BJP sends legal notices to Lalu's daughter, Purnia MP & Cong state chief

Time of India14-07-2025
Patna: BJP legal cell has sent legal notices to MP Rajesh Ranjan aka Pappu Yadav, RJD chief Lalu Prasad's daughter Rohini Acharya, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram and party's national spokesperson Supriya Shrinate besides other leaders for their comments against urban development and housing department (UDHD) minister Jibesh Kumar on fake medicines.
"If they do not apologise within 15 days, the party will take legal action against them," BJP state media in charge Danish Eqbal said. He added all the allegations levelled by the opposition against the minister were based on lies and the statements of Congress's Supriya insulted the court. Supriya had demanded Jibesh's resignation as a minister.
BJP legal cell senior lawyer Naresh Dixit said Jibesh was neither the owner of nor associated with the medicine company.
"In such a situation, there is no question of him being associated with a fake medicine manufacturing company. He has no connection with its management either," he said.
Dixit said the court has already given its judgment in the case. He explained the 2012 case when a drug inspector complained that the quality of a medicine, Ciproline 500, was affected due to its improper storage. There was no such report that this medicine was fake or adulterated.
The distributors were also made accused on legal technical grounds. The court gave the decision under the benefit of the Probation of Offenders Act, which is given only when the accused does not have any such history. "If any fake medicine is made, then it cannot be given," he said. He even said no fine had been imposed.
The opposition leaders alleged that the BJP minister Jibesh was found guilty by the Rajasthan's Rajsamand court in the alleged fake medicine case and convicted him. However, later he was released on the condition of maintaining good conduct by paying a fine of Rs 7,000, they alleged.
Rohini had said a fake medicine businessman was still on the minister's chair. Congress state media cell chairman Rajesh Rathorre had demanded an investigation into Jibesh's connection with fake medicines.

CP Radhakrishnan Meets PM Modi After Being Named NDA's Vice-Presidential Candidate

New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a day after being declared the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for the post of Vice President. Radhakrishnan, who arrived in the national capital to attend various NDA meetings, interacted with several leaders. Following their meeting, Prime Minister Modi posted on social media platform X: "Met C P Radhakrishnan ji. Congratulated him on being named as the NDA's vice-presidential candidate. His vast experience of public service and expertise in various fields will enrich our country. May he continue to serve the country with the same dedication and determination as before." Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. Conveyed my best wishes on his being the NDA's Vice Presidential nominee. His long years of public service and experience across domains will greatly enrich our nation. May he continue to serve the nation with the same dedication and resolve he has… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 18, 2025 Radhakrishnan is expected to file his nomination on August 20 and will be felicitated during the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday. On his arrival in New Delhi earlier in the day, the Maharashtra Governor and NDA's Vice-Presidential nominee was welcomed by Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Ram Mohan Naidu, Prahlad Joshi, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and other leaders. Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan is currently serving as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra, a post he has held since July 31, 2024. Previously, he was the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024, and also held additional charge as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry between March and July 2024. A senior BJP leader, Radhakrishnan was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore and has also served as the Tamil Nadu BJP state president. The Congress, meanwhile, has criticized the NDA's choice, describing Radhakrishnan as 'another RSS man,' continuing its attack on the ruling alliance over key constitutional appointments. It is worth noting that the post of Vice President fell vacant on July 21, after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament citing health reasons. The Vice President's tenure is for five years. The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, under Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution. The election process is conducted by the Election Commission under the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952. As per Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the Vice President is elected through a single transferable vote system by proportional representation, and voting is done by secret ballot.

JP Nadda accuses Nehru of selling out India's water security to Pakistan

New Delhi: In a pointed political attack, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President and Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has reignited debate over the historic Indus Water Treaty of 1960, branding it one of the 'biggest blunders' of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. On his X handle, the BJP senior leader Nadda accused Nehru of compromising India's water security and national interest by unilaterally ceding 80 per cent of the Indus basin waters to Pakistan, leaving India with just 20 per cent. 'The nation must know,' Nadda wrote, 'that when Pandit Nehru signed the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, he did so without consulting Parliament. It was placed before the House only two months later, and that too for a token discussion of just two hours.' He described the move as a 'national betrayal,' asserting that Nehru's decision was driven by personal idealism rather than pragmatic statecraft. The Indus Waters Treaty, signed on September 19, 1960, in Karachi, was brokered by the World Bank and divided the six rivers of the Indus basin between India and Pakistan. India retained control over the eastern rivers—Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej—while Pakistan was granted rights over the western rivers—Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab. Critics have long argued that the treaty disproportionately favoured Pakistan, especially given India's growing water needs and agricultural dependence. The BJP president Nadda's remarks come in the wake of media reports that unearthed parliamentary archives showing widespread opposition to the treaty—even within Nehru's own party. Congress MP Asoka Mehta reportedly likened the agreement to a 'second partition,' while AC Guha condemned the payment of Rs 83 crore in sterling to Pakistan during a foreign exchange crisis as 'the height of folly.' A young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then MP from Balrampur, had also fiercely opposed the treaty, warning that appeasing Pakistan's demands would not foster genuine friendship. 'True friendship cannot be built on injustice,' Vajpayee had argued. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also criticised the treaty in recent speeches, calling it 'one-sided' and revealing that certain clauses even restricted India from de-silting its own dams without Pakistan's consent—a condition he described as 'shocking' and detrimental to farmers. The minister concluded his post by asserting that Prime Minister Modi's decision to put the treaty in abeyance was a corrective measure to 'yet another grave historical wrong committed by Congress.' As the BJP intensifies its critique of Nehru-era decisions, the Indus Water Treaty has once again become a flashpoint in India's political discourse—raising questions not just about historical accountability, but also about the future of water diplomacy in South Asia.

CEC did not answer our questions, acting like a BJP spokesperson: Opposition

Accusing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of acting like a BJP spokesperson, opposition parties on Monday (August 18, 2025) said he failed to answer their questions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and issues related to voter list irregularities. Addressing a joint press conference here after a meeting, representatives of eight prominent opposition parties like the Congress, TMC, SP, DMK and RJD hit out at the CEC, alleging that instead of responding to questions raised by them, he chose to attack them at his presser on Sunday. "The right to vote is the most important right given by the Constitution to a common citizen. Democracy depends on it. EC is the body meant to protect it... But we can see that the CEC did not reply to the important questions being raised by the political parties, and is running away from its responsibility," Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said. He should have answered valid questions asked by the Opposition. "On the contrary, he raised questions on political parties and attacked them," he alleged. "It would have been better if they had told why SIR was done in such a hurry, when elections are just three months away, without discussing with political parties; why are they in a rush to announce SIR?" he said. He reminded the EC that its constitutional duty is to ensure free and fair elections and claimed that the officials at the helm are not allowing an inquiry into the Opposition's allegations. "It's clear that ECI is in the hands of some officials who are taking sides. Such officials are against any inquiry," he alleged. Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav said that while the EC is asking Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to give an affidavit with his complaint, his party SP had submitted affidavits with complaints of around 18,000 voters being removed from the list in 2022, but no action was taken. "In the 2022 UP polls, when Akhilesh Yadav said names of SP supporters have been removed from the voter list, we gave affidavits, but no action has been taken," he said. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra said that if the voter list, on which the last general election was conducted, is not correct, the Lok Sabha should be dissolved. "Is the list on which the Lok Sabha election was done fraudulent? If that is true, the current and previous Election Commissioners should be prosecuted, and this Lok Sabha should be dissolved immediately," she said. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha attacked the CEC, saying, "Yesterday we were looking for our CEC, we found a new BJP spokesperson". Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (UBT) also accused the CEC of "behaving like a BJP spokesperson". Addressing a press conference in Delhi on Sunday (August 18, 2025), CEC Gynaesh Kumar said the electoral roll revision going on in Bihar is aimed at removing all shortcomings in voter lists and that it is a matter of grave concern that some parties are spreading misinformation about it, firing from the ECI's shoulder. The CEC rejected as "baseless" the allegations of double voting and "vote theft" and asserted that all stakeholders are working to make SIR a success in a transparent manner.
