Mets place catcher Francisco Alvarez on injured list with thumb sprain
The move was retroactive to Monday and deprives the Mets of a power bat as they seek to solidify their playoff position.
Alvarez was hurt sliding into second base during Sunday night's victory over Seattle in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He did not travel with the team for Tuesday's series opener at Washington, instead returning to New York to be evaluated.
The Mets said Alvarez would be re-evaluated in 10 to 14 days for a potential return.
Since his return from a monthlong stint in the minors, Alvarez is batting .323 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 21 games.
The Mets recalled catcher Hayden Sanger from Triple-A Syracuse. New York also released right-hander Paul Blackburn.
The big-spending Mets have struggled in August to fall 5 1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East entering Tuesday. They had a one-game lead over Cincinnati for the final NL wild-card spot.

Andrew Saalfrank pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. McCarthy's homer opened the scoring in the third. Carroll tripled and scored on a groundout by Gurriel in the fourth. Carlos Santana singled to drive in José Ramírez and then scored on a single by Nolan Jones in the Cleveland fourth. Ramírez hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Tim Herrin (4-3) gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss. Yankees tie club record with 9 home runs in 13-3 win over Rays

(AP) — Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger both hit two home runs, Aaron Judge launched his 40th of the season and the New York Yankees matched a franchise record with nine longballs Tuesday night in a 13-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Judge, Bellinger and Stanton went back-to-back-to-back in the first inning to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead four batters into the game — after the first pitch was delayed nearly two hours by rain. José Caballero connected twice for his first career multihomer game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ben Rice also went deep for the Yankees, who won their fourth straight and looked awfully comfortable in a road game at their spring training home. New York took full advantage of the cozy dimensions before a crowd of 10,046 at George M. Steinbrenner Field, where the Rays are playing while Tropicana Field undergoes repairs. Bellinger finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs. Following the long rain delay, Shane Baz (8–10) gave up Judge's 429-foot shot to center field. San Diego snaps losing streak with strong performance from Nick Pivetta
Nick Pivetta allowed a leadoff home run to Jung Hoo Lee that saw the San Francisco Giants jump out to a 1-0 lead over the San Diego Padres after two pitches. That was the only run he or any other Padres pitcher allowed as San Diego earned a 5-1 win at Petco Park, Tuesday. Pivetta did what the Friar Faithful have come to expect from his starts, working deep into the game, limiting hits and allowing minimal runs. Pivetta completed six innings and gave up the lone run on three hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. His performance helped the Padres snap a four-game skid. The San Diego offense wasted no time in responding to the leadoff home run and plated a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on an error to start the bottom half of the inning and moved to third on a double by Luis Arraez. Manny Machado brought Tatis Jr. home with an RBI-groundout, which was just Machado's second RBI in August. The Padres took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan O'Hearn singled to open the frame. Xander Bogaerts was hit by a pitch and Ramon Laureano grounded into a fielder's choice. With one out, Gavin Sheets was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jose Iglesias broke a 1-1 tie with a line drive single into left field that gave San Diego a 2-1 lead. The Padres tacked on a second run in the inning when Tatis Jr. worked a two-out walk to push the lead to 3-1. O'Hearn impacted the San Diego offense in the bottom of the fifth after Machado doubled to center field to start the inning. O'Hearn followed with a hard-hit single to right-center field that allowed Machado to score from second to give the Padres a 4-1 lead. San Diego scored its final run of the game when Arraez grounded into a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth with runners on the corners. Tatis Jr. was forced out at second base, but Elias Diaz scored from third base to give the Padres a 5-1 lead. The San Diego offense was led by Machado and O'Hearn, who each recorded two hits, scored a run and had an RBI. Five other Padres recorded a hit in the game. The San Diego bullpen arms of Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez worked the final three innings of the game and combined to allow just one hit and recorded two strikeouts. The Padres play the Giants, Wednesday at 6:40 p.m.
