Lt General Dinesh Rana assumes charge as 18th Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command
Rana relinquished the appointment of Director General Defence Intelligence Agency and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Intelligence on May 31.
In a post on social media X, Headquarters of the Integrated Defence Staff wrote, 'Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, #CISC & All Ranks of HQ IDS congratulate and wish him best of luck in future endeavours.'
Rana was commissioned into the 10th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 19, 1987 and commanded the same battalion.
In a career spanning over 37 years, the General Officer has held diverse operational, instructional, and staff appointments across various terrains and theatres. His service includes tenures with the Indian Military Training Team and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. He has commanded an Infantry Brigade and Division in the Eastern Sector and subsequently led the Gajraj Corps along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Rana has also served as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. His staff appointments include Brigade Major of an Independent Armoured Brigade, Deputy Director General Staff Duties, Brigadier Military Intelligence (East), Provost Marshal, and Director General Staff Duties at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army).
Prior to taking over as CINCAN, the General Officer served as Director General, Defence Intelligence Agency, making history as the first Chief of Defence Intelligence to be elevated to the rank of Commander-in-Chief -- a reflection of the growing importance of defence intelligence and jointmanship in India's military leadership.
For his distinguished service, Lt Gen Rana has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Yudh Seva Medal (YSM), Sena Medal (SM), and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card. As a young officer, he earned the Sena Medal and COAS Commendation for gallantry in Kashmir. He also holds a Ph.D. in China's defence modernisation. (ANI)

Next-Gen BrahMos in pipeline, says DRDO chief in Pune
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], August 9 (ANI): DRDO is looking to build a next-generation BrahMos missile, which will be a lighter, smaller version of the current version, the organisation's Chairman and Department of Defence Secretary (R&D) Samir V Kamat said on Saturday. BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) will be able to fit into any platform, unlike the current missile, which can only be used with the Sukhoi aircraft, the DRDO chief added. 'We are looking at BrahMos-NG, which is a smaller version of BrahMos, which can then be fitted on all our other platforms. Today, BrahMos can only be fitted on the Sukhoi platform, but if we can make it smaller, we can fit it on all our platforms. We are planning to start it soon," he at a press conference in Pune on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Kamat also highlighted the pivotal role of indigenous technologies, including the BrahMos missile and Akashteer air defence system, in Operation Sindoor.'When it comes to offensive weapons, BrahMos was the primary weapon used, which was launched from our Sukhoi Mark 1 platform. When it comes to defensive weapon systems, the Akashteer system, the anti-drone system," he added. Kamat further mentioned how the Akashteer network helped in identifying any threats coming towards India, and also in deciding what kind of weapon could be used to neutralise such threats.'All the sensors were networked using the Akashteer, which helped in identifying the threats coming towards us and then deploying the right kind of weapon to neutralise those threats. Advanced early warning and control aircraft were also used for advanced surveillance. This is broadly what I can say without getting into too much," the DRDO Chairman while also expressing pride over the growing strength of India's defence research and development sector, Kamat mentioned, 'It's indeed a proud moment for all of us. It's a reflection of the strength of our R&D and production in the defence domain. I'm sure going ahead, this number will keep increasing."Earlier, it was reported that the annual defence production has achieved a record high of Rs 1,50,590 crore for the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25. The milestone represents a robust 18 per cent growth over the previous fiscal's output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90 per cent increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was Rs 79,071 crore. WB: Protests erupt in Silliguri on one year of RG Kar rape and murder incident
Silliguri (West Bengal) [India], August 9 (ANI): People of Silliguri on Saturday took out a protest march against the rape and murder incident of a junior doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital that took place a year ago. Arunima Ghosh, one of the many protestors, expressed her disappointment at the injustice to the victim as the accused in the case still remain unpunished.'We expected the CBI, police, the state government and our judiciary to take proper action. It is a very shameful thing that such an incident took place in the heart of West Bengal, Kolkata. We are extremely disappointed that the accused are still roaming without any action taken against them. We are concerned that this can happen with any of us," said Arunima Ghosh while speaking to RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when a female postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar room on campus. The case led to widespread protests and outrage across the country, with many demanding justice for the victim. The investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the Calcutta High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the police's handling of the case. The CBI has since arrested several in the day, Kolkata Police lathi-charged the protesters in Central Kolkata as they attempted to breach barricades during the 'Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan', a march toward the state secretariat to demand justice for the victim. The victim's parents also participated in the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' of the RG Kar rape and murder victim said, 'The high court has given us permission to stage protests peacefully…Police used a lathi charge on us, that's why we got injured…On 9 August 2024, the police treated us very badly…We were allowed to see the body only after having a telephonic conversation with Mamata Banerjee. We had to stand out for 3 hours and 30 minutes…"West Bengal Police has heightened the security in Howrah by deploying additional forces and riot control vehicles. (ANI)
