I was a Man Utd academy star – I was told to cut my hair, fined for getting a tattoo and dropped after scoring a penalty
FORMER MANCHESTER UNITED star DJ Buffonge could have been another star graduate from the club's academy, like his pal Marcus Rashford.
However, the 26-year-old, now without a club, has lifted the lid on the realities of life when trying to forge a path into professional football, both the good and the bad.

In an interview with The Athletic, Buffonge spoke about joining the Red Devils at the age of 16, having previously played for Arsenal and Fulham - the latter of which is where he says he had the most enjoyment from his career.
After five years with Fulham, the midfielder was lured to Man Utd by then Under-18s coach Paul McGuinness, who invited him and his dad out to lunch and gave a glowing review of Buffonge's skillset and potential.
On trial ahead of the 2015/16 campaign, he also earned the seal of approval from Class of 92' legends Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, then assistant to manager Louis van Gaal and head of academy respectively.
Buffonge explains how the pair gave him some really "encouraging" advice as they broke down what they did and didn't like about his game.

His start to Man Utd academy life under McGuinness and later Kieran McKenna was generally happy, despite a torn abductor which he suffered while making a pass to Rashford.
However, after McKenna promoted Buffonge to the Under-23 side —following the now-Ipswich boss telling him under-18s football was "too easy" for him — more problems began to surface.
Despite then boss, Warren Joyce, having great success by winning the youth league title in six out of eight years he was the manager, Buffonge described the set-up as "like an army camp".
Buffonge explains that he didn't get much of a look-in for actual minutes behind the likes of Scott McTominay - then playing as a striker - because it was more focused on "if you can run up and down in training".

But prior to Joyce leaving to take over at Wigan, Buffonge revealed how the coach had told him he would not be making his debut under Jose Mourinho until the now 17-year-old cut his hair - a comment Joyce does not recall making but admits was in his coaching style.
He said: "Warren Joyce would make comments like, 'I'm gonna tell Mourinho you're not gonna make your debut with him until you cut your hair.' I was just thinking, 'I don't understand.
'Better than what we currently have' - Man Utd fans drooling over Wayne Rooney's son Kai's goal for academy team
"They're joking around, but I really want to play. I don't see the correlation between my hair and me playing.' In football, there's a lot of banter... but even if it was said as banter, it stuck with me because when you're fighting for your place, everything feels like a signal.
"I'm a young kid trying to get minutes, and I'm asking for guidance, and if you're guiding me to cut my hair, that doesn't really make sense... I did cut it a couple of months later — not fully off — but nothing changed from that point.'
Joyce does not recall making the comment, but admits his style of coaching means it was the sort of thing he might have said.
Later on, Buffonge was fined a week's wages for getting a tattoo on his chest that read: "I was put on this earth to achieve my greatest self, to live out my purpose and to do it courageously."
That was despite a rule at the time saying no youth player was allowed to get tattoos.
However, his eventual exit from the club was set in motion under Joyce's replacement, Ricky Sbragia in August 2018.
Buffonge explained how, in the third game of the season against Southampton, he had won a penalty and, in the heat of the moment, took it ahead of assigned taker Angel Gomes and later caught him a huge "b*********" for his trouble - despite Gomes being okay with it on the pitch.
The next game Buffonge was in the stands, which then became a more permanent feature for him after Sbragia made choices in collaboration with senior club staff to drop him.
Buffonge said: "That was the moment I started feeling some decisions weren't even about football anymore — it felt political. No one could tell me directly what the issue was."

Other than the sporadic five-minute cameos, Buffonge often saw his game limited.
Yet later on, when having lunch, he was chatted to by first-team boss Mourinho - who had known Buffonge from his days at Fulham with the Portuguese's own son playing for the Cottagers at the same time.
Buffonge said: "He came over and said, 'DJ, I want to know why you've not been playing recently. The last game you were doing good. Are you not fit? What's the problem?'. And I told him, 'I honestly don't know.'
'Mourinho said, 'OK, now you're going to come train with us, and I'm gonna tell you the reason why I think you don't play.' I ended up training with them most of the time.
"He couldn't give me a reason why I wasn't playing. He said, 'If I could say one thing – never walk (when on the pitch)'."
Buffonge recalls how in his first training session with the senior team at the age of 17 or 18 he put the ball through Phil Jones' legs, which sent everyone crazy despite some of the defender's "foul language".
The midfielder spoke about the rewards of training with top-class players such as Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, though he admits he remained starved of development time through minutes.
He remained training with the senior side when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Mourinho in December 2018, but Buffonge admits he knew there was no way back at the club before he went to Bolton on loan, where he suffered an unfortunate hamstring injury.
Buffonge left Man Utd - who have actively tried caring for player welfare stars in recent years - in 2019 at the age of 20, joining Italian second-tier side Spezia.
Spells with three Dutch teams would follow, but ultimately, after two surgeries in as many years, he decided to call it a day on professional football.
He is now focused on creating a platform to 'coach young men on mindset, masculinity, purpose and motivation,' using the lessons he learned at Man Utd and beyond.

Ruben Amorim handed double transfer blow as top target rejects Man Utd move
Ruben Amorim is desperate to land some top quality signings to overhaul his struggling Manchester United squad and he has already taken the first step by landing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha Manchester United have a lot of work to do to return to the Premier League 's summit after their difficult first season under Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach could not arrest the team's alarming slide down the table as they ended up finishing 15th and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham - but now he is aiming to bounce back by securing a raft of top signings. United have already brought in forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62m and are hoping to snap up Brentford frontman Bryan Mbeumo too - despite being rivalled by Spurs. Amorim will also be hoping to shift a number of unwanted stars that will give him more room to manoeuvre in the transfer market amid the club's perilous financial situation. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look through the biggest Manchester United transfer news and gossip. Gyokeres rejects United Without doubt the biggest news in the last 24 hours is a report from Portuguese outlet Record, which claims Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has turned down the chance to move to Old Trafford. The Swedish forward has been one of United's top targets since Amorim became the club's new head coach - after previously working with Gyokeres at Lisbon. United have watched the player underline his ability and reputation as one of the world's best strikers after netting 53 goals in all competitions But after the Red Devils missed out on Champions League football, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the club to attract Gyokeres, especially with rivals Arsenal also in the mix for his signature. The report claims Gyokeres' agent has informed United he does not want to join them, with Arsenal now securing the upper hand. It has been previously reported that Sporting have rejected a £55m bid for Gyokeres, which is said to have triggered anger from the striker, who said: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." Leverkusen pull out of Garnacho race Another blow for Amorim. The United head coach is eager to shift some of his deadwood - particularly Alejandro Garnacho after falling out with the player. But Sky in Germany are reporting that Bayer Leverkusen are now "unlikely" to make a bid for the Argentine due to the mounting "package of transfer fee and wages" being too high for the German club. United are said to have slapped a £70m price tag on the player despite his difficult season for United. He scored ten goals and assisted nine but only stated 23 games in the Premier League out of a possible 38 and was dropped by Amorim for a number of games. Leverkusen are looking to build after agreeing to let Florian Wirtz join Liverpool for around £116.5m but are unwilling to break the bank for Garnacho. A move to Leverkusen would see the winger reunite with former United boss Erik ten Hag, who has just taken over the Bundesliga side. Garnacho's future at United looks bleak after he was dropped by Amorim for the Europa League final, with the player speaking after the game to question the manager's decision and admitting the team's season was "s***". United set to welcome Leon One silver lining for United amid a string of set-backs. Some supporters might have forgotten they actually agreed a move for a young talent called Diego Leon from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno for around £7m. Left-back Leon has previously earned comparisons to Wayne Rooney given his similar impact at a young age and buzzcut hairstyle. United paid an initial £3.3m with add-ons for the 18-year-old's services but allowed him to stay with the club until the summer. The club will now welcome Leon to their camp at the start of July and his arrival should provide a boost to Amorim as a hungry, young player who wants to add competition and push for a place. Last season he played 28 times for Porteno, scoring three goals, and will now link up with a number of young players United are attempting to develop, including Ayden Heaven, Chido-Obi and Sekou Kone. Man Utd made Osimhen decision hours before Gyokeres gave final answer
Manchester United have eyed up both Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres this summer with the Sporting Lisbon star now rejecting the chance to move to Old Trafford Manchester United opened discussions with Victor Osimhen over a summer move to Old Trafford - only to find out shortly after that Viktor Gyokeres has rejected the opportunity to reunite with Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils are in the market for more firepower this summer and have several frontmen on their shortlist. Osimhen and Gyokeres have both been under consideration such has been their prolific nature in recent years. Footmercato claimed the Premier League side have opened discussions with Osimhen, but were still expected to pursue the signing of Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon. Reports in Portugal now claim the Swede has turned down the chance to move to Manchester with his agents informing United chiefs of their decision. Gyokeres is ready to pursue a new challenge and has threatened strike action to force through a move away. He said on Instagram: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." Last term the Swede, who has played in England with the likes of Coventry and Swansea, broke the 50 goal barrier in Portugal. Across his two seasons he's come up with almost 100 goals. Osimhen meanwhile has just spent the year on loan in Turkey, helping Galatasaray claim the league title. He scored 37 times to further put himself in the shop window. Neither he nor Gyokeres will be sold on the cheap as Arsenal also eye the Sporting star. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has said: "One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. I can guarantee that Viktor Gyökeres will not leave for €60m+10m (£51m+£8.5m) because I never promised him that. This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyökeres, neither today nor last season." Former United star Rio Ferdinand has said this week that the club should've prioritised a move for Osimhen ahead of Gyokeres with the Nigerian no longer wanted by Napoli despite his impressive strike rate in the final third. He said: "I think Gyokeres, everyone's talking about him. Again, I think if I'm looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I'd probably pick Osimhen because of that experience." "And he's shown he's done it in multiple leagues now. And he's done it internationally as well. I think he's a top-class number nine who, again, the young players will be able to learn from. I'm not saying that Gyokeres would fail. I'm just saying that if I had a preference, I would go there."

Man United contact new striker target after Viktor Gyokeres picks rival Premier League club as his No 1 preference - but major stumbling block threatens to scupper move
Manchester United have posted interest in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike after being made aware Viktor Gyokeres would prefer to join Arsenal. Ekitike is valued at £80million and Chelsea and Liverpool are also among the 22-year-old's admirers, although his price tag is prohibitive. He scored 22 goals in 45 games for Frankfurt last season and was previously on the books at Paris Saint-Germain, who sold him for close to £14m in 2024. The France U-21 international finished the campaign as Frankfurt's top scorer in the Bundesliga, tied with Omar Marmoush, who left for Manchester City in January. United head coach Ruben Amorim had targeted a reunion with Gyokeres after his side finished a lowly 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final. But the Red Devils' hopes of signing the in-demand Swede look to have faded and as a result, they could turn their attention to Ekitike, despite his hefty valuation. In a potential boost for United, Ekitike was asked which club was his 'favourite' as a child and he quickly responded: 'Manchester United'. Arsenal are understood to be maintaining dialogue with Sporting over Gyokeres although RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko remains their No 1 target. Should they fail to strike a deal with Leipzig, they could revert to Gyokeres, who scored an incredible 54 goals in 52 appearances for his club last season. The 27-year-old also has interest from Juventus and clubs in Saudi Arabia. United, who have no European football to offer their targets this summer, are continuing to work on a deal to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. A first bid of £55million for the 25-year-old was rejected earlier this week. Reports have indicated that Tottenham, who have officially unveiled Thomas Frank as their new head coach, would look to hijack the move. United also admire Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, who is on Spurs' radar, too.
