FIFA World Cup draw in Vegas on December 5: reports
ESPN and TUDN'Mexico said Vegas had been picked for the draw of the expanded 48-team event, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In all, 12 groups of four nations will be drawn.
When the United States played host to the 1994 World Cup, the draw ceremony was also conducted in Las Vegas.
ESPN's original report said that The Sphere, a 17,500-seat venue which opened in 2023, was seen as the front-runner for the draw site.
But Sphere sources confirmed to AFP the World Cup draw would not take place there, and ESPN later reported Sphere sources told the sports network it would not be held there.
In 1994, the draw was staged in Las Vegas even though it was not a host city for any matches, a situation that is also the case for next year's event.

Grant hosts Folsom in August high school football clash on ESPN
Friday night lights will shine even brighter in the Sacramento area this year as local powerhouses Folsom High School and Grant Union High School will face off as part of a six-game slate for the 2025 ESPN High School Football Kickoff. The Grant Pacers host the nationally ranked No. 20 Folsom Bulldogs in a marquee late-night matchup on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 7:30 p.m. PT, airing live on ESPN. Grant is the defending CIF Division 2-A State Champion and has won that title in two of the last three seasons. Protecting him up front is USC commit Vlad Dyakonov, the No. 214 senior in the country. The rest of the ESPN High School Football Kickoff slate includes the No. 1-ranked Mater Dei, No. 4 IMG Academy out of Florida, No. 5 St. Frances Academy out of Maryland, and Georgia powerhouses No. 11 Milton and No. 12 Buford Mater Dei, located in Santa Ana in Southern California, won the CIF Open Division Championship last season for the program's fifth title in seven seasons.

Practice Ejections: HC punishes Cowboys for fighting; 'We need discipline' after hands fly
Brian Schottenheimer is bringing a youthful energy and new mindset to his first training camp as Cowboys head coach, but he went decidedly old-school on Wednesday when things during practice got excessively chippy. Video clips out of Oxnard have shown plenty of enthusiasm from Cowboys coaches and players- with music and dancing, guys celebrating good plays, and a level of physicality that's been noticeable. It's manifested itself into several scuffles between teammates, which is, of course, a common occurrence at camp for most teams. Young players are literally fighting for roster spots and the attention of coaches, and there's often a disparity in how one player might attack a given practice rep as opposed to the man across from him. But things went a little too far a little too frequently on Wednesday. Rookie offensive lineman Ajani Cornelius, the team's sixth-round pick out of Oregon, got himself ejected from practice for throwing a punch, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. And after a third skirmish broke out during the day's work session, a livid Schottenheimer yelled for the entire team to assemble at midfield. "You want to fight?" he reportedly screamed. "Let's [expletive] fight. Get your ass on the sideline!" From there, he ordered his players to burn off their extra energy by running sideline-to-sideline, back and forth for several minutes, with several coaches also taking on the punishment before the day's practice was cut short. They weren't exactly wind sprints. And overall, it was no Landry Mile, the infamous conditioning drill imposed in the early days by the Cowboys' first head coach, but it likely got Schottenheimer's message across to tone down the extracurricular activity. At least one star veteran praised the coach's back-to-basics approach. "I like what he's doing. We need discipline," wide receiver CeeDee Lamb explained afterward. "Shout out to him for that." Hosting World Cup 2026 in Massachusetts is a good idea, 56% say in poll
A new poll from Axios Boston finds that a majority of their readers think hosting the World Cup in Massachusetts next year is a good idea. Next summer, tens of thousands of soccer fans will come to Massachusetts for the World Cup. Seven matches will take place at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro and a party will be held in Boston. Axios' poll found 56% of readers like the idea of Massachusetts hosting the World Cup, while 43% are not on board. "Supporters said it could be a great opportunity for Boston to shine, to show Boston as a world class city," said Mike Deehan of Axios Boston. "The negative side of it was kind of what you would expect. Traffic, too many people, too many tourists. A lot of people skeptical that the MBTA would be able to get people from some of these fan expositions events in Boston proper down to Foxboro." The MBTA is working on the transportation concerns and plans to start construction soon on a new train station in Foxboro to help handle the anticipated capacity. The World Cup kicks off in Mexico City on June 11, 2026 and Gillette will host games between June 13 and July 9. In total, there will be 48 teams competing in 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States. The final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 19. Fans are asked to register for tickets and create an ID on FIFA's website.
