(AP pic) JOHANNESBURG : Police in South Africa launched a manhunt today for gunmen who killed eight customers at a tavern in the southeastern city of Durban. The attack late yesterday evening was the latest mass shooting in the crime-weary African nation that has one of the world's highest murder rates. First responders found the eight dead people 'lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds', police said in a statement, adding that two of them were women. The victims were aged between 22 and 40 years old, police said. 'Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway,' they said. Manhunt underway after mass shooting kills 8 in South Africa
May 17 (UPI) -- A manhunt is underway after an unknown number of shooters entered a tavern in Durban, South Africa, and killed eight people Friday night. The mass shooting occurred in the Zama information settlement at U Section, Umlazi, the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal, said Saturday in a news release. "The victims were inside the dwelling when an unknown number of suspects entered and opened fire, killing them at the scene," the news release says. "Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway, and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects." Local police found six men and two women between ages 22 and 40 with multiple gunshot wounds lying dead in a pool of blood after receiving multiple calls about murders. Durban is South Africa's main cargo port and is located on the northeastern coast of South Africa. About 4.2 million people live in the greater Durban area. South Africa averages 75 murders every day and reported 6,953 murders from October to December in 2024. Gangs often commit the murders, which sometimes target entire families or prominent people. Gunmen killed a family of seven, including three children, in September and last month abducted a U.S. missionary while he was delivering a sermon at his church. Police rescued the missionary after killing three of his kidnappers in a shootout. Soccer star Luke Fleurs in April 2024 was shot and killed while topping off his car's fuel tank at a gas station in South Africa. Police arrested six suspects in Fleurs' killing.

8 people shot dead in a bar found "lying in a pool of blood," South Africa police say
Police in South Africa launched a manhunt on Saturday for gunmen who killed eight customers at a tavern in the southeastern city of Durban. The attack late on Friday evening was the latest mass shooting in the crime-weary African nation that has one of the world's highest murder rates. The incident unfolded when an unknown number of gunmen entered the bar in Umlazi township and opened fire, police said. The victims were aged between 22 and 40 years old, police said. "Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway," they said. Shootings are common in South Africa, often fueled by gang violence and alcohol. Many people own licensed firearms for personal protection, yet there are many more illegal guns in circulation. There are around 75 murders a day in South Africa, according to police data. According to the most recent government crime statistics, 6,953 people were murdered in the country from October 2024 to December 2024. Sometimes entire families are targeted. Last September, gunmen shot dead seven members of the same family, including three children, in an execution-style killing in their home in a rural part of the country. In 2013, 10 members of the same family — including a 13-year-old — were killed in a mass shooting at their house in South Africa. Sometimes, more high-profile people are targeted. Last month, gunmen in South Africa abducted a U.S. missionary from his church as he was delivering a sermon. Pastor Josh Sullivan was later rescued during a shootout between police and his captors that left three suspects dead. In April 2024, soccer star Luke Fleurs was gunned down as he refilled his car at a gas station in South Africa. Six suspects were arrested.

Neighbours testify about witnessing robbery in murder trial of Umlazi teen
Two Umlazi youngsters testified in the Durban high court on Tuesday about witnessing a burglary at the home of teenager Aphiwe Ngcobo, who was killed on the eve of the general elections last year. Sizwe Mthembu and Mondli Mhlongo, who live near the Ngcobo family, gave evidence in the trial of Sifundo Bongani Bhengu, 39, and Bongani Jali, 24, who are charged with housebreaking with intent to steal, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the murder of the teen. They have pleaded not guilty. Ngcobo, 17, a grade 11 pupil at Durban Girls' Secondary in Greyville, was found bound and gagged with a wound in her chest. Mthembu said he knew Ngcobo's father Mondli as an elderly man who he described as being a father figure for him. He said his home is built on a slope next to the Ngcobo family. He said shortly before 10am on the eve of elections, he and his friends were sitting outside when a white VW Polo reversed near the entrance to the Ngcobo's home. A tall man clad in a hoodie and a mask got out of the car. The man had a revolver, wore gloves and had a key for the gate. Mhlongo said the person who entered the Ngcobo home came out with a TV. He said it was the first time he saw the VW Polo.
