Demi Lovato gets sultry in return to music with new single 'Fast': Lyrics, music video
Demi Lovato is back in the studio – and she's offering a sultry new song for the summer. On "Fast," Lovato's new single out Aug. 1, the celebrated vocalist opts for a more electronic sound, blending sensual lyrics with a hot-and-heavy synth. Up-tempo keyboards and a suspenseful beat drop make for a new experience of Lovato's soaring vibrato, perhaps providing a hint to the genre of the larger album expected to follow the single's release. "I wanna go fast / I wanna go hard / I wanna go anywhere, anywhere you are," she croons, leaning into a dance-pop sound different from the rock and soul-inspired projects she's dropped more recently. "Fast" marks her first new music since 2023's "Revamped," which remixed many of the songs from her early pop days to have a more rock n' roll sound. "Holy Fv--," the singer's most recent original album, released in 2022, was a pure rock project. Now, Lovato is teaming up with Zhone, a Grammy-nominated writer and producer, who has helped engineer the sound of recent Charli XCX and Kesha projects. The partnership may signal a return to her pop roots. In 2022, Lovato seemed to hint at the end of her long-time tie with the genre, posting on her Instagram at the time: "A funeral for my pop music," alongside a photo of her holding up a middle finger. But she's back now with a dancier beat – and a literal resurrection of the genre. "Fast" echoes the feel of "Cool for the Summer," another anthem for the hotter months with a synth-pop feel, which Lovato released a little over a decade ago. "It's been so inspiring working with Demi and experiencing her journey of continued leveling up," Zhone told Rolling Stone in a July 21 interview. "She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music! It really comes across throughout." In the accompanying music video, also out Aug. 1, Lovato struts through a street literally on fire, channeling the hot, sweaty mess of a dance floor, and providing the background music to match.

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Demi Lovato released her new song "Fast," alongside an accompanying music video Thursday. The music video begins as the singer, 32, walks confidently down a dark street. "I'm not so sure, I've ever felt like this before," she sings. She continues walking and singing, seemingly unfazed by weight-lifiting men, an exploding car and a nun smoking a cigarette. Her husband Jordan Lutes offered his support of her work on Instagram, commenting on her post announcing the latest drop. "Beyond proud of you baby," he wrote. "This song and video are insane." The song will appear on her upcoming album. "She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music! It really comes across throughout," Zhone, who executive produces the project, told Rolling Stone. Demi Lovato's 10 best songs of all time, ranked
Demi wants to go 'Fast,' and we're in. - YouTube If there were a Mount Rushmore for Disney Channel stars, here's who that would include: Miley Cyrus (duh!), Selena Gomez, Raven-Symoné, and of course, Demi Lovato. Each of these people/performers has done more for the Disney Channel brand than any other actor, but Lovato still managed to stand out — from her starring role as Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock, to becoming an unshakable pop star, to navigating mental health issues in the public eye, to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights as an out gender fluid person. The reason Lovato has been able to stand the test of time is not only due to her vocal prowess, but also her ability to transform herself and take risks that pay off in the long run. On her debut album, Don't Forget, Lovato took the pop-punk route with tunes that expertly blended her formidable singing voice with catchy lyrics and a clean rock aesthetic. Over the years, she tried her hand at several different genres, including electro-pop, R&B, EDM, pure pop, and rock. This Friday, Lovato released a new song, "Fast," which already has fans calling it a new contender for song of the summer. It's been a long time coming in the lead-up to "Fast" — her first song as a solo artist since dropping the tracks from 2022's HOLY FVCK. In honor of the new single, here's a definitive ranking of Lovato's best songs of all time. 10. 'La La Land' - YouTube Those who watched Disney Channel know that Lovato had pipes, but we rarely got to see them used in this way. She busted out a full belt on a rock song about working through body image issues as a teenager and the success of the song proved that it was the perfect mix of her staggeringly apt singing talents while speaking to issues that real teens were dealing with at the time (and even today). 9. 'Skyscraper' - YouTube "Skyscraper" is Lovato's earliest self-described "cry for help" song, which she'll go on to release more of. But in 2011, the pop star lifted the veil and told her fans that she wasn't okay. She'd opened up about dealing with addiction, eating disorders, and self-harming, the first time we've seen a child star of her caliber be so candid about fighting these battles. Lovato provided the self-empowerment ballad of the year with "Skyscraper," and her emotional delivery of the song, combined with her killer vocals, made this all the more powerful. 8. 'Stone Cold' - YouTube There are so few that depict the anguish of heartbreak and watching your lover move on, like Lovato does. Her audience responds to the heartbreaking ballads, where she paints a vivid picture of seeing someone date someone new. "Stone Cold" shows off her lower register as well as her ability to mix those gut-wrenching emotions into a poignant song. This song easily puts Lovato on the list of insanely talented balladeers. 7. 'Two Pieces' - YouTube "Two Pieces" is a propulsive track, where we see Lovato begging her lover to make things work on this pop-rock anthem. The song starts out with a drum and piano-assisted intro, which builds as she sets listeners into the song's setting. When the song hits the refrain and chorus, it explodes and it's filled with an electric guitar as she belts, "These dark clouds over me, rain down and roll away / We'll never fall apart, 'cause we fit together like / Two pieces of a broken heart." 6. 'Cool for the Summer' - YouTube I'll say it: Some of Lovato's down-the-middle pop music doesn't work for me. However, "Cool for the Summer" is a song in a lane all of it's own. This song is addictive, fresh, and grabs the listener by the collar of their shirt to take them on a ride they want to get on over and over. It's about letting go of your inhibitions, taking the dive into something exciting, and worrying about the repercussions later. It also combines all of the best parts of Lovato's talents, like her insanely skilled vocal agility and her chameleonic demeanor — which she can switch up for whatever the song she's singing needs. Are the lyrics a bit odd? Well, yes. But does the production completely overshadow the lyrics so they don't really matter in the long run? Also yes! 5. 'Happy Ending' - YouTube There are many standout tracks from Lovato's 2022 project, HOLY FVCK, but I feel in my heart of hearts that "Happy Ending" is the most underrated track on the LP. In fact, she doesn't hold back in the slightest on this album, in a way that we haven't gotten from her in years prior. In this song, Lovato wonders: "Am I gonna die trying to find my happy ending?" Knowing that Lovato has battled mental health struggles, addiction, and self-harm, it's a breath of fresh air to hear her being this candid while sharing her side of the story. For instance, she addresses the pressures of being a public figure who is actively fighting addiction. "Sure, I'm sober now / And everybody's proud / But I miss my vices," she sings. "And I tried to be your hero / I lent you my voice / I was your poster child / It was working for a while / But it didn't fill the void." As her fellow Disney alum once said, "Nobody's perfect" and talking about it with such candor works leaps and bounds better than trying to smile through the pain. 4. 'Substance' - YouTube "Substance" followed "Skin of My Teeth," thus serving as the second single to HOLY FVCK. Those two songs gave fans a clear warning: This album was going to be a no-holds-barred, cathartic release for Lovato, returning to her pop-punk roots. The last time Lovato truly dabbled in the rock aesthetic was in her early solo music career days as she began to make a name for herself outside of Disney. The rock sound might be tangled up in her web of trauma with her teenage years, but Lovato took the opportunity by the horns and went full force with a song like "Substance." She looked back at her life, saw its most challenging moments, and decided to make lemonade out of lemons — an album with substance. 3. 'Here We Go Again' - YouTube You don't have to be a 16-year-old girl to understand exactly what Lovato was going through when she sang "Here We Go Again." It's a perfect pop-rock song about wanting to forget about a guy (or person) who's done you wrong. She's not meek nor mousy. She roars over the blaring guitars and drums, wishing the guy the best but also wishing he would just get out of her life and out from under her skin. "Here We Go Again" was the lead single off her second album, completely annihilating any predictions of a sophomore slump after the song hit No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. 2. 'Anyone' - YouTube On this track, we hear something that we don't usually get from the pop star: imperfection—not only in the lyrical content, but in her vocal performance. Lovato has never sounded bad a day in her life, and this song is no different. But, as she's trying to keep it together and get through the song, you can hear her voice wavering, and she sounds like she's holding back tears as she unleashes this pent-up frustration and anger that she's dealt with while battling her inner demons. "Anyone, please send me anyone," she cries out to God, hoping he's listening. "Lord, is there anyone? I need someone." Lovato's had a tumultuous battle with addiction and mental health struggles, and in 2018, she suffered a near-fatal overdose — four days after she recorded the song. She took some time away from the spotlight, and her first public performance of this song was at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Everyone can see the cracks in the facade that she's been putting up for years. 1. '29' - YouTube Lovato is at her best when she's reflective because she's had to do it so much throughout her life. She's spoken about the mistreatment she's faced as a child, but rarely do we get something as shrewd and sharp as this. "29" is an unflinching look at a long-term relationship with a man, where she talks about feeling like she was manipulated and groomed. The song finds her at the age of her alleged groomer, whom many speculated to be her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama. The pair met when she was 17 and he was 29, but didn't publicly share that they were dating until she was 18. The lyrics pierce as Lovato looks back on the relationship, "Just five years a bleeder, student and a teacher / far from innocent, what the fuck's consent? / Numbers told you not to, but that didn't stop you," she sings through gritted teeth. "Finally 29 / funny just like you were at the time / Thought it was a teenage dream, just a fantasy / But was it yours, was it mine?" She sings as if she's digging the knife right through the perpetrator and digging it in deeper with each line. HOLY FVCK is her best album, lyrically and vocally, and you'd be hard pressed to find a song as devastating as this. Demi Lovato Releases New Single "Fast," First from Upcoming Album
Yara Sameh Demi Lovato is back and ready for life in the fast lane. The "Child Star" director released her latest single 'Fast' on Thursday night, the first from her upcoming ninth studio album. Lovato teased the track on social media earlier this month before officially announcing its arrival. In one mid-July Instagram video, the singer-actress lip-synced to the lyrics of the track, singing, ''Cause baby honestly / I just wanna feel your hands all over me / Over and over / Right where they wanna be / Even if it's only for tonight.' Lovato released an accompanying music video with the track, where she could be seen amongst a slate of burning cars while singing the chorus: 'I wanna go fast / I wanna go hard / I wanna go anywhere, anywhere you are.' Entitled 'Fast,' the single marks Lovato's return to the pop music genre after she'd previously tapped into rock in her previous record Holy Fvck. Her ninth album will be executive produced by music producer Zhone, who has notably collaborated with Kesha, Troye Sivan and Charli xcx. 'It's been so inspiring working with Demi and experiencing her journey of continued leveling up,' Zhone told Rolling Stone . 'She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music! It really comes across throughout.' The Camp Rock star's most recent release was Revamped, which literally revamped and remixed tracks from her sprawling discography. 'Fast's' arrival comes almost a year after Lovato made her directorial debut with her documentary Child Star, which shed light on 'the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world's most well-known former child stars.' The doc featured interview with Drew Barrymore, JoJo Siwa, Christina Ricci, Kenan Thompson, Raven-Symoné and Alyson Stoner, among others. Demi Lovato releases Fast as lead single from upcoming ninth album
Demi Lovato has officially returned to the pop music scene with the release of her latest single, Fast, which debuted Thursday night. The track is the lead single from her forthcoming ninth studio album and marks a stylistic shift back to pop following her previous rock-inspired record, Holy Fvck. Lovato began teasing Fast in mid-July on Instagram, where she lip-synced lyrics from the track, building anticipation among fans: ''Cause baby honestly / I just wanna feel your hands all over me…' The full music video expands on the track's fiery energy, showing Lovato strutting among burning cars while singing the high-octane chorus: 'I wanna go fast / I wanna go hard / I wanna go anywhere, anywhere you are.' Lovato's return to pop will be shaped by producer Zhone, known for collaborations with Kesha, Troye Sivan, and Charli XCX. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Zhone praised her evolution as an artist, saying, 'She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music!' Fast follows Lovato's 2023 project Revamped, which reimagined past hits from her discography with updated production. Her return to music also comes nearly a year after her directorial debut with Child Star, a documentary that explored the challenges of growing up in the spotlight. The project featured interviews with Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci, JoJo Siwa, and other former child stars. Lovato recently married musician Jordan 'Jutes' Luts, adding another personal milestone as she steps into a new era of artistry.
