JOHANNESBURG : Police in South Africa launched a manhunt today for gunmen who killed eight customers at a tavern in the southeastern city of Durban.
The attack late yesterday evening was the latest mass shooting in the crime-weary African nation that has one of the world's highest murder rates.
The incident unfolded when an unknown number of gunmen entered the bar in Umlazi township and opened fire, police said.
First responders found the eight dead people 'lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds', police said in a statement, adding that two of them were women.
The victims were aged between 22 and 40 years old, police said.
'Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway,' they said.
Shootings are common in South Africa, often fuelled by gang violence and alcohol.
Many people own licenced fire arms for personal protection, yet there are many more illegal guns in circulation.
There are around 75 murders a day in South Africa, according to police data.

Green heist in Yishun: Alleged bonsai bandit busted after S$1,500 plant pilfering spree

SINGAPORE, June 12 — A 42-year-old man has been charged with stealing a mini jungle of potted plants — including six prized bonsai — in Singapore's Yishun neighbourhood, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported today. Between June 5 and 8, Lee De Yuan allegedly went on a leafy looting spree in the early hours, making off with 18 potted plants, three flowerpots, and two plant racks. The total haul? S$1,514 (RM5,000) worth of carefully nurtured greenery, according to police. Among the stolen flora were lohansong bonsai trees (two large, two small), fu gui and camellia plants, cactuses, lucky bamboo, and even gold-coloured pots. According to CNA, Police zeroed in on Lee using footage from police cameras and nearby CCTVs. He was arrested on Tuesday, and officers managed to recover the stolen plants. Lee was charged today and will return to court on June 19. If convicted, he could face up to three years in jail, a fine, or both.

Myanmar man fatally stabbed in Tangkak, Johor cops hunting UNHCR cardholder suspect

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Less than two weeks after a man killed his wife by slashing her throat with a vegetable knife, another murder has rocked the district of Tangkak, Johor — this time involving two foreign nationals. The latest incident occurred around 7pm last night, when a Myanmar man was fatally stabbed with a sharp weapon, believed to be a knife, at a rented house along Jalan Kemajuan, according to a report published in Harian Metro. According to police, a quarrel had broken out between the victim and the suspect, a 24-year-old Myanmar national, who fled the scene after the attack. Tangkak district police chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said the suspect holds a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card. Efforts to track down the suspect are ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to contact the Tangkak District Police Headquarters (IPD) hotline at 06-9785222 or the investigating officer at 019-2699573. On June 2, a woman was killed by her husband after a heated argument at a house in Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir. That case only came to light the following day when the suspect surrendered at a police station.
