One person battling a wildfire in Spain's northwest Leon region has died, authorities said Thursday, raising the toll from the summer's fire season to three.
"Today, we mourn a new death of a person who was part of the firefighting operation in the province of Leon, more specifically in the Valderia region," Nicanor Sen Velez, prefect for Castile and Leon, wrote on X.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed the death to the public broadcaster, while offering condolences to the victim's family, colleagues and community.
The death comes just after the interior minister had appealed to the European Union for help in fighting the fires.
The government was particularly calling for two water-bombing planes after regional authorities said almost 6,000 people from 26 localities had been evacuated from their homes.
Thursday's death comes after a man had died due to severe burns he received in a blaze some 25 kilometres from Madrid.
That same evening, a 35-year-old volunteer died while fighting another blaze in the Leon region.
Spain is among several European countries experiencing scorching temperatures this week that fuel wildfires and which scientists say human-induced climate change is intensifying.
A total of 199 wildfires have scorched nearly 98,784 hectares (244,100 acres) across Spain this year -- more than double the area burned during the same period in 2024.

Iraq electricity gradually back after nationwide outage - Region

Electricity supply returned to all Iraq's provinces on Tuesday, a government official told AFP, expecting the grid's full recovery within a day after a nationwide power outage. Electricity shortages are a frequent complaint in Iraq, suffering from endemic corruption and dilapidated public infrastructure. Most households rely on private generators, acquired to compensate for daily power cuts to public electricity. On Monday, the electricity ministry said that "a record rise in temperatures" coupled with a surge in demand resulted in the shutdown of transmission lines, which then led to a total outage. A senior ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP on Tuesday that "since midnight, all provinces have seen the return" of power supply. The official cautioned that "it is happening gradually", with the central province of Karbala, where millions of Shiite Muslim pilgrims were expected for a major religious commemoration, being "the first to recover its electricity". In the capital Baghdad, the grid was back to 95 percent of its normal capacity, said the official. The outage came amid a heatwave that Iraqi meteorological services expect to last more than a week, with temperatures climbing as high as 50C in parts of the country. While the vast majority of Iraqis rely on private generators, they often cannot power all household appliances, especially air conditioners. Iraq is sometimes rocked by protests when outages worsen in the hot summer months. To avoid outages during peak demand, Iraq would need to produce around 55,000 megawatts of electricity. This month, for the first time, the country's power plants reached the 28,000-megawatt threshold. The electricity ministry official said that "the system has returned to normal and is stable", producing 24,000 megawatts and expected to reach 27,000 once the final malfunctions related to Monday's outage are resolved. 1 Dead, 180 Evacuated as Wildfire Rages Near Madrid

Israa Farhan Firefighters have brought under control a large wildfire near Tres Cantos, close to the Spanish capital Madrid, which claimed the life of one person and forced the evacuation of 180 residents. According to Madrid regional authorities, favorable overnight conditions allowed crews to contain the fire after hours of intense work. The blaze, which broke out earlier this week, destroyed more than 2,000 acres of land and posed a serious threat to nearby communities. Emergency services reported that a man suffered burns covering 98 percent of his body. He was airlifted to La Paz Hospital but later died from his injuries. Spain's national weather agency has warned that the ongoing heat wave will continue through Tuesday, with temperatures in some areas expected to reach 44°C. Scientists say the combination of record heat and prolonged drought across the Mediterranean region is creating highly dangerous conditions for wildfires, making the area increasingly vulnerable to devastating blazes during the summer months. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani
