No deadline to apply for ration cards, says Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar

The Hindu23-05-2025

Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar said on Thursday that there was no deadline to apply for new ration cards, and no eligible person would be left out of the scheme.
Addressing the media along with Civil Supplies Commissioner Saurabh Gaur here, Mr. Manohar said there was also no deadline to apply for modifications, and maintained that there was no delay in issuing the ration cards.
The cards were being issued in 21 days of the submission of applications, subject to compliance with the eKYC norm. Modifications and updating of the cards were being done from May 7.
As on date, eKYC of 95% of the ration cards had been completed, which no other State could accomplish. Out of 4,24,59,028 cards, eKYC was done for 22,59,498.
Mr. Manohar said so far five lakh applications had been received, and there had been no major glitches in sanctioning the cards.
After the coalition government took charge, ration card data had been linked with the village and ward secretariats. Ration cards would be distributed to all the eligible beneficiaries in June.
The Minister clarified that those seeking changes in the ration cards need not submit marriage certificate or wedding photos as proof. Clear instructions were given in that regard to the secretariat staff, he said.
Addition of names to ration cards would be done immediately after due verification, but valid documentation was required to have names deleted. Deletion of names was limited to cases of death. Surrender of cards had to be done by families together.
eKYC, Aadhaar seeding and ration card surrender options would be made available through WhatsApp soon, Mr. Manohar added.

Man arrested for threatening PM in bid to implicate rival

The threat call was made to the Prime Minister's Office. The alert was triggered on Thursday, coinciding with the PM's two-day visit to Bihar, during which he participated in a roadshow in Patna and a public meeting in Bikramganj. Intelligence agencies including the NIA, IB and Bhagalpur police were placed on high alert. Bhagalpur SSP Hriday Kant formed a special investigation team (SIT) led by DSP (law and order) Chandra Bhushan and including officials from the DIU, CIAT and Sultanganj police. The team began a discreet probe to trace the origin of the message. SSP Hriday Kant said a detailed technical analysis led the SIT to a mobile number registered to a septuagenarian, Mantu Chowdhary of Maheshi village. "He said he is illiterate and uses only a basic keypad phone. He claimed Sameer had trapped him," said the SSP. The SIT found that Sameer, a BCA graduate and computer-literate, had used Mantu's mobile data to send the threat via a WhatsApp call using a virtual private network (VPN), which he accessed 71 times through another fingerprint-secured phone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo During interrogation, Sameer confessed to the crime. "The accused remains in custody at Sultanganj police station under tight security," the SSP said, adding that technical teams will analyse data from the seized cellphone. An expert said VPNs encrypt data and mask IP addresses, making such threats traceable only through in-depth forensic analysis.
