55,000 displaced in Bajaur as Pakistan forces target TTP, curfew traps thousands

India Today2 days ago
Around 55,000 people have been displaced from Pakistan's Bajaur tribal district after security forces launched a large-scale offensive against militants, a provincial lawmaker told the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly on Monday, warning that hundreds of thousands more remain trapped under curfew.'Almost the entire population is literally hostage to the curfew, which halted their migration,' said Awami National Party legislator Nisar Baz, calling it 'astonishing' that the government had imposed movement restrictions at a time when residents were trying to flee to safety.advertisementPakistani forces began the three-day 'targeted operation' in Bajaur on Monday, focusing on Lowi Mamund and War Mamund tehsils — a former stronghold of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) bordering Afghanistan — after peace talks with militant commanders collapsed last week.
The provincial Home Department said movement restrictions in about 27 areas would last from 12 hours to as long as 72 hours. Locals were ordered to vacate by the district administration, and several families left ahead of the crackdown, while others took shelter in government-run camps.Baz said the curfew had left nearly 400,000 people 'hostage' inside their homes, with many unable to reach safe areas due to a shortage of transport. 'Some have been forced to spend nights in tents or public buildings,' he told the assembly, adding that neither the provincial nor the federal government had made arrangements to meet the needs of the displaced.Authorities, however, insisted families had been moved to safer areas and given food and shelter. Special Adviser to the Prime Minister on Tribal Areas Mubarak Khan Zaib told lawmakers, 'Affected families are not being left alone,' adding that schools were being used as temporary shelters.According to the district administration, 107 educational institutions, mostly in Khar tehsil, have been designated as relief camps for displaced residents. The offensive, dubbed 'Operation Sarbakaf,' was first launched on July 29 but paused a day later as a jirga-led dialogue appeared to make headway. Those talks — aimed at relocating militants to Afghanistan — broke down Friday evening after multiple rounds failed to resolve key issues, according to Dawn newspaper.- EndsWith inputs from PTI

Pakistan announces Army Rocket Force Command

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan turned its Independence Day celebrations on Thursday into a carefully choreographed display of military muscle and political messaging headlined by the announcement of a new Army Rocket Force Command. The event at Islamabad's Jinnah Stadium, branded Marka-e-Haq ('Battle of Truth'), saw Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif share the stage with army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, ISI chief Lt Gen Asim Malik, and Asifa Bhutto Zardari. Military representatives from Turkey and Azerbaijan added a touch of foreign endorsement. In his address, Shehbaz also unveiled 'Misaq-e-Istehkam-e-Pakistan (Charter for Stability)', pitched as a call for unity beyond partisan divides. The newly announced rocket force marks a first in Pakistan's military structure, signalling ambitions for precision-strike capability. But with the economy still under strain, the decision is likely to spark debate over balancing strategic aspirations with fiscal realities. On foreign policy, Shehbaz expressed gratitude to China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, UAE, Iran, and, pointedly, US President Donald Trump, for support during tensions with India. He reiterated Pakistan's firm positions on Kashmir and Palestine, indicating no softening of regional stances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dementia Has Been Linked To a Common Habit. Whether Marka-e-Haq becomes more than pageantry will depend on Islamabad's ability to deliver on promises of reform, stability, and economic recovery long after the parades are over.

Judging in the age of populism

It is at this juncture that Lord Reed's inquiry and recommendations assume particular significance. Firstly, he recommends that while a court 'has to be fearless in defending our constitutional values, it also has to exercise judgement and display a sensitivity towards the other institutions of the state, and towards public opinion, if it is to avoid being perceived as a political actor'. Secondly, he recommends judgements be measured and neutral, thereby demonstrating they are based on law and exercise of legal expertise and experience and not on personal convictions. Thirdly, he stresses on the importance of public outreach in the form of livestreaming of proceedings, maintaining a hands-on and active communication team and establishing educational schemes to reach out to pupils at schools. Lord Reed's prescriptions are valuable and create avenues for the public to interact with the judiciary. To its credit, the Indian judiciary has been making efforts to make justice accessible. The e-Courts Project represents one of the largest judicial digitisation initiatives by sheer scale, connecting 18,735 district and subordinate courts. The Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software (SUVAS), launched in 2019, has translated thousands of Supreme Court judgments into multiple vernacular languages using artificial intelligence. Yet more needs to be done. India's technological achievements through e-courts and SUVAS must be complemented with sustained and planned public outreach. The judiciary also needs dedicated teams who can help judges craft accessible language, provide background briefings to journalists, and manage public messaging during controversial decisions. Perhaps most critically, the Indian judiciary must move beyond its often-adversarial relationship with parliament and towards structured dialogue. While we must strive to better adopt Lord Reed's recommendations to our unique needs, we must be mindful that they are technocratic in nature and may not address the underlying causes of the trust deficit. Courts in developed nations face the inevitable backlash of decades of judicial enforcement of market discipline and acculturation. On the other hand, our problems run much deeper as our judiciary faces urgent systemic issues in the form of corruption and an appointment system that has become a lightning rod. However, the needed reform must ensure independence from executive interference. Saai Sudharsan Sathiyamoorthy | Advocate, Madras High Court (Views are personal) (saaisudharsans@

Members of the Prime Minister's diplomatic mission were also awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz for highlighting Pakistan's position abroad after the conflict with India. According to the army, 488 personnel from the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Navy were awarded. It said that eight Sitara-i-Jurat, five Tamgha-i-Jurat, 24 Sitara-i-Basalat, 45 Tamgha-i-Basalat, 146 Imtiazi Asnad, 259 COAS Commendation Cards and one Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Military) were conferred. The government also conferred Sitara-i-Basalat on the ISI chief Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik, who is also the National Security Advisor, and on Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the army spokesperson. Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed, the spokesperson of the Air Force and Vice Admiral Raja Rab Nawaz, spokesperson of the Navy, were also awarded Sitara-i-Basalat. The two were involved in briefing the media during the conflict with India.
