Rihanna, A$AP Rocky watch Denzel Washington award in Cannes

CANNES - Rapper A$AP Rocky and his partner Rihanna watched on as Denzel Washington received a surprise lifetime award at the Cannes film festival on Monday.
Washington, 70, was at the festival for the first time for the premiere of his latest film with director Spike Lee, "Highest 2 Lowest". The two-time Oscar-winning actor was presented with an honorary Palme d'Or by festival chiefs Thierry Fremaux and Iris Knobloch before the screening, where A$AP Rocky and Rihanna were among the VIPs.
A$AP Rocky is Washington's co-star in "Highest 2 Lowest", extending an acting career that includes "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You" by Mary Bronstein, which showed at the Berlin film festival in February.
Before handing over the prize to Washington, Fremaux introduced a montage of Washington's memorable performances including in "Malcolm X" and "Mo' Better Blues", both directed by Lee. Clips were also shown from "Glory", which earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1989, and "Training Day", for which he won best actor in 2002.
The cast of "Highest 2 Lowest" put on a show on the Cannes red carpet, with Spike Lee in an orange pinstripe suit, round glasses and an orange-and-blue hat, and A$AP Rocky showing off a gold dental piece.
Although Cannes usually hands out honorary awards in dedicated ceremonies, it is not unusual for actors to receive them unexpectedly -- as happened with Harrison Ford at the premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" in 2023. - AFP

"I found it fascinating that fans both at home and abroad each have their own favourite characters," he said at the conference. "I am so proud of connecting with audiences over such a long-running series. I can't wait to see viewers' reactions to the new season." Lee Byung-hun, who played the Front Man, attributed the drama's political and social insight to its profound resonance with global audiences. "The reason this series is so much loved in so many countries with different cultures and languages is because they all connect with the messages it offers." The director, who called the show's success "miraculous," plans to leverage the experience and knowledge gained from "Squid Game" for his next endeavour. "While we all start new projects hoping for success, achieving this level is something else entirely. The billionaire Amazon founder is due to marry journalist Lauren Sanchez in a celebration in Venice from June 24 to 26 that is expected to attract countless VIPs. Not everyone is feeling the love though, with some residents hanging a huge banner with an X over Bezos's name on a belltower overlooking the Venice lagoon before the sign was removed on Thursday. "He's not welcome, not in Venice, not anywhere!" wrote the "No Space for Bezos" collective on Facebook, which was responsible for the banner. Bezos is also the owner of space travel company Blue Origin, whose all-female flight in April carrying Sanchez, pop star Katy Perry and four others met with a public backlash for its high cost and environmental impact. Kimiko Nishimoto, who died this week at the age of 97, said in a 2018 interview that 'you can take photos no matter how old you get'. 'Wherever it is, in your house, outside, or in your bed, you can do it. That is the nice thing about a camera,' she said. Dubbed the 'selfie queen' by Japanese media, Nishimoto's posts showed her in various candid poses – from riding a broom like Harry Potter to imitating an off-duty sumo wrestler on their fifth beer of the night. 'Our mother always created her work with a smile,' a post from her son Kazutami Nishimoto said on her Instagram account on Thursday.
