Blitzbok coach Philip Snyman feels the mission to build depth in South Africa's Sevens ranks is well on track after the Springbok Sevens 'A' squad claimed the Rugby Africa Sevens Cup in Port Louis, Mauritius, on Sunday.
They beat Madagascar 26-12 in the final at Labourdonnais Sports Club. Earlier on Sunday, they overcame Zimbabwe 19-12 in the semi-finals and defending champions Uganda 26-0 in the quarter-finals.
'This was a good effort, and I am happy with the way the squad applied themselves and executed their duties,' said Snyman.
'We had eight players who are uncapped at HSBC SVNS level and they all fitted into the system and the team as the tournament took shape. We wanted to give those players proper match time, as it does take a tournament or three before you are ready for the world series, and they responded well.
Sebastiaan Jobb (with ball) helped lead the Springbok Sevens 'A' squad to glory at the Rugby Africa Sevens tournament in Mauritius at the weekend. He praised the tournament as a platform to blood new players.

'The African teams are very physical, which is always a tough challenge, and then we encountered Madagascar – who play like Fiji with their offloads – in the final, so that was a valuable learning curve for the new players.'
Snyman admitted that the display was far from flawless, despite going unbeaten. The Springbok Sevens 'A' side started sluggishly in the pool stage, opening with a cagey 17-5 win over Nigeria.
The experience of co-captains Mfundo Ndhlovu and Sebastiaan Jobb then came to the fore. Two tries in quick succession by Ndhlovu broke Zambia's resistance in a 33-14 win. Jobb followed that with a hat-trick in the 31-0 win over Burkina Faso in the final pool match.
'It definitely was not perfect, but we got the answers that we came to get out of this tournament. So I think it was a good tournament, especially with all the youngsters that we had, building depth in our squad,' Snyman said.
'One of our objectives was to build depth in the team and give the youngsters the opportunity to play and to know exactly what it is and how it feels to play in a world series event. That's what we achieved out of this weekend. There were a lot of mistakes, but a lot of positives, too.'

Time for Change in Banyana Banyana's Leadership as coach Desiree Ellis struggles to run a watertight ship

RESPECTED Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has been criticised of appeasing Safa insteda of fighting for her players. | BackpagePix The winds of change must blow within the senior national women's team set-up. It is clear that the binder that is supposed to hold the structure together has lost its bearings. Desiree Ellis achieved the improbable with Banyana Banyana over the years, and for that, the nation will always worship the ground she walks on. Perhaps, if it wasn't for her, Banyana wouldn't be regarded as one of the powerhouses of African football today as many came and failed before her! Under Ellis' tutelage, the SA women's national team broke barriers, won their maiden Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and qualified for back-to-back World Cup finals. Perhaps, if it wasn't for her, some childhood dreams wouldn't have been realised and lives of some individuals and families wouldn't have been changed. And so, given all that she's done and more, she's duly befitting of all the recognition that she's received, including the coveted Order of Ikhamanga and Honourary Doctorate. But as rousing as that may have been, Banyana's unsavoury fourth-place finish at recent WAFCON and allegations against Ellis don't mitigate that her time is up. Judging by the team's performances during their preparations of the teams on home soil and external, few believed that they'd achieve the improbable and retain their title in Morocco. And instead of making sure the team made their naysayers eat humble pie - as everyone tends to love a twist in the tale - Banyana played right into the critics and finished fourth. Sure, losing is part and parcel of the game as even the reigning and 10-time champions Nigeria also finished fourth when Banyana triumphed in 2022. But what's worrisome and adds fuel to the fire of Banyana's poor run at WAFCON, is the revelation of Jermaine Seoposenwe during a recent interview on Marawa Sport Worldwide.

WATCH: Keyboard-playing Angelo Davids is dancing to a special tune for the Lions

Former Blitzboks speedster Angelo Davids is loving life at the Lions. Image: Backpagepix When nobody is watching, Lions wing Angelo Davids plays the keyboard in his room. But on the field, he plays a different tune with ball in hand. We saw that last week when the former Western Province man dazzled the Sharks' defence to score two tries and announce to the rugby world that there is vibrant rugby life for him outside of Cape Town. 'It was a great start for me, personally, which is what I wanted,' Davids said of his emphatic start to his Lions career. 'But that is in the past. It is a new week and a new game (against Western Province). I have to focus on my principles to get better.' The Lions like to give the ball air, and former Blitzbok Davids says this suits his style of play. 'I 100 percent enjoy the way the Lions play,' Davids said. 'But it also helps to get game time, and I didn't get a lot of that in Cape Town. The more you play, the more opportunity you have to perform.' Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading Davids understands that he has big boots to fill in that he is taking over from Springbok Edwill van der Merwe, who has moved to the Sharks. 'Edwill is a heck of a player, but I need to do what I need to do to become the best,' he said. 'I need to keep going, doing the small things behind the scenes when nobody is watching. That is what counts. I need to keep grinding away to become the best I can be.' Davids' old team, WP, are blooding youngsters, as is the norm for the big unions in the Currie Cup, and that makes them dangerous in the eyes of the 26-year-old. 'They are a threat because we don't know a lot of their guys, so we need to focus on ourselves to be successful on the weekend. We must get our principles right and nail our detail. 'Province will be hungry because they lost at the weekend (to the Bulls), so they will come out firing. We must stay calm and relaxed, and do what we need to do.' On a personal level, Davids says he needs to be the best version of himself. 'My goal is to become the best Angelo Davids. To do that, I need to perform the best I can on and off the field. I must make sure I do my recovery right and get my detail right. I must do what I know I can do to improve in every way.' Away from rugby, Davids says he retreats into a musical world. 'I love playing the keyboard when I want to take a break from rugby. I go into my room and play worship music, and relax my mind. That is what I love doing.' Ultimately, he knows he has to pay back the Lions for their trust in him. 'The Lions got me to Johannesburg to do a job. They signed me because they know what I can do, and I need to deliver on the rugby field.'
