Neighbours testify about witnessing robbery in murder trial of Umlazi teen
Two Umlazi youngsters testified in the Durban high court on Tuesday about witnessing a burglary at the home of teenager Aphiwe Ngcobo, who was killed on the eve of the general elections last year.
Sizwe Mthembu and Mondli Mhlongo, who live near the Ngcobo family, gave evidence in the trial of Sifundo Bongani Bhengu, 39, and Bongani Jali, 24, who are charged with housebreaking with intent to steal, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the murder of the teen. They have pleaded not guilty.
Ngcobo, 17, a grade 11 pupil at Durban Girls' Secondary in Greyville, was found bound and gagged with a wound in her chest.
Mthembu said he knew Ngcobo's father Mondli as an elderly man who he described as being a father figure for him. He said his home is built on a slope next to the Ngcobo family.
He said shortly before 10am on the eve of elections, he and his friends were sitting outside when a white VW Polo reversed near the entrance to the Ngcobo's home. A tall man clad in a hoodie and a mask got out of the car. The man had a revolver, wore gloves and had a key for the gate.
Mhlongo said the person who entered the Ngcobo home came out with a TV. He said it was the first time he saw the VW Polo.

Mashatile's VIP protectors' occurrence report doesn't mention assault
One of the officers from Deputy President Paul Mashatile's protection team told the VIP incident management officer that a speeding VW Polo driver was trying to get close to the main car the day the VIP officers allegedly assaulted a motorist. Sgt Goodwill Rikhotso, an incident management officer at the VIP police unit, revealed this at the Randburg magistrate's court on Tuesday. He testified in the case of the eight VIP protection unit officers from Mashatile's protection team who allegedly assaulted a motorist on the N1 highway in Johannesburg in July 2023. Rikhotso, who writes accident and incident reports in the VIP unit, testified that one of the accused officers, W/O Phineas Boshielo, reported to him about the July 2 2023 incident. However, the incident report didn't mention anything about an assault incident. 'W/O Boshielo reported that at about 16:00 bravo convoy were run on the N1 north road from Soweto when a blue Polo driving behind the convoy, trying to get close to the main car,' Rikhotso read from the report he compiled during the examination in chief. The state led the evidence of Rikhotso, who testified that they were speaking in Tswana when Boshielo called him, and there was no miscommunication between them. 'They first backup shielded the main car against driver of the Polo. They ordered the driver to reduce speed but instead he continue to race with the convoy and they end up forcing him out the road,' Rikhotso read the report. Rikhotso testified that Boshielo reported that: 'They stopped him [driver] and inside the Polo there were three males and one female, smashed on the windows trying to run away but the first backup managed to catch them and they searched them and the vehicle as well but they did not find any weapons in the vehicle. 'Later the first backup joined the convoy, and Capt Lepota was informed about the incident.' Shadrack Kojoana, Johannes Mampuru, Pomso Mofokeng, Harmans Ramokhonami, Phineas Boshielo, Churchill Mkhize, Lesibana Rambau and Moses Tshidada face 12 counts, including assault, malicious damage to property, pointing of a firearm, contravening the Road Traffic Act, reckless and negligent driving and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. The case was adjourned to Wednesday for the defence lawyer, Mswazi Makhubele, to consult the accused before cross-examining Rikhotso.

Mpumalanga teenager charged with perjury after faking rape
A 16-year-old girl has been charged with perjury after her claim about being raped proved to be fabricated. During the police investigation it was established no rape had occurred. 'The girl eventually confessed she had visited a male friend and, fearing her parents' reaction, chose to lie about being raped,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane. In her original report, the teenager alleged she was hitchhiking from Dullstroom (Emnothweni) to Lydenburg (Mashishing) when a black VW Polo with two male occupants speaking English offered her a lift. She claimed after passing Coromandel, the driver diverted into a secluded area, where she was rendered unconscious by a cloth with a chemical smell. On regaining consciousness, she claimed the passenger was raping her. He offered her money, which she refused. 'The claims have since been proven false by the investigating officers.'

Mpumalanga teen girl charged for lying about rape ordeal
The girl fabricated the story to conceal her visit to a male friend. On Wednesday, Mpumalanga police were sent on a manhunt for two men who were driving a black VW Polo from Dullstroom to Lydenburg on Sunday on allegations of rape. However, this turned out to be a smokescreen. According to Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, a 16-year-old girl reported to police that she was hitchhiking on Sunday and got raped after being given a lift by strangers. 'According to the report, the female victim was from Dullstroom, heading to Lydenburg, when a black VW Polo with two male occupants stopped and offered her a lift. She then accepted the offer,' said Mdhluli on Wednesday. The passenger allegedly covered her mouth with a cloth emitting a chemical smell, causing her to lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, she realised the passenger was busy raping her.' A case docket was opened and assigned to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for investigation. At the time, acting police provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, promised the public that the members assigned to investigate would hunt down the suspects until they were brought to justice. 'She lied' However, there was no rape case to investigate and consequently, no suspects to arrest because this was a fabricated story. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said on Friday that the 16-year-old girl had been charged with perjury after investigations revealed that she fabricated the entire story. However, during the course of their investigation, it was established that no rape had occurred. Mkhwanazi expressed deep disappointment at the false report and issued a stern warning to the public about the seriousness of making false statements to the police. 'We will not show mercy to individuals who open false cases. The crime statistics for the last quarter of 2024/2025 indicate an increase in sexual offences. It is therefore extremely concerning and disheartening when people abuse the system by reporting fake cases. These actions waste police resources and undermine our efforts to fight gender-based violence, which we treat as a top priority. Mpumalanga rape stats Police Minister Senzo Mchunu recently released the fourth-quarter crime statistics and revealed that three Mpumalanga police stations were among the top 30 stations with reported cases. These are Masoyi, Calcutta, and Kabokweni police stations, all located in the Ehlanzeni district, which have recorded an increase in their cases. Most incidents occurred in the residences of either the perpetrator or the victim, with 362 cases recorded, followed by public places, with 161 cases.
