Review: UGREEN 500W 6-Port GaN Fast Desktop Charger is a real beast

The more devices you have in your home, the more chargers you have hanging around. If you're like me you are drowning in cables and plugs - and there's never any around when you need it the most. Or if you do, the sockets are all full! UGREEN has come up with a solution that will charge a bunch of devices at the same time, crucially at high power.
The UGREEN 500W 6-Port GaN Fast Desktop Charger (try saying that three times quickly) is targeted at pros, gamers and tech enthusiasts, but I'll tell you if you've got a family this is going to solve a few arguments!
I'll admit that UGREEN is fast becoming one of my favourite tech brands. Everything I've tested so far feels really rock solid and the desktop charger is no different.
This compact yet hefty (in a good, reassuring way) device comes in a familiar shade of dark grey and allows you to charge six devices at the same time from a single wall socket. It can deliver some 500 watts - to give you an idea what that means, this is enough to support high-performance gaming laptops and even electric bikes. It can charge a 16ins Macbook Pro from 0 to 70% in just one hour.
Essentially this could be a great solution for your home office or gaming room, but it wouldn't look too out of place in your living room either. One end of 'the brick' plugs into the wall and then on the other end you have five USB-C and one USB-A ports to play with.
Not all those USB-C ports are created equal, however, with one having the ability to pump out 240W on its own so you can power something far beyond your average mobile phone. The remaining USB-C ports offer up to 100W each, while the USB-A port delivers up to 22.5W, all while allowing simultaneous charging of multiple devices at full speed.
I'm always a little bit suspicious of the typical multi-socket extension cords that, admittedly, I have scattered around my home. Every so often I spy one and immediately think to myself 'I really hope that is safe'.
In this regard, UGREEN has gone all out. The charger monitors the temperature 100 times per second, making real-time adjustments to maintain optimal operating conditions. While an orientation sensor adds another layer of safety, reducing power output if the charger is tipped over to prevent overheating and protect connected devices.
UGREEN says the charger has 11 protection protocols, including safeguards against over-current, overload, and over-temperature, all housed within a V-0 rated flame-retardant casing.
That's pretty cool. I also found the charger to be cool itself, no matter how many things I had plugged in. This gave me much peace of mind and is probably down to the six embedded GaN chips that deliver an energy conversion rate of up to 95%.
While it's not light, the charger is small enough that you can probably take it away on a family trip. I'd imagine it would be a godsend in a hotel.
Now all this technology doesn't come cheap. It's a high-end charger and is priced accordingly at £219.99. However, at the time of writing you can pick it up on Amazon for £175.99. Still pricey but if you have the need and the money, you can't do much better at the moment.
What users say
"Wowsers this thing is an absolute MONSTER of a charger Let's not mess around, this is a seriously powerful charger with a price tag attached for a reason. If you need to charge multiple power-hungry devices simultaneously then look no further."
"If I had to make any criticisms or suggestions, it would be useful to have LED charging indicators next to the sockets, just a basic LED that lights up when power is bing passed. This would be a useful and quick way to see if your device had finished charging. As it is, the whole body is lacking any kind of illumination, which is kind of odd in a modern device."

Tech experts issue 'juice jacking' warning to never share your phone charger

While asking for a charger from a stranger may seem harmless, it might be something you regret. Technology experts are warning the public against ever accepting a phone charging cable from a stranger. While it may seem a harmless and generous gesture for someone to offer you a charger when you're low on juice, it may actually put your personal information and data at risk. Malicious charging cables are a fast-growing threat facing mobile users, according to security professionals, and it's one that many of us aren't aware of. Known as 'juice jacking', hackers can steal everything from your passwords to your personal photos and information using cables that look identical to legitimate phone chargers. While tampered public charging stations were already a commonly known tech threat, fraudsters have now evolved to target vulnerable individuals with low phone charge when they're out in public. Criminals are creating cables that look identical to genuine Apple or Android products but contain hidden computer chips capable of logging keystrokes, stealing credentials, and even providing remote access to your device. A tech expert from Outplayed explains: "The sophistication of these attacks has reached a truly alarming level. "There's been a massive increase in these cables that are virtually indistinguishable from legitimate Apple products, yet they're essentially miniature computers designed to harvest your data." The USB technology that powers your gadget is also responsible for handling data transfer in your device, which hackers can exploit. When you plug into a malicious cable, it can automatically access your device's contents, often bypassing the security prompts that would normally alert you to data transfer attempts, explained the expert. And that's not all. Recent developments have made these cyber attacks even more dangerous through 'choice jacking' techniques, which can actually confirm data transfer permissions on your behalf without any user interaction. This means even built-in security measures can be dodged by sophisticated malicious hardware used by the cyber crooks. The expert adds: "What makes this particularly concerning is that these cables function perfectly as chargers. "Victims often have no idea they've been compromised until it's too late. The cable charges your phone normally while secretly communicating with attackers over Wi-Fi in the background." It's vital to remain vigilant, as these attacks can happen anywhere– from borrowing a cable at work to using one offered by a well-meaning friend at a coffee shop. Some malicious cables can even simulate keyboard inputs, effectively typing commands into your phone without your knowledge. The security professionals advise phone owners to always use their own charging cable and adapter, especially in public spaces like airports or hotels. If you must charge in public, stick to wall outlets with your own equipment rather than USB charging stations. For added security, consider investing in a USB data blocker - a cheap adapter that physically prevents data transfer while allowing charging current to flow. These small devices create a barrier between your phone and potentially malicious cables. If you're looking to invest in one, there are plenty of options, such as this ' anti-juice jacker ' on Amazon for a tenner, or this one on Currys for £3.99. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! In-flight power bank rules 2025: What every traveller needs to know

If you've ever panicked at 35,000 feet over a dead phone, you're not alone. But travellers, take note: airlines are tightening rules around portable chargers and power banks, and it's worth knowing the latest before you pack your carry-on. Corporate Traveller South Africa warns that popular carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Scoot, China Airlines, Thai Airways, Korean Airlines, and Asiana Airlines have updated their in-flight battery policies this year. For South African travellers, Emirates is introducing one of the biggest changes: from 1 October 2025, passengers can still carry a power bank onboard, but it cannot be used to charge devices in-flight. Herman Heunes, GM of Corporate Traveller SA, explains that the move is all about safety. 'As power banks become more popular, airlines like Emirates have had to review their rules to ensure the highest safety standards for all travellers,' he says. Emirates power bank rules at a glance Only one power bank under 100 Watt Hours is allowed per passenger. In-flight charging of devices from a power bank is prohibited. Charging a power bank from the aircraft's power supply is not permitted. Power banks must have clear capacity information displayed. Store power banks in your seat pocket or under the seat, not in overhead bins. Checked luggage is still off-limits for portable chargers. Tips for staying connected while flying Check your airline's policy before travelling. Rules vary and can change quickly. Charge devices fully before your flight and top up at airport charging stations. Pack a USB charging cord; most long-haul flights have USB ports for direct device charging. Choose the right device; tablets are easier to charge in-flight than laptops and still give you a big screen. Use in-flight entertainment systems where available to save your device battery. Be cautious with public USB ports at airports; they can be a cyber risk. Purchase certified power banks from reputable brands to ensure safety. Always carry power banks in your cabin bag — never in checked luggage. 'More and more airlines are introducing restrictions on using and charging portable devices in the aircraft,' says Heunes. 'It's better to be forewarned, as we expect all carriers to follow suit.'
