How Bolton is supporting the town's - and the country's
Since its launch in 2014, the Gold Award has become the highest badge of honour for employers that champion veterans, reservists, cadet force adult volunteers and military families in the workplace.
The scheme recognises employers who go above and beyond in supporting defence to renew the nation's contract with those who serve or have served.

To achieve the Gold Award, employers must:
provide at least 10 days' additional paid leave for reservists
implement HR policies for veterans and cadet force adult volunteers
advocate for defence across their networks and sectors
demonstrate sustained commitment well beyond the minimum requirements
As well as establishing an internal, cross-council Armed Forces Network for veterans and facilitating events throughout the year to celebrate those who make up the community, the council continues to make sure it meets its responsibilities and actively promotes the Armed Forces Covenant.
Bolton Council Leader, Cllr Nick Peel, said: 'We are all incredibly proud to receive the prestigious Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.
'This award recognises that we deliver on our promise to honour the service of our armed forces, and that we do what we can to help our veterans, and their families.
'Bolton Council is proud to support the armed forces and make sure those who serve feel respected and looked after.'
Cllr Ryan Bamforth, Bolton Council's Armed Forces Champion, said: 'Bolton has always had a strong connection with the armed forces community, and we are immensely proud to accept the Gold Award for the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
'As someone with 20 years' service in the British Army, I know how important it is that we support our veterans and their families, as well as reservists and everyone involved in the Cadet movement.
'As Bolton Council's Armed Forces Champion I will ensure we keep up this excellent work so all members of the armed forces community feel valued, respected and looked after.'

William and Kate are moving to eight-bedroom Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, with their children George, Charlotte and Louis. As heir to the throne, William inherited the Duchy of Cornwall estate, a portfolio of land, property and investments valued at more than £1 billion, when his father became King. According to The Sun, Forest Lodge would be worth about £16m on the open market. The freehold is owned by the King.

HMRC confirms change that will give taxpayers lower interest rates in days
HMRC has announced the dates its new interest rates will take effect. Depending on the payment plan used by taxpayers, the dates for the diary were August 18 and 27. The change follows the Bank of England's recent base rate cut, the Mirror reports. It will drop from 4.25 per cent to four per cent, marking the lowest it has been since March 2023. The base rate sets the tone for interest rates for building societies and banks. It impacts everyone from savers to homeowners, credit card holders and HMRC. Changes to HMRC's interest rates will affect those making late tax payments or receiving repayments on their bill. The current interest rates charged on these payments stand at 8.25 per cent and 3.25 per cent respectively. The late payment interest rate, which is calculated as the base rate plus four per cent, will drop to eight per cent following the Bank of England's change. Repayment interest rates, calculated as the base rate minus one per cent, will now drop to three per cent. The interest rates for quarterly instalment payments will fall on August 18. Meanwhile non-quarterly instalment payments will not benefit from the new rates until August 27. The interest rates were designed to incentivise people to pay tax on time and avoid the late payment interest. The repayment rate aims to fairly compensate taxpayers for any loss incurred due to overpayments. Late payment interest rates hit a record high of 8.5 per cent earlier this year - a level not seen since February 2000, according to HMRC data.

How CAS ruling will affect Crystal Palace in the transfer window
Crystal Palace's hopes of competing in the Europa League this season are over, and the news could have a seismic impact on the club. The competition is far less prestigious and financially rewarding than the Europa League. The demotion could cost Palace around £20 million in lost revenue. That could have made a world of difference for the Eagles in the transfer market. Without Europa League football, Palace may struggle to attract their key targets as they now have less bargaining power to fend off competition. The verdict also couldn't have come at a worse time for the club. The Eagles are fighting to keep their star players at Selhurst Park, with Eberechi Eze and captain Marc Guehi drawing interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, respectively. There was never any guarantee that the promise of Europa League football would be enough to convince them to stay. Playing in the Europa Conference League holds no weight, considering that a move guarantees them Champions League football.
