premiere of And So It Goes, HBO's new two-part documentary on the music icon, during the 2025 Tribeca Festival in New York. Weber, often referred to as Joel's muse and the inspiration behind several of his classic songs, attended the event with her son Sean Small. Reflecting on her eight-year marriage to Joel, she told People, 'It was great then, it's great whenever I think about it, and it's great now.' The documentary dives deep into Billy Joel's early struggles, creative rise, and personal pain — much of which centered around Elizabeth. The two had a controversial beginning, with Elizabeth initially married to Joel's bandmate Jon Small. Despite the rocky start, she and Joel married in 1973, with Weber becoming a strategic force behind his success. She reportedly pushed him to release 'Just the Way You Are' — a decision that won him two Grammys. Weber also inspired iconic songs such as 'She's Always a Woman' and 'The Stranger.' However, their marriage ended in the early 1980s amid Joel's growing substance issues and a near-fatal motorcycle accident. Now, re-entering public life, Weber says she joined the project after encouragement from her granddaughters and co-director Susan Lacy. Notably absent was Joel, 75, who is recovering from normal pressure hydrocephalus. According to Lacy, he is undergoing physical therapy and is expected to recover fully. Weber's return offers rare insight into a pivotal yet misunderstood chapter of Billy Joel's career and personal life.
