J&K students association asks Karnataka CM to intervene

BENGALURU: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, seeking immediate action over an alleged case of religious discrimination at Sri Soubhagya Lalitha College of Nursing in Banashankari, affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).
According to the association, several Kashmiri female students have been barred from attending classes for wearing the hijab or burkha. In a letter to the CM on Tuesday, the JKSA alleged that the students have faced repeated harassment over several days, being denied entry into classrooms and practical sessions and threatened with expulsion if they continued to wear their religious attire.
Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the JKSA, stated that the college chairman ordered hijab-wearing students to leave immediately. When questioned the directive, they said, 'This is our college; only our rules apply.' The chairman and principal allegedly warned the students that further defiance could result in termination and withholding of academic records.

Play ‘depicting burqa-clad women as terrorists' at I-Day event in Gujarat school kicks up a row

A play staged during the Independence Day programme at a municipal corporation school in Bhavnagar city, Gujarat, on August 15 has triggered a controversy over the alleged depiction of burqa-clad women as 'terrorists'. Bhavnagar District Education Officer (DEO) Hitendrasinh D Padheriya on Tuesday sent a notice to Bhavnagar Municipal School Board Administrative Officer (AO) Munjal Badmaliya seeking a factual report within seven days on the programme held at the school, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Pratmik Shala Number 51 in Kumbharwada area of Bhavnagar city. The notice was issued based on the representation made by a social organisation, Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar, which alleged that the play 'depicted the Muslim community as terrorists' and demanded stern action against the 'teachers behind the play'. In the notice sent to Bhavnagar Municipal School Board Administrative Officer (AO) Munjal Badmaliya, the DEO sought details of the cultural programme at the school and asked whether the depiction as stated in the representation was intentional or unintentional, along with details of the function held on the school campus. Confirming the development, Padheriya told The Indian Express, 'The representation, marked to the District Collector, Municipal Commissioner and DEO on Monday, stated that there was a deliberate depiction of muslims as terrorists during the cultural programme held at the school on August 15. To find out facts and details, I have sought an explanation from the Administrative Officer within seven days.' The all-girls school in Bhavnagar with an enrollment of more than 600 students has come under spotlight after videos of the cultural programme appeared on social media. In its representation, Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar alleged 'an attempt by the school staff to hurt religious sentiments and spread unrest in the public'. 'At Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Prathmik Shala Number 50-51 in Bhavnagar's Kumbharwada area, a play was presented by the children….. In this play, Kashmiri pilgrims as well as the Army and terrorists were depicted. In the play, girls dressed in Muslim attire (burqa) were shown as terrorists, clearly depicting the Muslim community as terrorists,' Bandharan Bachav Samiti said in the representation. The Samiti added that there is a lot of anger and protest in the Muslim community against the teachers, who, it said, showed their criminal mentality by staging such a play in the school. Speaking to The Indian Express, Jehurbhai Hussainbhai Jeja, the president of Bandharan Bachav Samiti, said, 'The Muslim community demands that all those school staff behind this act should be suspended and strict legal action should be taken so that no such unconstitutional act is committed in the future.' When contacted, the Administrative Officer, Munjal Badmaliya, said, 'The cultural programmes are held every year on January 26 and August 15. This year it was themed on Operation Sindoor and the bravery of our defence forces, and programmes were held in every school. Nothing was intentional or deliberate. We will submit our response to the notice.' There are over 30,000 students enrolled in 68 municipal schools in Bhavnagar city. This year as a part of Operation Sindoor celebration, school students sent Rakhis and letters to the soldiers from Gujarat. From Bhavnagar district alone, over 2 lakh school students have written to the soldiers from Gujarat.

More than 100 Karnataka shepherds protest at Bengaluru's Freedom Park. Here is why

Over a hundred shepherds staged a protest at Freedom Park on Tuesday, pressing the Karnataka government to bring in a long-pending law aimed at safeguarding their rights and welfare. The community has accused forest officials and other authorities of continued harassment, assaults and atrocities, particularly in remote forest and hilly regions. The protesting shepherds have list of demands to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah. (ANI) Why are they protesting in Bengaluru? The protest comes months after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in his Budget speech, promised to introduce the Shepherds' Protection and Prevention of Atrocities Bill. While the government has since proposed the Traditional Migratory Shepherds (Protection Against Atrocities and Provision of Welfare) Bill, 2025, herders argue that the draft legislation does not go far enough. The committee cited recent violent incidents in Bagalkote, Bidar, and Dharwad districts as evidence of the risks shepherds face, calling the attacks 'a grave question on humanity.' Protesters said their demand for a dedicated law has been pending for years, stressing that welfare measures such as hostel facilities, educational reservations for shepherds' children, health insurance, and market support for sheep rearing must be legally guaranteed. Dharmasthala SIT is Cong conspiracy, scripted by ultra-Leftists, executed by Siddaramaiah govt: BJP

Karnataka BJP continued its attack on the Siddaramaiah government over the mass grave case, stating on Tuesday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe Dharmasthala was a conspiracy hatched by the Congress party. The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, R. Ashoka, while speaking to reporters, said, "Dharmasthala SIT is a Congress conspiracy. It is scripted by ultra-Leftists and executed by the Siddaramaiah government." He further slammed, "The so-called Dharmasthala investigation is nothing but a manufactured conspiracy by the Congress high command - scripted and directed by ultra-Leftists and urban naxals. These forces, closely aligned with CM Siddaramaiah, are the ones dictating and guiding the government." "Let it be clear: The Dharmasthala SIT was hurriedly set up only to malign Sanatan Dharma and its revered institutions. The Congress-led government in Karnataka is dancing to the tunes of ultra-Leftists and urban Naxals instead of respecting people's faith. The belief of crores of Hindus is being insulted for Congress' appeasement politics," Ashoka said. "This is not justice -- this is Hinduphobia, driven by the conversion mafia and their urban Naxal allies," stated Ashoka. Ashoka said that Karnataka will not forgive this conspiracy. "CM Siddaramaiah, Dy CM D.K. Shivakumar and the entire cabinet must apologise to the people of Karnataka for this sham," he said. BJP MLC C.T. Ravi, speaking to the media at Vidhana Soudha, stated, "The Congress-led government has replied on the Dharmasthala case, but has any action been taken? What action has been taken against those who made false accusations? On YouTube, a hate campaign has been carried out -- what action has been initiated against it? If no action has been taken, what is the reason for this inaction? The government should clarify on whose behest action has not been initiated." "They need to tell the truth. Is there any pressure? If not, why has no action been taken yet? They are saying nothing. Based on the complaint of an unknown person, they initiated an investigation and dug up 17 sites in Dharmasthala. What did they find?" Ravi questioned. "Before the report on the investigation was even submitted, hatred was spread and false allegations were made. What action has the government taken in this regard? The government must come forward and make a statement on why they are not initiating any action," Ravi said. Speaking on the Election Commission of India's (ECI) directive to Rahul Gandhi to file an affidavit within seven days or apologise regarding his vote-theft allegations, Ravi stated, "Hit and run is his habit. He made allegations and then walked away. If he had evidence and faith in the Constitution, he could have lodged a complaint. Until now, no complaint has been filed. This proves that he has no evidence. He made false allegations and tried to build a false narrative, and then went to Bihar. If he wins, he talks about people's trust, but if he loses, he starts blaming EVMs and the ECI." "Whenever he loses an election, he always keeps ready-made allegations handy," Ravi ridiculed. BJP MLA Harish Poonja said that while the Karnataka government has replied on the Dharmasthala matter, the BJP has consistently demanded a logical conclusion to the case. "The people are demanding a report on the progress of the investigation. The Karnataka government should release it at the earliest," he stated. When asked about his controversial statement that CM Siddaramaiah was responsible for the killing of 28 Hindus, MLA Harish Poonja clarified, "This is an issue from 2023, which came to light after I won the election. At that time, the Karnataka government filed a case against me, and the court granted me bail. This matter has been misused on social media. I have already clarified this in the Assembly." It can be recalled that the issue resurfaced after Mahesh Shetty Timarodi reiterated the statement, claiming that CM Siddaramaiah was responsible for the killing of 28 Hindus. The matter was discussed in the Assembly session on Monday, and the government has assured legal action against Shetty, who is one of the activists leading the campaign demanding "justice" in the Dharmasthala murders case for years. MLA Poonja further stated, "There is no legal framework for social media, and it is being misused to spread propaganda. We had asked the government to create a legal framework for YouTube channels. Otherwise, they will continue to send wrong messages to society."
