
Dashing Omoda C9 plug-in hybrid proves to be a Golf GTI-killer
There is no denying that Chery-owned Omoda has made a big splash with the introduction the C9 PHEV. This SUV has mostly been paraded around as a fashion accessory. It's always seen on display at high-end celeb events, with the most recent being the Durban July.
But the Omoda C9 has another side to it, and that is its hardcore performance capabilities. Not only is it faster than any other SUV at the price. But this family SUV can also straight up to a VW Golf 8 GTI and destroy it out on the road.
Petrol and electricity combine
PHEV stands for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and this means that the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine gets a proper shot of electricity. Making only 105kW and 215Nm, the petrol engine would not even be a threat to VW Golf 8.5 1.4 TSI. But add a 34.5kWh battery into the mix that drives four electric motors, one at each wheel, and you have a 440kW/915Nm Golf GTI killer.

The battery adds 335kW of power and 700Nm of torque. The extra urge is driven down to all four wheels via a three-speed DHT auto box. Stomping on the accelerator of the Omoda C9 PHEV produced a tested 0 to 100km/h time of 5.16 seconds, which is fractionally slower than the claimed 4.9 seconds, but its way quicker than the 5.88 posted by the VW Golf 8 GTI.
Is there a downside? The short answer is yes. There is a delay from when you hit the accelerator to when the C9 figures it all out and lets the car go. This everybody will live with because after that it bolts as you have just read.

Omoda C9 PHEV's runs inconsistent
What concerned me was that the runs were not consistent. Sometimes the petrol engine would kick in earlier and then later, and this meant you could get a fast Omoda C9 one run and then you could get a not so fast one the next. I even had it the one time where something glitched and the car limped to about 120km/h and would not go any faster.
What didn't glitch was the fuel consumption. Omoda claim an overall figure of 1.4-litres per 100km and a range of 150km on the battery alone to give a combined number of over 1 100km.
The C9 PHEV offers 70kW fast-charging capability at public charging stations. This takes the car from 30 to 80% in around 25 minutes. Or you can use the Omoda installed wall charger at your home and recharge the battery in five and a half hours when it is parked in your garage doing nothing.
Impressive fuel economy
In my world, I could get away with using battery power most of the time. So, my cost to run the Omoda C9 PHEV was minimal and even below 1.4 litres per 100km. The only caveat is that although the car indicated that I had 150km of battery range when fully charged as claimed, this figure was never realised. The best I could get was around 100km. This said, at the end of my week with the car, I ended up averaging an impressive 6.8 litres per 100km, because this included the drive out to Gerotek and all the flat out runs done there.

Talking of drive, there was one thing that really irritated me. The brakes. The pedal feel is so electronically manipulated. No matter the setting chosen, the brakes were far too sensitive, especially at low speed. And not once, but almost every time I applied the brakes, the passengers landed up pinned against the seatbelts. Maybe over time one might figure the brakes out, but I couldn't in my short time with the car.
The Omoda C9 PHEV offers all sorts of luxury and tech, which we have covered in The Citizen Motoring already. Every driver assistance feature is offered too, and the car has space for days. If you can get over the frustration of operating most of the controls on the big centre digital screen and ignore the odd system failure warnings that pop up on the dash. The car is a great place to spend a lot of time.

Value for money
Pricing for the new Omoda C9 PHEV is R999 000. It's a big junk of change to lay out for a Chinese car that has some glitches. But it is better priced than anything in its segment.
Giving you long term peace of mind, the car comes with a seven-year/100 000km service plan, seven-year/200 000km vehicle warranty, 10-year/200 000km warranty for certain electric drive unit components, 10-year/one million km engine warranty and a new industry-leading 10-year/unlimited km power battery pack warranty for the first owner, reverting to 10 years/200 000km for subsequent owners.

Next Denza? Less hardcore Fangchengbao Ti7 enters production
Fangchengbao's fourth model could, possibly, become the next export market Denza product, however, noting has been confirmed. BYD-owned Fangchengbao has officially started production of its fourth domestic market model called the Ti7. Fitting in Set to be positioned between the Bao 5 and Bao 8, the Ti7 follows the naming example of the brand's smallest model, the Tai 3, not to adopt the repeated Bao moniker, which translates as Leopard in Mandarin. The fundamentals This being enforced by its use of a unibody platform rather than the body-on-frame Dual Mode Offroad that underpins the Bao 5, Bao 8 and BYD Shark bakkie, the Ti7 has reported measurements of 4 999 mm in overall length, a wheelbase of 2 920 mm, height of 1 865 mm and width of 1 995 mm. Image:: Providing seating for five, again similar to the Tai 3, the Ti7 continues with the usage of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, albeit under the designation DMS. As with the Bao 5 and Shark, this consists of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine working in conjunction with a 26.6-kWh battery pack powering a single electric motor, and a bigger 35.6-kWh module motivating two electric units. Image: Fangchengbao China While no combined power and torque figures have so far been revealed, Fangchengbao does report an all-electric range of between 100 to 130 km based on China's CLTC measurements. Next Denza, and a first? Reported to have a price tag of between 250 000 to 300 000 yuan, which amounts to R615 628-R738 754 when directly converted, and without taxes, the Ti7's significance lies in it being, potentially, rebadged under Denza name for export markets. Similar to the Bao 5 and Bao 8 that go under the nomenclatures Denza B5 and B8, the Ti7 could be renamed T7 in the event of it being approved for markets outside the People's Republic as the third Denza badged Fangchengbao product. For the moment, this is purely speculative and not confirmed by either Fangchengbao or Denza. As a reminder, the latter, a once joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, will make its South African market debut in 2026 with the B5, and, if recent reports are to be believed, with the B8 a short while later. Chery completes CSH roll-out with Tiggo 8 plug-in hybrid
Chery has officially completed the roll-out of its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) models in South Africa with the arrival of the Tiggo 8 CSH. Not the flagship The Citizen reports that joining the Tiggo 7 Pro Max and Tiggo 7 Pro, the Tiggo 8 CSH adopts the same plug-in hybrid configuration as the latter, but is restricted to a single, unbadged derivative which, surprisingly, isn't the local line-up's new flagship. Positioned between the two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, the Tiggo 8 CSH doesn't adopt the 'Pro' suffix and as such, will be marketed as the Tiggo 8 CSH as opposed to the Hybrid-e description used at its official preview launch in China two years ago. Changes inside and out Similar to the newly facelifted Tiggo 7, which takes leave of the 'Pro' and 'Pro Max' names, the Tiggo 8 CSH differs aesthetically from the combustion models by featuring a new grille with black surrounds, a restyled front bumper, standard Auto High Beam Assist LED headlights and new 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the differences continue in the shape of the same centre console as sister brand Jaecoo's J7, complete with a pair of wireless smartphone chargers, a rotary drive mode selector and two cupholders. With the gear lever moving to the steering column, Chery has also redesigned the Tiggo 8 CSH's dashboard by eschewing the dual 12.3-inch displays for a freestanding instrument cluster of the same size, plus a new 15.6-inch infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter's inclusion has seen the central air vents move to the centre console, while the previous toggle switches and physical buttons on the steering wheel make way for touch-sensitive switchgear. Space and tech As with the rest of the Tiggo 8 range, the CSH keeps the seven-seat layout, with boot space ranging from 117-litres to 494-litres. Dropping the middle row results in space maxing out at 1 930-litres. The result is a total system output of 255kW/525Nm, an electric-only range of 90km, and a combined overall distance of 1 200km. The claimed fuel consumption is 5.2L/100km. Sending the amount of twist to the front axle is a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). In addition, three driving modes are offered: Eco, Normal and Sport. Chery Tiggo 8 CSH Hybrid launches in Mzansi
Sold exclusively in range-topping Apex trim, the Tiggo 8 CSH features a 2+3+2 seating layout. Boot space measures 117 l with all seven seats in place, 494 l with the third row folded, and up to 1,930 l with the second and third rows folded flat. Standard features include black synthetic leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with electronic adjustment and massage function, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, interior ambient lighting and an electric tailgate. Further practical touches come in the form of roof rails, second row air vents, cupholders in the first and second rows, many USB ports (one in front, two in the second row, plus Type-C fast charging for the two rows) and a 12-volt outlet in the front. Technology highlights include a digital instrument cluster, head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, a 540° camera and a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter is linked to a 12-speaker Sony sound set-up and supports Chery's Intelligent Voice Command for hands-free control of key functions.
