Toto Wolff in 'truly stupid' warning as Ferrari make eye-catching contract decision
Ferrari would have been "truly stupid" to consider replacing Frederic Vasseur as team principal. That is the view of rival team boss Toto Wolff who made it clear he is delighted to see the Frenchman continue in the role after news of his new contract.
Vasseur had been the subject of intense speculation over his future in the Italian media. It was reported by some newspapers in the European country that Ferrari were lining up potential replacements with his contract expiring at the end of this year.
But the team has now put an end to that talk by handing the Frenchman a multi-year contract extension. He is seen as an important part of the project to get back to the very front of the Formula 1 grid with executive chairman John Elkann adamant that only "a collective effort" will put them back on top.
Vasseur is a popular figure in the F1 paddock and well-respected by his peers. He has an especially strong relationship with Mercedes chief Wolff and was the best man at the Austrian's wedding to F1 Academy boss Susie Wolff.
Reacting to news of the new contract for his friend at Ferrari, Wolff made clear his belief that any other course of action would have been a big mistake by the Italian team, which is in the midst of a long F1 title drought stretching back to the 2008 season.
He said: "Any other choice would have been truly stupid. I have known Fred since we were in our early 20s and I know his value as a motorsports man. I know his entrepreneurial vision and his strength. Having someone like him on your team is a blessing, and you have to remember how much time it takes, in F1, to create a successful project."
News of Vasseur's new deal was also happily received by both Ferrari drivers. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had both made it clear during the height of those rumours doubting the boss' long-term future that they did not want to see him replaced.
And, responding to confirmation of the Frenchman's new contract, Hamilton said: "I am always positive about Fred, and I have told everyone that. I told you before it was the right choice.

Fred signed me here. He is completely different to Toto but in terms of characters they are both massive racers. The real positive when I worked with Toto was how he was able to utilise individuals and figure out how people work best and how to get the most out of someone.
"For me, he created me with freedom to be able to express myself the way I wanted to and that enabled me to be the best version of myself. Fred is similar in that respect. I am still trying to learn the way he works. But I have absolute confidence in Fred, as I have always said."

Oliver Glasner fires Crystal Palace warning as Arsenal sent Eberechi Eze message
Oliver Glasner's Crystal Palace contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026 and there is also some uncertainty over the futures of star men Eberechi Eze and Oliver Glasner Oliver Glasner has indicated Crystal Palace's transfer business will shape whether he signs a contract extension. The Austrian insists there are currently "no negotiations" over fresh terms with his existing deal set to expire in 2026. Glasner admitted the Eagles, who will learn the outcome of their Europa League appeal with CAS on Monday, have been "quite passive" in the market having only brought in backup goalkeeper Walter Benitez and left-back Borna Sosa. When asked if Palace transfer dealings - or lack of - could impact his future, he said: "We will see." The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss also refused to provide any assurances Arsenal target Eberechi Eze will be staying put. Quizzed on whether there was confidence Eze would remain with the club beyond the September 1 deadline, Glasner replied: "He will play on Sunday, definitely and Marc [Guehi] as well - he will captain the team." England international centre-back Guehi is also now into the final 12 months of his contract in south east London. Liverpool are monitoring his situation closely while Newcastle and Tottenham have previously seen bids rejected. The FA Cup-winning boss insists Guehi will ultimately decide what happens next. He explained: "Marc and me, we have the same fate but I can't speak on behalf of Marc. In the end, it's always the player's decision and Marc will decide his future. "Of course, everybody wants Marc to sign a new contract, everybody who is connected to Crystal Palace at least. Everybody wants to keep the squad together because they did so well last season. "But again, I don't know how often this happens here at Palace, keeping your top 15 to 16 players going into a new season when you've performed that well. That's also a great achievement for the club but you never know what happens in this sometimes crazy transfer market." Glasner is hoping for two new additions, a defender and forward after striker Eddie Nketiah was ruled out for up to three months with a hamstring injury. The striker will miss two months of action while he works on his recovery but Glasner feels he'll also need four extra weeks to get up to speed with winger Matheus Franca and right-back Caleb Kporha also sidelined with fitness issued. The 50-year-old said: "It's not that I want investment, it's about Crystal Palace. My expertise and my advice is what Crystal Palace should do to be competitive in four competitions. If somebody thinks that's nonsense, okay, let's see." Glasner did, however, rule out a move for Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling and made it clear that Palace's uncertain European future had no impact on their pursuit of transfer targets.

Man Utd star set for immediate exit once £74m Benjamin Sesko deal is completed
Man United are set to complete a deal for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko and his arrival could open to door to a major exit from Old Trafford ahead of the new season Rasmus Hojlund's Manchester United nightmare may well end once Benjamin Sesko is signed. The RB Leipzig star is set to complete a sensational move to Old Trafford imminently. The Red Devils have agreed a £74m deal with his current side, and Sesko has flown to the UK to undergo a medical with United. Once a deal is rubber-stamped, that could see the door opened to Hojlund exiting Old Trafford. Italian side AC Milan hold an interest in the Danish striker and, according to Corriere dello Sport, have flown to the UK to hold talks. It is suggested that the Red Devils are keen to send Hojlund out on loan. Milan would happily take the striker on a temporary deal but want a £30m option to buy inserted into any arrangement. That would represent a huge loss on the £72m that United spent to sign Hojlund from Italian side Atalanta in 2023. The 22-year-old has gone on to score 26 goals in 95 appearances in all competitions since then. While United are open to letting him leave, Hojlund has made his preference very clear - to stay in Manchester. Speaking on the club's pre-season tour, he said:"I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. "I'm still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I'm only 22. Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22 (like Erling Haaland). "But I've learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. I'm starting to develop and become even better in the basics. Now it's just about for me to sharpen myself and I've done very well in the pre-season so far. Just focusing on continuing that. "Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team." Hojund has three years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford but will fall down the pecking order once Sesko is signed. The Slovenian scored 21 goals in all competitions last term for Leipzig. His signing is all part of a big recruitment drive from Ruben Amorim's side as they attempt to add more goals following a dire campaign last time out. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have both already been signed for a combined £133m. United begin their Premier League campaign against Arsenal at Old Trafford in just over a week's time. Before that, they take on Italian side Fiorentina in their final pre-season game of the summer.

Hannah Hampton reveals she threw away Spain's notes in Euros shootout
England's goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has revealed how she threw the water bottle of Spain's Cata Coll into the stands – ditching its tactical notes – as the Lionesses went on to complete a penalty shootout win in the European Championship final. Hampton had England's insider information written on a piece of paper taped to her left arm and she made stops from Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmatí before Chloe Kelly scored the decisive kick as the Lionesses retained the trophy. The 24-year-old admitted she took the opportunity to try to negate any impact Spain's penalty research might have. Coll still saved efforts from Beth Mead and Leah Williamson during the shootout, which England won 3-1. 'The Spanish keeper had it on her bottle,' Hampton told TalkSport. 'So I thought when she was going in goal I'll just pick it up and throw it into the English fans so she can't have it.' The Chelsea player added: 'I never put it on a bottle because anyone can do that, so that is why I put it on my arm, and the TV caught that. It wasn't hard – when she has gone in the goal it [the bottle] is on its own, isn't it? It is in a towel, you just pick it up. 'Mine is blank, but it has the same sponsors and stuff so I just put mine in there, chucked her one into the fans and she had an empty bottle. She was looking for where it is. She was walking back and I was walking the other way. She was so confused. I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing [because] I was like: 'Oh, I don't know where it has gone' … but you have got to do something haven't you?' England also came through a dramatic penalty shootout win over Sweden en route to Euros glory, in which both sides failed to convert spot-kicks at crucial moments. Hampton described that shootout as 'traumatic' and 'horrendous'. She said: 'Before the games we as a keeper group have meetings and we analyse every penalty that each individual from the opposing team has had. I think Alexia [Putellas] had 46 penalties we had to sit there and watch.
