Mashatile's VIP protectors' occurrence report doesn't mention assault
Sgt Goodwill Rikhotso, an incident management officer at the VIP police unit, revealed this at the Randburg magistrate's court on Tuesday.
He testified in the case of the eight VIP protection unit officers from Mashatile's protection team who allegedly assaulted a motorist on the N1 highway in Johannesburg in July 2023.
Rikhotso, who writes accident and incident reports in the VIP unit, testified that one of the accused officers, W/O Phineas Boshielo, reported to him about the July 2 2023 incident.
However, the incident report didn't mention anything about an assault incident.
'W/O Boshielo reported that at about 16:00 bravo convoy were run on the N1 north road from Soweto when a blue Polo driving behind the convoy, trying to get close to the main car,' Rikhotso read from the report he compiled during the examination in chief.
The state led the evidence of Rikhotso, who testified that they were speaking in Tswana when Boshielo called him, and there was no miscommunication between them.
'They first backup shielded the main car against driver of the Polo. They ordered the driver to reduce speed but instead he continue to race with the convoy and they end up forcing him out the road,' Rikhotso read the report.
Rikhotso testified that Boshielo reported that: 'They stopped him [driver] and inside the Polo there were three males and one female, smashed on the windows trying to run away but the first backup managed to catch them and they searched them and the vehicle as well but they did not find any weapons in the vehicle.
'Later the first backup joined the convoy, and Capt Lepota was informed about the incident.'
Shadrack Kojoana, Johannes Mampuru, Pomso Mofokeng, Harmans Ramokhonami, Phineas Boshielo, Churchill Mkhize, Lesibana Rambau and Moses Tshidada face 12 counts, including assault, malicious damage to property, pointing of a firearm, contravening the Road Traffic Act, reckless and negligent driving and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
The case was adjourned to Wednesday for the defence lawyer, Mswazi Makhubele, to consult the accused before cross-examining Rikhotso.

Another Nelson Mandela Bay prosecutor targeted in brazen shooting
Shots were fired at a prosecutor and his family outside their home in Tiryville, Kariega, in a brazen attack reminiscent of the killing of Tracy Brown last month. High-ranking police and government officials have voiced their distress after shots were fired at a prosecutor and his family in Nelson Mandela Bay in the early hours of Monday morning. While the prosecutor and his family escaped the harrowing event unscathed, the incident bore an alarming similarity to the shooting that claimed the life of Gqeberha prosecutor Tracy Brown last month. According to a police report, the prosecutor and his family arrived at their home in Tiryville, Kariega, at about 1.15am on Monday. While they were in the prosecutor's car outside the gate of their property, they were approached by four people. One of them pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots at the car, and the group fled on foot. The police said the motive for the attack was yet to be determined and formed part of 'a critical line of investigation'. Detectives at the Kamesh police station are investigating a case of attempted murder. The identities of the prosecutor and his family are being withheld for their safety. On July 31, Regional Court prosecutor Tracy Brown was shot in the driveway of her home in Young Park, Gqeberha. She was in her car when four masked men approached, shot several rounds into her car, and fled in a VW Polo. Brown was rushed to hospital, where she died from her wounds. Her death, which was widely regarded as a targeted murder, rocked the Nelson Mandela Bay legal fraternity and put the safety of court officials under the spotlight. In April, another Eastern Cape prosecutor, Elona Sombulula, was shot and killed in Ngcobo. Police response 'The brazen attack on an officer of the court and his family is an attack on the very foundation of our justice system. We will not tolerate such acts of intimidation and violence. We are confident that we will apprehend those responsible,' said the acting Eastern Cape police commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, after Monday's incident. A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Luxolo Tyali, said they would not comment on the matter at this stage due to the sensitive nature of the incident. The Eastern Cape MEC for community safety, Xolile Nqatha, said, 'This is a matter of great concern which cannot be taken lightly. It cannot be allowed that criminals target our prosecutors so openly and repeatedly. Serious action must be taken.' At Brown's memorial service in Gqeberha two weeks ago, Nqatha said the investigation into her murder was bearing fruit, and arrests were imminent. No arrests have been made, but on Tuesday, Nqatha said suspects would be apprehended soon. The police have urged anyone with information about Monday's attempted murder to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Heinrich Swanepoel, on 071 475 2294. KwaMashu man seeks bail in connection with deadly taxi violence shooting
A man from KwaMashu charged with Newlands West deadly shooting is set to apply for bail. Image: File A 27-year-old man from KwaMashu will be applying for bail later in August, as he is alleged to be one of the suspects involved in the deadly taxi violence shooting that happened in January 2024 at Newlands West near Midway Crossing. The shooting spree left eight people dead, and 11 people survived it. Thamsanqa Zikhali made a brief appearance on Friday at the Durban Magistrate's Court, where State prosecutor Advocate Sanele Ntombela told the court that the State would be opposing bail. He said Zikhali's bail is under Schedule 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act. Zikhali is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of murder, seven counts of attempted murder, two counts of possession of a fully automatic firearm, possession of a firearm without a licence, and possession of ammunition. According to the State, Zikhali committed the offences with 25-year-old Sphelele Gumede from Pietermaritzburg. Gumede was first arrested, and his matter is now in the High Court. Additionally, the State alleges that the pair, along with others, planned to kill members of the taxi association operating from the Midway Crossing taxi rank. 'On January 11, 2024, the accused men drove to the taxi rank in a VW Polo, armed with rifles. When they got to the rank, they opened fire on people who were there,' the State said.
